Hi everyone, I've made allot of changes to my map since last release because I just love working on it and making it better, I wasn't going to release it, but I've changed quite a bit to make it better. the changes are quite small though and prob only interest those who want better visuals with it.

some of the changes include

I've done quite a bit and am so happy with it now. So there you go guys. Hopefully this gets updated on the servers too.



Added meshes to the shield belt room ceiling.
Changed meshes used on the belt room windows
Changed the Post processing volume to increase contrast from bright and dark areas
Increased brightness of some lights
Reduced the blue effect of the fog.
Increased brightness of alarm lights
changed position of the flak cannon
Removed the window from the flag room to the main hall stairs
Added timer to the alarm so it will not continuously sound
Added Udamage
Added meshes and changed textures around the centre health
changed stair case by flak cannon
Re-meshed area under team logo at the main entrance
Removed bright lights that did not have light source
Added a few meshes here and there
Added texture path by rocket and stinger
Changed textures/meshes used rarely to a frequently used texture/mesh
Fixed being able to fire though one of the entrance windows
Updated UI images
Fixed some red lights in blue base to blue
Re arranged the meshes used by the team coloured grilled doors by the flak cannon.
Added cull distance volume to make performance even better
Added mesh to left curved entrance floor
Added A mega structure to the background to act as the supports that hold the map high in the air
Changes the fog so that it does not black out the view when viewing the horizon
Added cull distance to allot of the buildings
A Level for UT3

The content of this level was taken all from the retail version of UT3, I did modify some materials, but a big thanks to EPIC for putting their content into well sort out groups, I would not have been able to do this if it was not for this level of organization.

Thanks to "Larathiel eMail" who created this map for UT1, this map was great, and was simple enough to be the very first map I have made.

Installation
-----------------------------------------------------

Unzip CTF-SafeGuard.zip

Move all files into C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Published\CookedPC\CustomMaps

If the directory does not exist, create it manually.

Type "open CTF- SafeGuard" in the console, or select the level in a multiplayer/instant action game.

If you find you are seeing low detail meshes when you play. This is not a problem with my map rather a problem with your game setup. I have managed to fix this for myself.
What I suggest you do, is uninstall, reinstall, patch, and then create the custom maps folder. Next time you play the map, all should look good!

nice, looks like u removed some lights from the windows and let the sky shine through, and other irrelvant lights thats a big + from me well done, the map looks much better and logical now hehe really looks like a stock map.

do you realise that, those textures could not posibly be aligned any better? the one by the stinger is aligned to the grid on the rest of the ground floor and aligned so that the texture detail is below the weapon pick up! I got this idea as it was used the same way in coret and in omicron dawn. what are you on about??? thats not a well thought out comment.

As for the second one, thats aligned to floor, but it looks that way simply because of the way the U engine renders the UV maps, it makes it seem elevated

Ahh please remove your post, because that was just wrong and people will get the wrong Idea, what your sugesting by the stinger would require a total change in the texure used...

pure awesomeness bazzwano! from a mappers point of view, i seriously don't think this could be improved at all. The gameplay rules, it looks bloody beautiful, bots don't seem to have any issues, weapons / armour / powerups are well balanced, and to top it all off the framerates are descent too :).

this is Make-Something-Unreal-winning quality stuff mate. be sure to enter it!

Your map is my preferred CTF map including retail one. The 1.2 version was <a-must-have> and this one is surely <a must-must-have>. I will love it without a doubt since it is a enhanced version of my favorite CTF map.

UH the PC download is corrupted or something, whenever I attempt to download it it just sits there for a hile and doesn't do anything.
Maybe you could upload that to Filefront as well? That would be great thanks. Because this level looks supurb.

um no, i work in a call centre fro a bank lol, its also my first map, but iv been editing other usermaps and epic made maps since ut1, but thats my first ever full map, i am actully working on another map, it looks even better, and will be even better optimized. Its also a remake, CTF-Dreary3 from Dreary in Ut1, im going to make a making of this map thread soon, look out for it.

