Excellent work, looks very much polished visually. Great lighting and post processing.

Just out of curiosity where is that bridge going? Hard to tell from the screenshots but it looks like it just ends.

NEVERISM
02-07-2008, 05:05 AM
Thanks far and Kronos for replying & for the words!

The bridge has a staircase on either end for access from both spawn points. My initial idea for the "bridge" was for it to be used as storage or to control access to the opposing sides' roads but that idea has not yet been fully realized. These screens are abnormally cropped for this psuedo-presentation and do not showcase the entirety of the map.

** Added another screenshot above showing the steps from the bridge **

Updates will be coming and I appreciate/will appreciate any and all feedback! Thanks again

NEVERISM

Ran into some issues with my Editor and ended up reinstalling the entire game! Installed and ready to go now so the Beta -1.0 should be coming very soon...

Trying to fix some collision issues and add at least a few functioning coverlinks.

pfilotheterrible:

Here's a shot of the DOF settings that I have set... It should be noted that these are entirely experimental and I settled with them based purely on what I was seeing in the editor. Nothing official nor an endorsement for any specific settings! Hope it helps.

That is honestly the best looking Gears map I've ever seen (mod or not, LOL!). Great job!

Kronos
02-13-2008, 11:46 PM
Wow the map is much larger then I expected. Theres a few performance issues near the spawns but I dont know how you'd fix that seeing how open the area is, and since its practically only an issue at the spawn when looking toward the center it shouldnt be a huge problem. Maybe puting some culldistance on some objects might help but I doubt it'll be that much of a noticeable difference in performance gain, anyway other then the spawn points the rest of the map played out smoothly.

I wish you had completed the cover links before releasing a beta, but hopefully you'll release a new beta soon with them finnished, same goes for blocking volumes. If you had all of these in place before you released the beta it'd be easier to point out what issues there are with them, and whats missing. Nevertheless however, I'm glad you did happen to release a beta, as I was looking forward to trying it out.:)

Weapon placement looked fine but you never know until you actually get to play it with a few people and unfortunantly I didnt get the chance to do that yet.

Nothing much to say about the visuals, as they are pretty much on par with stock gears maps. However I'd suggest u use a post processing volume instead of the world settings for no real inparticular reason, its just nicer. I'd also recommend just as I did on Taffers maps to add some desaturation in your post processing settings, just a personal prefrence, Gears is a grittier game then UT where a variety of colors isnt the best choice for enviorments in the Gears universe but more of a slightly desaturated main color.

Despite what I've said, the map is gorgious, and definitely has some great potential I think. Cant wait to see another beta and later the final version.

Keep up the work!

NEVERISM

I agree with what you said about the Coverlinks and I will be finished with those
tonight/tomorrow... it does kind of diminish the point of getting feedback when
stuff isn't in place.

As for the performance issues, I will try out some cull distance on the higher-poly
objects and I also believe there are some lightmaps that might be unnecessary
as well. Other than that, not too sure what else can be done. Perhaps I can bring
the spawn points in a little closer and add the stone wall found in the center area to
the edges of the sidewalk which might help the performance. Keyword: might.

About your suggestion regarding the Post-Process volume, is that just a
preference of yours or is it something that would benefit every map that I make
in the future? Interesting. I will try a little desaturation and replace the world
settings with a volume. Thanks for your help and for taking the time to
download!

A question about the name. Every time I see the thread name I don't think it's this map, I imagine something more secluded. This looks like a very open map. Instead you could mention bridge in the title as that is the main feature

NEVERISM
02-14-2008, 12:47 AM
yeah, good point. When I thought of the title, it made sense to me because
even though this level is very open, etc. it is closed off from the outside world
(as in it isn't a part of a bigger city)

se·clu·sion

1 : the act of secluding : the condition of being secluded
2 : a secluded or isolated place

I also didn't want to call it "Bridge" or "Crossing" or "Overpass" because that is
just too generic. I will try to think of something better... any suggestions will be
considered, but I like the title as is!

This map is visually amazing. Honestly its one of the best maps so far. it looks professional and i mean that whole heartedly. Im curious about your experience with unreal editor, because from this map, it looks like you have a job using it. How long have you been using the editor, and how long did this map take?
GREAT WORK!!!

NEVERISM
02-14-2008, 02:21 AM
Thanks for the comments NewPCGamer! I first learned the Unreal Engine
with UT2004 and have been using that ever since 2005. Still use it!

