View Full Version : Possible cause for vanishing checkpoints?

I've had this happen several times, so I'm sure of it: if the game isn't shut down properly (e.g. crash), when you next start it up, you can't resume a campaign as it states that no games are saved on the current device (and you can't start on Insane level). However, if you then shut down and restart the game (so it's now been shut down properly once), your checkpoints have mysteriously reappeared! Unless you don't realise this and start a new game, in which case they're gone forever :o

Can anyone else confirm this? Obviously I wouldn't ask anyone to test it unless they don't mind potentially losing everything ;)

Youre right, i have posted this before but it hasnt seem to work for most of the people. So I dont know, it happened to me too, but i recovered it and i just finished the game today

Something more: last night the game was crashing at the checkpoint just after killing the Corpser (in Act 3), and when I recovered my save games as above, I was back at the checkpoint before the Corpser fight. Eventually I got through the checkpoint after the fight by walking backwards through the checkpoint zone, but then I stopped for the night as the fight at the station is hard ;)

This morning I started the game before work, only to find myself back before the Corpser fight! Since I've now done it many times, I was able to beat him (even on Insane level with the "die for no apparent reason" bug), and went through to the next section... and the game froze up again at the checkpoint. Since I had to go to work, I didn't do the recovery process, but just shut down my PC; this afternoon, when I got home, I started Gears of War to discover... my checkpoints worked, and I was after the Corpser fight! Huzzah!

The upshot is, I think this particular vanishing checkpoints bug is caused by some process not being terminated properly if the game crashes, and interfering with your saves when you restart the game; it's only being terminated if you restart the game and close it properly, OR restart your PC! I wonder if the further bug of being flung back a checkpoint was cured by restarting my PC instead of restarting the game twice...?

I'm just glad I'm finally past the Corpser, after fighting him about 30 times :p

The mystery process is probably Games foe Windows Live.