A bit hard on yourself there bret, I dont wana sound up myself or anything, but I know my maps (safeguard is all you have seen so far though) are quite detailed, but it takes allot of time getting them this way, at least I think so, iv been working on dreary for 2 months now when im not at work, I work 11 hours a day and when im home i map. I spend allot of time thinking about how im going to mesh my levels, I do concept art to help with my ideas, and one of the larger rooms I was working on went through 3 major structual changes, not on paper but in the editor, this was a big waste of time, but thats how I work, if I dont like it then I change it (hehe i do this to community maps with ut2004 :) ).
I just love adding in detail to make the maps look great and I know im good at this, i guess the simple secret to that is to put smaller meshes over bigger meshes, and not just settle with on, Seperate surfaces into sections and dont just find a wall mesh and slap that over the wall and consider it done, somthing I guess i do is Trim the top and bottem of walls and mesh arround that. and them apply more detail meshes over top of that. How you light these meshes is also very important.

I dont have a secret or anything like that, there isnt anything I can teach you, I just have a good attention to detail and am genrally quite creative.
I think you are doing a good job, and your maps look beter then allot of what iv seen so far. no affence to any of the mappers but I think allot of people are having truble adjusting to the level that epic have set.

so dont give up. thats nto really positive, but your doing quite will and are on the right track.

It's a shame that most of mappers I see only wants to make, make and make maps, sacrificing attention to details, style and various optimizations in several if not all departments just to get there virtual self known. UT3 maps with nothing in particular I just mention is "just another map...", no more. The engine can render so much details that the lack of attentions is even more obvious than before.

With time, I collect 700 custom maps in all UT included. These are the greatest maps of all time for every UT. They are what CTF-Safeguard is in UT3 in regard on quality map.

The newbies think that they just have to put this and that in place & voilà ! It's done in 2 betas in 2 weeks. Come on... and they want to get attention out of that crap. They don't seem to understand that mapping is an art and not just good graphics kept together. I just hope that UT3 mappers can take example out of you because you deserve it with this not just great but AWESOME map.

Your 2 months and more of hard work will please me because CTF-Safeguard is my most preferred map, all retails and custom maps included ;) Since you put so much time and efforts in your maps, the next one it's going to be an WONDERFUL map :D

If you need beta testers, don't hesitate to ask.

you made some really valid points, I feel allot of maps are "rushed" for UT3, I do work full time and I assume other mappers will be too, id really expect a few months on a map, not a few weeks as I have hurd from other mappers, that does seem like a case of getting their name out there rather then a good map out there. I love the maps I make, and I would not reliease a map that I wouldnt play myself, and that means nothing less then epic quality.

Back in the days of UT1 / 2004 I down loaded som many maps, there were some really well made maps and so many of them. allot of the maps that I would like to remake are custom maps from Ut1 they are the greatist in my mind, I gues thats what im doing :s how many I do depends on how much time I have, I may do another after dreary, who knows. I wish other people would help me out there, and do a decent job, I carnt do them all.

I saw someone do a remake of CTF-terra, it was a rushed job, and someone else is going to have to do it again (I would hope so, and do a good job), great map, sad that they didnt put in the effort.

On a final note, I make my maps room by room and make each, to final quality, i test them heaps, and never seem to need a tester, I think I do a good job, never had an issue with safegrd anyway.

Well, this next map (Dreary) judging by the screenees look absolutely splendid :)

You use the stock textures very well. You have the < tech-sci-fi > theme in your blood :D

This level is looking VERY promising, like Safeguard.

Just like that, it remind me of "Alien 3" movie.

For anyone that does not realise - it is my map remeshed ¬_¬

It uses the same BSP layout - maybe editted a little and the same kismet, same theme, same background etc. Not trying to discredit you so much as there is a lot of your own work in here but I want people to realise the situation.

"Same Theme"? it is not, ive used different meshes then you, meches epic made might i add, and iv tried to make myn like the hydro, deck theme, dreay has always been industrial theme, that's what it is. this is not "your" theme. maybe im copying epic.

Actually the original Dreary was not industrial themed, it was a military outpost of a different planet which happened to have the worst weather in the galaxy. When I was talking to you about it I said I was making mine industrial themed due to the goo that was in the original and I thought rain in a factory environment would look good.

