Not to start a flame war, but Gears of War is suppose to go up against the PS3 in November right? Thats gotta be something for Epic eh? But i want to hear your take on the PS3... what you think is right and what you think is wrong about the system. Cuz of course, Epic is supporting the PS3 aswell with other titles like Unreal ^_^

Personally i have mixed thoughts about Sony's next gen console. I've always loved the Playstation, in fact the original playstation had all most of my favorite games... and the playstation two had tons and tons of third party support. And yet... i really didnt like the original xbox that much at the time. In fact i had my doubts about the Xbox 360 until i bought one i December. But with the Playstation 3, I cant pin point it, but i think Sony's missed the mark. Games i've seen so far look like games on the xbox 360 platform, when Sony keeps saying the system can do more. But there is of course Gears of war which looks better than anything 'playable' to the public thus far. Like Metal Gear solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are great, but they just showed us a 'in-game' trailer. But the biggest problem is the price point... sure its Blu-Ray and its much cheaper than buying one regularly... but i get a console to play video games... on occasions i do watch dvd's but regular DVD's are just as fine. Atleast Microsoft is letting the gamer choose if he wants an HD-DVD player instead of putting in the system and charging $200 more.

Another thing i would like to point out. From when the Xbox was released, the average data space used on a game went from 2.1 gigs to 3.7 gigs in the xbox's lifespan, nearly doubled. I really dont think blu-ray for games is THAT nessicary as i dont see companies using like 50 gigs for one game cuz from what i heard, the technology is coming out to compress data even more... I dont know... personally if there was no blu-ray and it was $100+ cheaper i would have a bit better thoughts on it...

Also the controller... i wish they did a bit more with it. They did add that nice 6 degree tilt to it... but really the motion sensors was the Nitnedo Wii's anyways, but they took away the dual shock which totally sucks and just added one button like the 360 has (which i gotta say doesnt look that good on the controller)

Now the good in my opinon... Sony is well known for their 'exclusive' franchises, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid (well did make a couple appearences on Nintendo systems), Final Fantasy (another one that had was on Nintendo systems), etc. Just the name alone makes me think of all the good games. I'm a big Japanese RPG fan, so i like japanese style games like Enchanted Arms (which is coming out for the 360 yay), and older games like Valkyrie Profile (#1 favorite game of all time), and Disgaea. Most Japanese based companies will lean towards the PS3 only because they basically have a better relationship with them, and the playstation is more wellknown in Japan. That said, errr... well thats mostly what i got

Heres my basic thoughts on the PS3

Pros
- Good Japanese and third party support
- Free online gameplay

Cons
- Priced at $499 and $599 >.<
- Controller doesnt turn me on
- $499 pack doesnt include HDMI or Wireless controllers
- Not that many good launch titles (except for Unreal Tournament 2k7 of course :D )

??
- Will the Free online service be a big bust to Sony? (it does take ALOT of $$ to run servers)
- Will the Cell Processor really do THAT much for the PS3?

Personally I lost most of my hype during E3... im most likely going to get a Playstation 3... but not for a while. Really the price isnt THAT bad considering I bought my PS2 for $550 CDN and my Xbox 360 for $500 CDN.... Im so lucky the Canadian dollar is going up like crazy. hehe. But yea im gonna wait for system sellers. Metal Gears Solid or Final Fantasy will most likely be mine.

What are your thoughts? Did you go to E3 and Play it? if so tell us what you think. (please dont start a flame war i want to hear what you thought)

I think its going to be a powerful system, those are my first thoughts. That being said, many developers have stated that it is very hard to develop a game for, which leads me to my next point. I also don't believe there will be many good launch titles at all. If I were to get a PS3 the only game I would buy is UT2K7. I like the design of the "dashboard" and the fact that it can act as a server, and it has a webbrowser, but Free online seems a bit fishy to me and im sure they will charge some sort of fee to play online, also the the pricing is a major turn-off for me since there is no way I would buy the $500 since it has no HDMI, wifi, and card reader and these are all things I would utilize very often if I owned a PS3, which would force me to buy a $600 video game console which is out of the question.

Long story short, im not buying one at launch.

First off, I have all the previous gen systems and I have a large collection of games for each. There's no bias here.

However, after seeing what Sony had in store for E3, I came away from it very underwhelmed. It's a powerful system but it just didn't have any games that really pulled me in. Plus that $600 price tag was definitely hard to swallow. Additionally, that motion sensor controller just seemed like a tacked on gimmick.

Sony has failed miserably, in my opinion. I currently own a PS2 and an Xbox. Not willing to shell out over $1,000 just to own both next gen systems, E3 was going to be a deciding factor for me. I'll admit I was slightly bias to the XBOX 360, due to the Halo factor (big fan), but if the PS3 was a technological powerhouse, I would have considered it.

But, like I said, I think Sony failed in showing that. For me, there were a couple of key items. The first was simple. Games like Madden 07, for both systems, look great, and there's no reason to pay an extra $200 to play it on a PS3. Second, the lineup of games for the XBOX 360 look great. Third, and I know this is a bit like the second point, but hey, who cares...Gears of War. This game, for me, truely was the nail in the coffin for the PS3. If I had any doubts which system to buy, Gears slapped me across the face and brought me to my senses.

In my opinion, Gears is shaping up to be a must have game, on what will end up being a must have system. My hats off to the Gears team...if I wore a hat, which I don't. But if I did, I'd take it off.

I will not be buying it at first launch just because i feel they have a lack of good titles. none are really innovative or anything... BESIDES UT2K7! that was the only reason why i wanted one until i heard a rumor that it was coming to the Xbox 360. Go to team xbox and read their latest preview from E3. They basicly said "Trust us, there is a reason why were still covering this game"! I hope that this is true. So i dont have to pay 600$ any earlier. :)

Thats outradious!! Sony really needs to get their act together! Have you guys read the thing about its Blue-ray player only running at 480p or something? Go to Ign for more info!

Well the lower quality version of the PS3 (the $500 one) doesnt run on HDMI so it downscales to 480... which sucks.

And Ut2k7 is going on PS3. It's win/win for Epic, and a non issue.

Just ask someone at Epic if UT07 will be on the 360,
they should know.

Hmm I saw the stage show demonstration on gamespot but I can't remember them saying it will come to the 360. It will come to the PC tho.

This is what Gamespy had to say about UT 2007 for the 360

"This game is currently scheduled for release on PC, and is expected for release in some form on next-gen consoles as well, although exact plans for release have not been confirmed -- the PS3 version has already undergone heavy development, while a possible Xbox 360 version has been considered but not actively developed. Considered means: really good chance we will see it on.
:p. imo, they would really miss alot of buyers by not bringing it to 360.

Sony is in deep trouble. Xbox 360 is where it's at. I just got home from work and it's 3:30 am in the morning, so I don't feel like fleshing out a reason. The systems speak for themselves already.

in my opinion more people would by UT07 for the 360 because it would be cheaper, the game would be enhanced with xbox live and you could have exclusive content for download with the xbox-marketplace.

but im sure it will go very well on the ps3 aswell.

Folks,

This is not a forum for discussing PlayStation3 or the relative merits of the various game consoles. This is strictly about Gears of War.
