View Full Version : Save your friend from a bloody death?

Ever since Cliffy B said that you're not invincible during a chainsaw, i've had the idea that maybe this time around you can actually save your teammates before they fall to a high RPM-death. I'm so confused!!! And even if you do save them wouldn't they still have a huge V cut in their torso? I have no clue... What do you think

i think cliffy b said once someone starts being chainsawed then he is dead you cant save him but you can kill the person chainsawing your teammate

Once the chainsaw comes in contact, you are instantly dead. I'm not sure if you can be saved in between the time of the beginning of the animation and the actual collision.

Well with the curbstomp there was the one second moment of life where if someone chainsawed the curbstomper you could be saved maybe if someone shoots the guy before it makes contact with an instant kill weapon your saved?

Well as far as i know Cliff said that once the animation has started the player is dead.

The animations and such always confused me. Once early in Gears of War I shot someone square in the face on Fuel Depot as his foot was raised in the air over my teammates head. I got the headshot and Carmines body fell on top of my teammates body so when I revived him it went flying through the air. Which is why I remember it so clearly...
I for one have actually been saved from a chainsaw in Gears 1, but the window is so narrow that it will almost never happen in a regular match.
My friend and I were hosting a player match and just messing around in the spawn (Annex game) when all of a sudden an enemy spawned between me and my friend. We all revved our chainsaws and ran at each other, the enemy just started to chainsaw me when literally an instant later my friend got him and sawed him in two. I was put in the down-but-not-out state and my friend revived me.
So basically, unless you gets a lucky headshot the instant someone starts chainsawing your buddy (or you happen to be standing right next to them with your chainsaw ready), it's not gonna happen.

Gears 2 is sort of different because during an animation the players are not invincible so you would have a larger window to save your teammate.

I don't have an answer to this i assume you can be saved as i had done it many times in gears 1 with curbstompping and chainsawing!

Cliff said that once the animation starts, the player = dead. You can still down and wound the person as they are chainsawing, curbstomping, ect.

im pretty sure he said once the chainsaw touches the person they are dead, but if the chainsawer is killed before the chainsaw touches the guy hes trying to chainsaw he will be saved. Sorry i dont know what video he said that in.

Maybe they'd be downed?

Not really.
The difference in Gears 2 is that if you get chainsawed, the guy chainsawing you can be blown away by a shotgun mid-animation instead of your would-be savior having to wait for him to finish. The window in which to save someone remains the same, and here's why: Once someone's chainsaw touches you (this happens less than half a second into the animation), you're dead. Regardless of what happens to the guy filleting you, you will end up in pieces on the ground.
The only change from Gears 1 in this case is that after that half-second, the chainsawer can be killed by someone else before he can move away.

but I never knew that there was a window to save your friend in gears 1, I thought that once the animation starts, your done...

If you watch the videos the chainsaw isn't the same anymore. GOW 1 the enemy looks like he's being sawn in half before it even touches him (It's kinda floating in the air)
In GOW 2 the animation puts the chainsaw right on their shoulder.
I bet by the time it makes contact with the shoulder they die. But the curb stomp is kinda tricky.
I can't see how someone would die from being flipped over and NOT stepped on, but then again I can see how technically the animation has started and they should be dead.
Tricky tricky stuff here...oh well..I trust Epic to do it the best they possibly can in 60 days.

What if a guy uses your buddy as a meatshield, but you're behind him with a shotgun/chainsaw/sniper@head... Will you kill the guy and save your buddy as a result (because you are behind him?)
Edit: I remember saying that with a meatshield, you basically have a 'get out of jail free card' versus boomshots and chainsaws, but I am assuming that's if you do it from the front. My question applies to the rear.

I was under the impression you can, which makes dueling very dangerous (but still better than GoW1 where you had to watch your buddy get sawed helplessly).

Yeah you can help your buddies if they're in a chainsaw duel.
You can shoot at them and they'll be unlikely to win the b-mashing sequence.

Dont worry people, Cliffy B announced that there will be no more temporary invinciblity during an execution or chainsaw. You can practically do anything to the oppenent and save your fellow comrades.

There are youtube videos where people have interupted chainsaw duels with more chainsaw duels.
At 2:56 and 3:03 in the video below you can see two examples of what I'm talking about.
The first one is rather short but the second is long enough to get a good look at.

NEW QUESTION!!
Will you be able to spawn if someone is using you as a meatshield?

As soon as you are taken as a meatshield you die. So, yes, you can respawn.

Just saying it'd be weird to respawn in like Annex or something and see someone still holding your body as a shield.

but if you use the boomshot, chances are your going to blow both him and your teammate up.

once one of the cinimatic actions like chainsaw and exicutions you are automaticaly dead no matter if the animation compleats

Thats pretty blunt and ruins all hopes for any chances of survival and intricate attention to detail in the gameplay.
So your probably right...

I Agree this seems the most logical idea unless in gears 2 you can like stop them or something ? ? ?

That's correct for the chainsaw, but it isn't correct for the executions. Based off of Gears 1, once an execution starts you can be saved as long as you haven't been killed.

They might have changed that up for Gears 2.