Also I never stated it was "MY" theme, only that you have used the same theme when there are so many others that it could be applied to. You said yourself to me that you had never done this theme and if you were to be able to make good changes to "my map" you would need to learn it. That doesn't seem to suggest someone that had been planning this far in advanced prior to my release.

If you have made loads of changes and the work you showed me is no longer in there then fair enough - it is all your own work. But looking at pictures you have posted here and ones you sent me of edits you made to my map, they look very similar.

I wasn't so much as demanding credit as requesting that I could have been acknowledged in the background. You hadn't started work on this map until you had seen mine, commented on it, decided you wanted to work together on it, then upon me agreeing you went solo and did you own. For me I find this a little harsh and that since that point you would happily go along not even mentioning me, considering the events that led up to you actually making the map.

And its not just on this forum its wherever I have seen you post about this, saying it as though it was an original idea, especially after the parting comment in your PM:


I do not consider my version entirely my own, dispite redoing the BSP, it is still your layout and that will not change.

If i release this I will credit you appropriatly, I am fair and will do this.

I don't want to argue over this because to be honest I can't see anything that can be achieved by it. I don't really want you to stop because I can see that it is coming along well. As I said in my PM my concern is, and you said in your previous PMs that you didn't want to, create competition between the two maps.


Anyway to actually make these posts relevant to the topic at hand: I think that safeguard is a good map and I enjoy playing it. I haven't played the updated version yet but I can see that you have used that curved mesh for the floor that you asked about in my map ;)

I must admit we are both a bit peeved, we gota miss understanding and gota sort this out. so here it goes.
That PM is two months old, just after I was helping you with dreary, I only had a flag room and a stair case at that stage, the flag room did have alot of your work then... but when I say then Im saying back when we were doing it together, that was months ago.



Yes, my map was inspired by urs, more imsparation to do dreary remake myself as I entended after safeguard, but i didnt at that stage. Your map dis spark the trigger or insperation (which I was and intend to mention when I even have a credits list, thats why Im upset that you jump in before I even get to that stage.
Yes in the beginning we did start by just changing your map, as we were doing it together (this only includes the flag room changes I showed you) that's all we did. that combined yours and mine (or epic as they actually did the fan thing)
But regardless of that bullet above, Since then and since we went our separate ways I have been doing it all alone, with no reference to your BSP, or anything else.
Yes I still have the stair way that I did use your BSP as a reference for in turms of size, and location. Why did I do this, Not for me but for you because at the time I was giving those changes for you to include in your map, not my own.
Yes I do feel very bad that we are working on the same map Dreary, and I apologize for that, the way I see it i thought the community would enjoy two diff looking maps, but maybe not, i dont know.
Yes I did intend on referencing your lightning that you did. but again, im no where near release and at this stage im not crediting anyone, there it no credits list for a map that isnt even beta.
No, I dont know what your saying about me talking about this as though its original mine, its a remake. Im looking at the original map rather then your own. I also look to epics maps allot for ideas. I have also done allot of concept art for this. that post with the images, is all I have mentioned in regards to this map.

I also do not want to argue regarding this, you said you wanted proof, so here it is, iv taken screens of my maps BSP and yours, I dont need to mention the meshes as that's obviously done by me.
here is a screen of the BSP of the sniper room, also seen in the above images posted, I have used subtractive bushes subtracted from a large additive cube, you can see mine is a learger room and a different shape.

Now heres yours, many additive brushes. your room is smaller then mine,and a different shape.

And here is the shock room, I actually have the shock rifle here for one, also again I have used subtractive brushes rather then many additive brushes. The meshes again, nothing like what you have in your scene, but yes, Industrial. LOL i just noticed we both have a drum in both our pics there, this is funy, maybe this is what you saw but its actually a huge coincidence as they were on there side originally, mine is also rotated as seen to futher prove it was not a copy paste, thats a coincidence.

And finaly, here is the stair well, remember this, this is basicly what I sent you, back when we tried to do it together. Yes I did reference the size and location of your bsp when i did it, why so that you could copy and paste into your map. but still, all done by me, the bsp is subtracted, and it actually has meshes.

in that Pm, yes i said i would credit you, I probable was over doing it, as yes i did reference your bsp in that instance, but i still made the bsp, just how anyone would in a remake, as we are for the original dreary, Ill say that again, since we went our own ways iv been using the original as the layout reference. I did reference your BSP for that stair well but you had no part in making it, that makes me that author.

