Description:Here is my first ut3 map, but I made two maps for 2k4. This is the "remake" of my first 2k4map. I changed some parts of the layout to stick better with the ut3 gamplay. The theme is also a bit more oriental than the previous version.

Indeed it does look great CJ ... I have the UT2K4 map and so it will be cool to see the changes ... so yeah whenever there is a working link for it that would be great. :D

Ahhhh...I downloaded the 2k4 version.....I played an earlier version of it.
Sad its so small.....lovely eye candy map but nothing for my TDM taste ;)

Just played a match on Calahan-SE UT2k4 version against Malcolm and Brock on Masterful and once again I was reminded of how much better I am in Ut2K4 than UT3 and how much more difficult the bots are now. Anyway if this remake is really like the original then this is going to be one very nice level. That level has some nice meshes put together very well and really solid weapons layout and good placement of pickups like Health and Armor and no Udamage.

Yeah it really is only made for max of 2v2 but really it feels perfect with 3 combatants. It is small but nice. With just two bots I was constantly getting shot at and having to stay alert. I can't imagine trying to squeeze 6 bots in this arena.

What a beautiful map you've created, i like how even though its oriental, you have elements of stone (non orental looking stone) added to it, i'll be sure to give feedback asap.
Can you remake ColdFire? I loved that map.

That is not exactly the right reason: few month ago unrealplayground didn't require any approbation time, so I thought it would be the same now, but no...
Anyway I'm uploading it on mediafire, filefront and other hosts like mapraider, so you could dl it soon :)
Concerning the changes, there are some sreens to show them:

@Mr.UglyPants: I thought I will remake coldfire for ut3 too, but imo it is too much based on "tricky moves" like walldodges double dodge or "rankin planks" to be played in ut3.

Thanks man ... yeah we are a bunch of map junkies around here so always expect feedback .. especially when the level is as good as this one. Anyway I've been waiting for hours so I'll just say thanks ... time to go and play this baby! :D Oh yeah I knew that wasn't the reason I was just a little frustrated and was hoping it would motivate you to hurry up and get us some more links.

Now you can get to the sniper in three ways:
-with the jumper I added:

I also replaced the corned in wich there was a health item and a tree by two stairs to have more ways to get to the first floor:

I deleted the big boxes wich were useless imo, so it's easier to take the shock now:

Wow ... this is nice but it kind of shocked me how many differences there are between this and the UT2k4 version. I do think you should make the Flak more interesting to get by placing it back on top of a crate like in the original. I know its your map and you definitely know it better than anyone that is why I am a bit surprised. No planks at all? No steam lift jump pad ... and a jump pad in a place there wasn't one ... no plank for the superhealth that you lift jump to? Lots of changes make this map play differently from your original and the size seems larger and more spread out so that 4 or 5 bots could fight in this level. But it looks sweet I will say that ... it is darker than the original, don't know if you really intended that but I did want to let you know. The final should be really interesting based on the comments you receive. I'll be looking forward to it. :)
Edit: LOL ... ha I see you and I posted at the same time ... and you read my mind! Thanks for answering all my questions ... as I was thinking them! :eek::eek: :D

Also the planks and crates added to the atmosphere and really enhanced the visuals and they worked even if you didn't do fancy moves ... I know because I don't do fancy moves. Something to think about. :) I really miss the steam jump pad ... it really gave the original a little something extra ... y'know what I mean. Also is the Superhealth still somewhere on the level ... please say it is. lol

I think you're right concerning the crates and planks in a decorative point of view, I think I should add some small ones where they was...
And yes, the steam jumpads were much better than those ones, but now the jumpad actor comes with a mesh and Y don't know if hidding it still allow player to use it.
That's the same for the weapodbases, if you hide it, you hide the weapon too...
PS: no keg anymore, sorry :p, it unbalance so much the match in duel: you get at the right place at the right time, you can take the belt, jump to the sniper to take the keg and finaly jump too the armorvest, in about 5 secs...
But may be I should replace the medium health item by 5/6 small healths, so you can take them even if you've more than 100.