I recently purchased both Gears of War and UT3 to get a hold of the updated
toolset and to create some custom content for both titles. So far, I have not
gotten to the "custom" side of things as I want to spend more time focused on
the editor-specific features/updates and to focus on other things such as
post-process effects, asset placement, lighting, etc.

After this map, I will be working on some custom stuff with my wife and
implement that within a Single Player scenario so that we can get to know
Kismet a little better.

This specific map was started on 2/03/2008 and has been worked on as much
as possible in-between my job and other priorities. Still putting in work to get
it optimized and playable.

From the amount of hours put in to the editor, I should consider it a career.

Every minute is worth it!
Thanks again-

Thanks Theron for the heads up... not too sure what might be the issue but I guess I can

I get a crash too. I have not patched Gears since I just installed it, perhaps that is what is crashing?

NEVERISM
02-29-2008, 08:44 PM
Thanks lobo2k7 for letting me know that it crashed for you as well.

My Apologies for those that downloaded and were unable to get it
to run. Currently uploading a new Beta version 1.1 that will hopefully
work. I cooked it on another PC and then opened it on a separate
machine and it worked for me without issue.

If you cannot open the map in game, please attempt to open the map
within the editor and see if it crashes just the same. If you want!

Wow, that's crazy looking- Thanks for the screen to illustrate your point.

Strange how the pillars of the bridge in the center are black as those are
ones that I applied a different lightmap resolution. I guess I should remove
that.

Not sure about the skydome texture or the ground texture as these are
issues I would normally expect with custom content that I imported rather
than provided materials. Perhaps I should use textures that are used in
other Multi player maps rather than Single player ones. Or maybe there is
something else I am not doing correctly.

Does it look the same in the editor? Is it the newest file? I'm gonna apply a
few changes and try once again to make it work. Maybe I can try and have
someone else cook the map and see if it changes the results. Thanks for the
feedback.

Hey I just ran thru your map for a good amount of time. I had no crashes and/or graphical issues, everything looked how it should for me. I even tried to get out of the map multiple amount of times, but failed :p which is a good job on your part. I didn't see any texture issues at all, and everything seemed perfect for me. Seems like you have the whole map covered cause I couldn't find anything wrong with it at all! Btw, great map, it will be fun to play with a lot of people!

Wicked... I'll play it tonight.

EDIT: So I just walked around the level. Visuals are top notch! Really got the details down.

However, this is just my suggestion, the lighting, not my cup of tea... too brown. Granted the PP effects are good it lacks contrast of colors, feels kind of odd to me at least. But hey if you dig it then that's great.

Thanks orbit18 and MozI for downloading and giving your feedback!

Will look into some color contrast for the level and possibly a reduction
in the fog, though I was diggin the monochromatic look! I was also
considering a nighttime version of this map using the skydome from Depot
and changing the atmosphere/mood. We'll see.

Thanks for the input again-

Currently the download is not available. It will be available this Saturday (12/13/2008) and this post will be updated at that time. If I knew how to add bots within my multiplayer maps, I would do it- As it stands now, it will be released as a generic map and nothing special!

Thanks for the interest and check back on Saturday.

Thanks liquidLeary, these are pretty old screens in need of updating but as you've mentioned, a download link is much more important! I've been meaning to show some love to this map, as it was one of my earliest attempts using the new Unreal tech. It needs some optimization and also some aesthetic fixes here and there-

I'm going to try and get another beta download/fresh screens up this evening! I would love any feedback for the weapon placement, cover density, performance issues, etc.

Cheers!

Thanks for trying it out LiquidLeary- I will have a look at the lighting and see what might be going on.
Are you seeing the "Lighting needs to be rebuilt" message on the upper-left corner of the screen or is it another type of issue?

Neversim, this is every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Im getting the same lighting issues as the other posters, but even with that I can see this is a gorgeous map. You are very talanted and really have a grasp of the Gears aesthetic. I'd have to say this is in the handfull of truly stock quality looking maps released, along with MozI's MP_Pipeline, some of Kantham's Lance maps and a couple of others. The PP is a little too desaturated for my tastes (Im more into the warmer more saturated look of GOW2), but thats purely a personal thing, and the scheme fits perfectly with the GOW1 look overall.
The layout looks to have huge potential too. I really hope the issues can be sorted out and this gets some play online.
Fantastic work.

Thanks a lot for the good words Crayfish. I appreciate it very much.

The PPE is definitely something that is highly subjective and changes from
person to person. Thankfully it isn't too difficult to experiment with and get
different results-

Any other suggestions/feedback will only help the map improve.

I will try to republish the map and upload it again to see if it fixes the lighting issues.