Finaly, I said I would credit you where appropriate, that was two months ago, since then I have decided to do my own background, and pretty much everything else. the lightning tho, I may keep (if i still can, otherwise i can do that myself too) so you will get credit for that, and anything thing else i think is appropriate (inspiration maybe?) when I actually have a credits list.

While playing through this I was vaguely aware that it's probably wrong to be enjoying myself so thoroughly with this much claret flying around the screen, but was having too much fun to care ;)

Visually stunning - rarely seen anything of this quality. No freezing or frame-rate drops on my PS3. Had to switch off the bots eventually to have a good look round - kept getting a royal arse-kicking while checking out the eye-candy ;) In terms of atmospherics the only way I can see it being any better would be to have some more glass around so that you can take in that breath-taking cityscape & skybox, but then it'd probably be too distracting! Liked the inclusion of the open-air platform to the side, great for taking in the sights - apart from the first time; running from pursuit, went off the edge like a complete muppet ;)

Layout works well - nice runs to the flag; confined enough to be complete mayhem down the main corridors but with enough ways round that you can slip past it all if you're lucky while everyone else is busy :) Fast, frantic & above all fun!

Thanks for allowing this to be cooked for PS3 :) Very much looking forward to CTF-Dreary!

Thanks, your comment was well recieved. compaired to what im working on now, safeguard is not that flash in my eyes now, safeguard was my first map, well optimized yes, but i have learned even more since then, thankts to the UDN network, this has so much info, check it out mappers.

I personally do not like my sky zone, if you wish to call it that, theres not much going in it at all, i guess thats why I added the massive sructure, this helped, but otherwize its nothing flash. I intent to do the same with dreary, not the same theme, but I dont like over meshing somthing people are not going to see much, helps the performance

for those interested in dreary im about to put together a making of dreary thread showing the progress i have been making. Sphix (you will get your mention there)
I will be showing off everything I have done so far on dreary.

Ill be posting it up tonight. look out for it.

Hi. I don't know why u waste ur time. Ur 1st CTF-Safeguard release is perfect, awesome, everything as it should be. My fovorite 1.

CTF-Safeguard Version 2 is poor when i compare. I don't like this map at all. This changes u have made is misunderstanding. I don't know why u waste ur time. From hero to 0.

Well, talk about positive and constructive comments...

This map is at the same level quality of Epic stock map and speaking for myself I don't find it any issues at all in every aspect (flow, gameplay, weapons placements, powerup, lightning, name it).

Your the only one who's complaining so far. Why don't you explain what you think is wrong or can be modified to make this level better instead of criticizing in a negative way and bashing this marvelous map !

on a serious note, I carnt help but feel you are not serious, even though I can tell you strangly are, still makes no scence to me as there were no gameplay changes.

Hmm if you are having a problem with the download head over to MAPRAIDER i have uploaded there as well. Or do a search for CTF-Safeguard, my map has been mirrored all over the place.

Looks great, in fact I think I'd prefer it over the atmosphere of the original. By the looks of the screens it has a more gloomy feel.

Any chance of releasing it as a special "red" version?

yes the orange (mars) atmosphere suites it much more then the original.. I love it.. Im thinking about releasing it as safeguard 3 actually 3 in the name so it wont overwrite the origanal.. Just wanted to get any idea if many people would be interested for it to be worth my effort.

That map is so good that having safeguard 3, safeguard 4, safeguard 5 etc doesn't mind me at all since it's a must from the start, every variant version will be a keeper for me. Just make sure that the previous version is not touched.

Sorry for the necro-post, but this is a short review of the map (in version 2), I will make some more reviews of UT2004/UT3 maps from the oldest to the newest. Anyway, this UT3 map has a great consumption of the original UT99. Good gameplay, atmosphere and visuals. I love the edgy glasses which is one of the best, the ambient sounds are like wavelengths or something different; and also the buildings, formidable structures and skybox are spectacular from far away, familiar to Gotham City or something like New York City. :p Hardened the most likely an early innovation for making maps are the best things to try your luck and will love the most, like this one. :)