The problem with not having the superhealth is that since there is no more adrenaline based powers a player cannot ever get to 199 health and at least with the superhealth you have that chance especially since you can only ever max out at 50 armor on your level as well. I think that is what many mappers are not taking into account when they don't offer the shield belt and SH in this version of UT3. Again just something to think about. Thanks for adding some planks and crates back though. :)
Also those mountains in the backdrop are perfect candidates for some depth of field effect with some blur ... like in Shangri-la and Carbonfire.

At the origin, the ut2k4 version was designed for duel, and I saw it was also quite playable in 2v2 but lot of people told me that it was too small for that.
In the ut3 version I tried to keep this size because such a simple layout is not adapted to 4v4 or 5v5 TDM (TAM soon?).
Imo 1v1 is the best account, if you play it online. Offline 1v1 is a bit to slow cause the bots don't try to find you but they just take all weapons and item, so 2v2 is better here.
PS: there is no pathnodes in this beta so don't care about silly bot's pathes

Sad to hear, though i agree, well i can't wait to see this remake done and i can't wait to see a new map of yours created. i'll post feedback in the coming days.
I tried it, i'm running an 8800GTX with 2 gigs of ram, all the Epic maps i run at around 58 to 62 fps, this map, it usually stays around 25 or 30, in many places like the Link Gun corridor or the rox pickup the damn fps drop to 18 or 14. This map looks amazing, but it needs optimization, alot of it.
I'll give more feedback in the new year.

wow that's strange, I've got a 8800gts and 2Go and I'm always over 50fps, sometime over 90 O_o
At first I had the same problems because of some light functions using too many resources, but I fixed it...
And I read some tutorial by Hourences about optimisation on UT3, but it seems not to be adapted for this kind of map

Please add bot pathing to the next beta ... it is no fun testing maps with bots who offer little challenge. Just a little would be great especially given the size of the level.

This map is amazing. Definitely a keeper, even if you just left it like this.
Beautiful, and this is a map that the darkness works for; it adds to the mood and makes the dynamic lighting from the weapons and characters stand out.
It stays near my tweaked 60 FPS cap most of the time, but it could definitely use some optimization, as most maps around this size don't go lower than 59 FPS for me =P
Is the name Calahan at all inspired by Dune's Castle Caladan? I definitely get that vibe from it.

Btw I made some changes, I'll post the new beta tomorrow. I added botpath, some crates and planks, fixed the lifts (sound and speed), added some blur to the far cliffs, and replaced the healphpack near the sniper by 7 health fials, but I'm not sure I'll keep it.
Finaly I shoud try to find/make a mesh for the steam jumpads, but may be for the next beta :)
EDIT: I still can't optimize it cause the new optimisation system don't allow me to "share" a terrain between two zones...

Je l'essaierai demain alors :p Les screenshots ont l'air cool en tout cas, bien qu'un peu sombre... Par contre je me souvient plus si celle d'UT2004 l'était autant, et je peux pas aller vérifier parce qu'il me sort un runtime error au lancement. :/ (Faut que je réinstalle donc...) En tout cas bon courage! :)

I'm like Beta 2 alot more, well since its way more playable, but still, my system for no reason chugs at points like at the LinkGun, or at the mouth of the Flak/rox tunnel looking toward either the waterfall/Stinger or Rox/ that hanging Lamp.
Just a thought, but i check around to see where the fps was falling, and, some times it would just die on the wall/ground, i dunno why.
The Enforcer ammo near the rox pickup (up the stairs), i dunno why but i've never been a fan of Enforver pickups, try it with a rox ammo instead and see if it works better.
Also, i play EVERYTHING on max, all settings as high as i can on 1680 x 1050, also, when i try Shangrila in the center fountain for the UDamage it drops to 47 fps, but still, i dunno why the map gets such poor FPS, even without any enemies on screen the game gives me 43 fps, it should be at 58/62 not 30/43.
The curved arch at the 50 shield, where it connects to the wall looks a little well not finished.
I hope you'll add a menu picture, description and player count for the map. I hope your able to find the problem with the map.
Lastly is anyone else running at full getting the same fps problems as me?

the link and the waterfall are the two points where the engine render the whole map, that's why your fps drops there.
But I still don't understand why yours drops to 30 fps whereas mine always stays over 50...
You've got a better graphic card, 2Go like me... May be your CPU is too slow? I got a core 2 duo E4300@2.4Ghz, what's yours?
PS: I play at full details too

