View Full Version : To UT3 server admins--Custom content!

This is aimed to all the UT3 server administrators. A lot of custom content for the game has been released now. So far though, I can hardly find a server with a custom map.
The only thing that you can find relatively easy is CustomUTv1a (UTComp) for UT3... Custom maps and content in general is starting to pick up and having it on servers would grately atract players.
Thank you for your time.

server owners know there is custom content out there.
The first problem is that there is no compression being used during redirect. Not a serious issue, but the more custom content the longer the download will be to join a server. People will not hang around if they have to download 100 megs just to join a server.
The other issue is being disconnected from the server when a custom map is loaded if you don't previously have it. Sometimes even if you have it installed you are still disconnected. You can reconnect without an issue and download the map via redirect if you don't already have it. If anyone knows a way to fix this please post a thread so the rest of us can follow.
Until those issues are fixed, alot of servers owners won't run custom content because we all know when someone gets disconnected they usually don't come back.
I really hope that these items are on the list of fixables for patch number 2. I love custom maps and can't wait till i have a bunch to host on my server.

now this is just food for thought.....
if you were to take a file server, and build a website around it, lets call the website Project M
map creators upload their maps on to Project M....
if your hosting custom maps on your server, you would add Proj M to the description for example, indicating that its a custom server, and they should use the Project M utility to make sure they are up to date with the maps which are in the rotation.
The project M Utility i mention, would basically be an FTP Client, which connects to the server, and lists all it finds on the server in to a CheckListBox , deducting the ones which the player already has. they then have the option to download ( in other words update) any maps they do not currently have, thus enabling them to play on any servers marked Project M ....
im sure you get my meaning.
is it possible? of course it is :) i done it for another game.
will i do it for this one? i doubt it.. my time is tied p with the tweaker, and a simular system as above to deliver mutators to people

I personnaly rent a public server which I want to be a "refuge" for custom maps @ DM and WARFARE that are my favourites mods...
You can already find on it :
GaelClassic, F2F-Gael, Intercept, Deck-FPS (not really custom :p), Age, Stalwart, and many will follow but I must confess that what Killerus is saying is true...
When guys don't have the map you voted they give up and go on another server, I made the experience yesterday..

If you enjoy CTF LGI at 135 then check out my clan's private server. The password is displayed in the server name.
All custom maps plus the default ones pushed all the way down the bottom in MapVote.

I'm not so sure that compression will bring so many changes.
I've just tested compression (uz2),using UT2004 ucc command to compress UT3 maps and the compression is about 10%.
Ex (some tests):
Maps:
VCTF-UT3X-DamWaterFlow-V05.ut3: 23.5Mb-> 21.3Mb: -9.4%
Dm-Krodan.ut3: 49Mb -> 44.4Mb: -9.4%
WAR-Torlan_Necris.ut3: 79Mb->69.7Mb: -11.8%
Packages:
NEC_Deco: 38Mb->29.2:-23%
WAR-Torlan_Necris_LOC_ESN.upk: 4.45Mb->4.42Mb: -1%
Music Package:
A_Music_RomUT07: 18.2Mb->17.9Mb: -1.7% (not amzing since music files are ever "compressed (ogg))
So compression won't reduce so much filesize for download (with older UT games, the compression ratio on average for maps was about 40% (-60%)) unless the compression system is totally different as the UT2004 (.uz3?)

running custom maps on all of the {hLk} servers, prob is as stated above, upong initial attempt to download players get invalid url: error. If they reconnect to the server it will download. Redirect w/o compression isnt too bad if u have decent upload speed. The bigger issue is players dont know about the bugs so they dont try to reconnect (takes 2 - 3 times sometimes to actually get the map and connect. Once the bugs are fixed I bet more peeps will be willing to run custom maps.

We have few custom maps on our WARFARE server. All the maps are made from scratch and the download is pretty fast even with out comprs.
You can try them under WARFARE X-CadeMutators (dont forget about the invalid url: error and recconect after a map change ;)). Also you can visit our website at www.x-cade.com to find out more.

I have a couple of custom maps on my server. It redirects and the download is pretty fast from what I hear from others. I don't mind putting more up - I just wish more peeps would join :)

Am using all custom maps on my iCTFserver, default maps dont play to well with instagib and wall dodge ;) I also offer a map pack dl on my web to support this till the url error is fixed. My redirect is a pivate one and I upload all maps to there also uncompressed, it all works fine albeit except for the url error and the odd package error from maps cooked with the old version....Would be nice too see Epic fix these problems, do we need to take up a collection to get this done?...Maybe they should have asked for a hundred for the game to allow money to fix all the stuff not working when it was released. Is the problem that the kids are back in school now so is no one to work on these probems?.. Was just thinking out loud...Maybe I should ask some of the programers in my clan to see if they can help out...

I'm right there with you Nasrott...
Dear Epic,
I, along with many in my clan eagerly awaited UT3 to come out. Most are die hard fans of the UT series who even spent decent money to build a computer to run the game smooth. Now, people can respond to this with the usual "If you don't like it ...don't play it" so if you're one of them don't waste your time typing! I am in complete disbelief that Epic would release a game that has so many major and minor things either borked or completely missing in their "golden game" that made them who they are. As a server admin, I gave up about a month ago trying to figure out how to make my server as user friendly as possible. I'm sorry, but like Nasrott did isn't good enough. What? Do I have to advertise in the MOTD for people wishing to play on my server to log out of the game...go to my website...download files...install them..hey! Now you can start UT3 up again and join in on my server!? Who is going to do this other than people in my clan? How long has this game been relased? How much PR has Epic given to the PC user and technical support for server admins? Hmmm..Yeah, I'll hold my breath for the next patch which MAY fix redirect, compression of files and give us a basic webadmin. I don't think these things are too much to ask for since Epic had no problem giving us these things in all the other releases. I'm ok with changing the look and feel of the game in a new version but taking away or not including basic fuctionality in a "final" release is not good for business. Sad to see servers barely alive and many UT players playing other games now. Epic, I think you dropped the ball big time and every day that goes by you have lost more supporters and a chance to win their interest back. I for one am sad to see this game crap out like this.
Sincerely,

Bump and then some from a faithful but very disappointed die hard fan since ut99. Epic, you have an entire community waiting. No need to WOW us. Just do what you've done in the past, provide a high quality game with tools needed to support it. Time is ticking.

I just posted this in the general section.
Well I just seen what happens when you have custom content on your server. The server went from full 16/16 to 2/16 when it switched over to a custom map. Nice. I guess people are stuck with the same maps. HOPEFULLY just for now.!?!
We will see how long we keep the server for if this is not fixed SOON!
I can't even run our own map we made??? Well I can if I want to play by myself.
Also like I posted in other topic... at least EPIC tried. We will see though.

There is no problem with downloading custom content. You dont really need compression. Example: Torlan 1.0.0.9... 77 megs less than 3 mins to download on my server NO BFD!
