I got a question for all of you pepz. I was wondering how to download maps and custom mods. I use to play the original Unreal Tournament, the first one for the pc, and it would download maps and weapons automatically everytime you joined a server... Is that how this game works, or do I have to download everything separately from sites like fileplanet? Also, does the file download from other people playing the game, like the old UT did or is it just from the server if it auto updates?

Thanks, I'm loving this game! :)

You can do it either way. if the server is good, it doesn't matter much. if it the server has no redirection (fast downloading) then you are probably better off downloading it from a site like this.

If you have downloaded something from a server ingame you can't use that offline either.

Also, you can not see if a server has redirection or not, so you just have to try and see how fast it goes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I dont plan on playing this game offline, I'm hoping to find some good servers to play on that have it setup to auto download the content... Hope some of those will not redirect me to a download site... :P

Thanks again for the help! :D

PS - On the original UT, it downloaded the files from people that were playing the game also... Does UT3 do that, or is it just from the server?

I dont think the original UT did that, since it would cause huge lag with the players you'd download it from.

u1 did that and yes, ut99 did do that.
in ut99 they added redirection for downloads though, so if you had a ftp/html you could download them from - it redirected you to that link.
in u1 there was a custom mod that did the same.

edit: misunderstood how he wrote that - no it wasnt peer2peer - it was server to client only

you never downloaded from another player i dont think. you did download from the server you were playing on and thats still the same...

overall if you know yore going to use a mod or model i think it usually pays to dl it first, but if the server has a decent redirect, like posted above, you will be fine!

seeya online ;)

Well - sorry to inform you that there are usually less than 180People online playing the game on the PC-Version servers ...

One hint - the ping-time to the servers is crucial for a good gameplay and especially your reactions. so always make several refreshes on the game-server list of your choice - and take the server that is statistically nearest to you ...

anyway even if you download a mod or model etc from a server you can still be able to use it offline or to host a match, just use the UT3Tweaker, you find it on Troubleshooting and Technology
and sometimes you wont have that much choice with the servers....take as example clb, few servers do it and no1 is full -_-

is not that, every time you go you always find full servers and mid full servers
the problem is that there isnt much choice
come play, the game will be full someday (i hope)
Anyway i cant explain myself how there are so less ppl that plays and there is a rank with over 200k ppl in it O_O

So it says 200k people play it, but you cant ever find a server to play in?:eek:

I've actually been seeing a bunch of new players online lately, it seems the community is growing, albeit slowly. I rarely have a problem finding a server to play in, anyhow. There are at least a few low-pinging pubs with players at any given time.

Stick around, rlmccoy, it should only get better now that MSU content entries have begun to roll out.

theres always people playing... not as many as the game should have, but theres enough to find a good game at all hours. very few mp fps have the number of servers they used to.