Ugly, you just edit the ini the file for the map and add this as the last line:
basically NumPlayers=x to y Players where x is the lower limit and y is the upper limit
i.e. NumPlayers=6 to 10 Players
Now about the level ... it is fantastic ... the new changes really capture the spirit of your original perfectly. I love it man ... really love it. But the performance does need to be worked on ... I was not really impacted but I could tell it felt sluggish in places even though I was getting high frames ... and I run two 8800 GT SCs ... I can imagine it will be much worse for people who don't have at least these in SLI or a GTX/Ultra card. And this is a small map ... you can't have such a small map getting worse performance than War and VCTF maps, and I only had two bots (this level is perfect for 3 players). Once you fix this I would say you have a final. Great job and thanks. :)

It feels like it is heavier if you know what I mean ... its kind of hard to describe because I really don't suffer any frame drops but I can feel a difference between this level and the other ones (official and most user created). :confused:

Hmm, i think i understand what you say, whats your fps counter say, like 40-30? If so then thats why, for some odd reason the UE3 engine runs fine on any fps higher than 40, anything lower and you feel it even though you usually don't get slowdowns, or hell you do.

Yes I think I know what you say, for exemple you move quickly your mouse and
the "view" moves too but a little slower...
I had the same thing before the first beta cause every lights exept sun were like the fire ones, a bit "blinky". But now only the small lights on the floor and the fires uses light function, so you should not have this kind of trouble...
I'll look for a solution like lower the light map res near thoses lights or something
EDIT: Btw I read somewhere that cooking the map gives it a better fps, but a cooked map don't allow you to duplicate package content, and that's really restrictive, so I'll cook it when it's done :p

Cooking c'est mieux lorsque tu la passes en téléchargement pour les autres parce que ca optimise le chargement de la map, et plus que probablement la map elle même en même temps.
Je l'ai pas encore essayée (FileFront buggait tantôt quand j'essayais de downloader) mais je vais donner des nouvelles d'ici peu (Surtout pour le framerate) vu que je viens de l'avoir (finalement après de nombreux essais infructueux).
PS: Sorry for those who don't speak french :D
EDIT: Bon alors moi j'ai pas les problèmes de chute de FPS notables comme les autres l'ont exprimé, mais j'ai pas vérifié avec stat fps voir si ca baissait en dessous des 60 FPS standard. Par contre, tu ferais mieux de la cook, parce que le loading plus long qu'une map Warfare c'est bof quoi :/. Et pis le cooking n'implique pas la disparition de tes fichiers dans le dossier "Unpublished", tu peux toujours travailler sur ta map et dupliquer, renommer, etc. le contenu de tes packages et quand tu sort une nouvelle version tu fais "Publish" à nouveau et c'est bon. Comme ca on a une map optimisée et toi tu as toujours tes "bases" :)
Sinon a part ca ca me rappelle bien ta map d'UT2004 en beaucoup plus joli (UE3 oblige) mais ca reste très sombre tout de même, et j'ai cru apercevoir un beau ciel bleu comme en plein jour, ce qui ne colle pas trop avec l'aspect sombre du niveau. J'ai pas testé avec des bots, mais j'ai trouvé qu'il y avait quand même de bonnes choses mises en places pour le gameplay, notamment les lift jumps et jumpers qui permettent des bons échanges entre les différents niveaux, cependant je trouve qu'il y a un peu trop de fioles de vie +5, par exemple les 8 près du sniper encouragent un peu le camping si tu vois ce que je veux dire. Non seulement on peut éviter des dommages en restant en haut mais en plus on a la possibilité de restaurer presque la moitié de sa vie et même d'aller au delà de 100 PV.

