Have you tried paulpsomiadis thread http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=596618 there's a section about half way down that covers this.

I think I'd be trying again from scratch - pick your way through the registry and delete/rename likely suspects. Also rename your Gears folders, both the install and the corresponding profile folder.
There is a utility provided by Microsoft for removing dodgy installs too - go search the technet for it. I think it might be mentioned in paulpsomiadis' thread as well.

Ive tried both of those things. XD neither of the worked. the registry editing, took ages but i got through it.. that didnt work, and neither did the cleaner..
I dont know if this is related or not. but when i try to open the Gears of War.msi file it says:

Hello,
New member and first post so dont be harsh. lol I dont know if I'm even posting this in the right thread. I recently purchased G.o.W from windows marketplace and it was a downloaded purchase. After a very long DL and install process it gave me two errors. [some file could not be copied] and my only option was to select ok. It also offered the option to launch the game once it finished the install which I selected of corse. Needless to say it never started. I tried to manualy start it with the ICON under start menu/games :( then I tried to dbl click the [startup.exe] in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries. Nothin happened. So at this point I simply uninstalled and restarted the DL and install process. Great no errors this time or so I thought. The game tried to start but then a window pops up saying [please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK, and restart the application] um.... This is a downloaded purchase "I DONT HAVE A DISC GRRR" I contacted M$=microsoft and the agent errmm tech guy told me they didn't offer the game for DL purchase and that he could not provide any assistance or support for this issue. At this point I'm sorry to admitt he is lucky I could not touch him. He eventualy acknowledge after walking him threw the entire purchase process I had a valid complaint. Because I made the purchase on a M$ website! Now he starts to be more helpfull and lets me speak with his manager. The manager told me he had heard of this but never actually had the issue come up before, and the only way he could resolve this issue was to send me a hard copy? Which in turn means hurry up and wait. If any one has any ideas how to fix this issue please reply to this post or Email me. Guess i'll uninstall and reinstall it again and see if that works. Sorry for the rant but I'm sure you'll understand.
The only reason I purchased a DL version was that no retailer in my area had a copy on the shelf. I supose I could have had one of them order it for me or purchased it online and received it 2 or 3 days later, but I wanted it now, after playin it at my relatives for a few hours. "GRIN"
