Hi,

I installed the game today. Mostly works ok, it runs fine, even played online a bit. But I am victim to the seemingly well documented problem of being unable to save my settings, control and graphics etc, after I close the game.

I'm signed into my live account and I've changed the small b to a big B in the registry and /shock /horror that made precisely no difference.

I'm running the Polish version and hence can't use the title update. What the **** is that about anyway?

Anyway, I feel like I've googled and searched this forum as much as I could. What did I miss?

I can concur that there are problems with specifically the post processing setting not staying set (others have said so too), but that's the only one I have a problem with and not all the time. For some reason it can out of the blue suddenly start retaining the setting.

The Title Update doesn't work with the Polish version? That's odd... didn't know it was region-specific... at any rate...

For some, this problem is easily remedied by unchecking the "Read Only" box inside the Gears of War folders' Properties dialogue and changing their security permissions to allow them to write to those folders. For others there are a couple oddball fixes I can't remember. Then there's some people like you that simply cannot fix the issue. This is what happens when Epic has made enough money and they don't care anymore.

What OS are you using? This could make a difference. Also, all what have you tried? I know you mentioned one or two things, but did you try others too? That will help us rule out what didn't work from what still could possibly work.

Defade, have you moved your "My Documents" folder to a different location? I found out that this causes problems -- the game tries to create some config files in "My Documents\My Games\Gears of War for Windows", but won't do this if "My Documents" is anywhere but the normal place.

The quick solution is to use TweakUI to move the location of "My Documents" back to the normal place briefly (don't need to move your actual files there!), then run the game and save settings, then move "My Documents" back to wherever you want, and then copy the "My Game\Gears of War for Windows" folder to "My Documents" in its new location. It'll update the config files after that, so this only needs to be done once ;)

Don't know what to suggest if that doesn't work! :o

Thanks for the replies. Would have replied sooner but I couldn't post this morning for some reason.

Anyway, the problem seems to have been having My Documents in a different location than default. Moved it back and its all ok now. Its a pain, but I can live with it.

So, thanks again all and especially dave-ros who seems to have hit the nail on the head. See you out there maybe ;).

No problem guys, glad to help ;)

Just to reiterate, you don't have to keep My Documents in the default place -- now that the config files have been generated, you can move My Documents wherever you want, and you can move "My Documents\My Games\Gears of War for Windows" to the new location -- the config files will be updated whenever you change options, it's just their initial creation that doesn't happen for some reason ;)

I use a second hard drive for most storage, and I though it made sense to have that drive as the my documents folder! Haven't had a single problem with it until this damn game ;0.

Ironically, these are the kind of strange problems you get with "Games for Windows".

Who decided that we need a folder for every game in My Documents anyway? Even the freaking Monopoly game I have decided to make one.

Just put everything in the folder I told you to use in the installer and keep your nose out of everywhere else

It might be so you can copy those files over easily if you switch hard drive etc., or to make it more convenient for different users on the same PC to keep their game files separate. However, it would be nice if they'd all agree on folder structure, and not keep creating their own folders at My Documents root level ;)