But man, i'm amazed, i'm ****ty at French (i barely pass) and i understand most of it, too bad exams aren't on verbally translating paragraphs... sigh. But i digress.
More or less, he is right, on the sniper stuff, those flasks do give campers a good incentive to well camp.
That whole cooking thing might just be the problem, i'll wait to bug you with annoyances till your finished (or cooked it), just remember to post when you have.

with the feedback from another topic, I and some minor changes, almost all graphics:
-the outdoor water is more translucent and less reflective
-I used a better material with distortion with the steam
-the sky is a bit more cloudy and there is a little rain, like the 2k4 version
-the postprocess now makes the screen a bit brighter and so fixes the lighting "problem"
-fixed some collisions bugs and added blocking volumes
-increased the culldistance of some static
there are only 4 health flask near the sniper
sreens an d DL soon :D

Ut3 crashes in about 10 minutes when playing DM-Calahan2! Never happend on any map! Also I have a lot of fps drops. My rig: Intel Core Quad 6600, 4 gb ddr-2, geforce 8800 GTX.
Fix it please! This is the best custom map now! I love the theme and UT2kX feeling!

Check your system dude, I have almost exactly the same thing as you (Q6600, 2GB RAM and GeForce 8800 GTS 640) and I do not have any of these crash problems. The only real affliction is the FPS drops at three points: near the waterfall, near the link gun and near the flak cannon, the sniper rifle, the armor vest... Yeah, three areas xD
Optimize-moi ca s'il te plait ca me fait peur quand le compteur des frames vire au jaune :eek:

Man, seems to only happen to us 8800GTX guys. F**k that sucks.
Well i sort of figured a little bit of the FPS bug out. It has alot to do with looking from say one area to another, like from Stinger through the lift you'll loose FPS, from Link pickup looking to the Bio/shield belt pickup you loose FPS, so maybe that'll help you figure out whats causing the sudden drops. Cause understand, when viewing the Stinger from the top of the Shock Rifle pickup, no fps drop. But opposite and it drops.
So far, this is the most playable version yet, its mostly stays at 43 or 48 (though odd, its better than 35 cause you start to have slow mouse response rates).
Can't wait for another optimized beta4. Thanks for bearing with us 8800GTXer guys glator.

I don't have crash problem with any game, and any map! Only with DM-Calahan2 (especially, when I in the fountain with shieldbelt). My computer turns off! :O
And about fps- maybe try to reduce grass ?

I once saw 28 FPS, that's the thing with the yellow frame counter... A bit low I think, it needs optimization. ;)

what I understand worst is that I've got a worse config than you (e4300 8800gts 320mo 2go) and no drops, no crashes, no slow mouse...
The only possible difference is may be the drivers, I use omega driver 2.169.21 (optimised version of the original 169.21 driver).
The last thing I can try is streaming the map, but in such a little map it would have no effect... They don't use it even in WAR maps
EDIT: BTW what's your game version?

Love this map been playing it a lot. The only prob I've found is there a sticky spot inbetween the rocks on the upper walkway near the armour vest. Not a huge issue, but detracts the tiniest bit from this quality map. I am on a beta2 copy so ill have to update maybe already fixed and sorry if someone has already pointed this out :)

Oui mais en quel niveau de detail tu joues aussi? Quelle résolution, etc.? Moi c'est 1680x1050 tout a fond et j'ai 60FPS (locked) sur toutes les maps officielles, DM-Fractal (la mienne) descendant seulement à 55FPS quand les portes du piege se referment. Alors quand je vois 28FPS a un endroit sur ta map ca peut pas juste etre qu'elle est trop détaillée... Parce qu'elle ne l'est pas. Le problème se situe forcémment ailleurs... S'agit de le trouver, et c'est ca qui n'est pas évident.
La solution provisoire ca serait de rajouter du brouillard et de remettre les cull distances comme ils étaient avant, mais au moins avec le brouillard on verra pas les choses disparaitre... Cependant il me semble aussi que yavait des problemes de performance, meme quand les cull distances etaient plus bas, donc c'est peut etre pas ca non plus...
Si seulement il y avait un moyen de vérifier le nombre de polygones calculés ingame comme dans UT2004, juste en tapant "rmode 1" dans la console, on pourrait trouver le probleme tout de suite. Ca doit forcémment etre possible dans UT3 mais je connais pas la commande...

I've finally found the source of the fps drops: it is from the light fonctions of the fires
I removed all of them and now I've got 75fps at the link instead of 50.
But I actualy wanna keep them cause I think it's really better for the "ambience" of the map. So I'll search a solution and realease the beta4 without that problem :D

-no lightfunction, so no fps drops (I hope so)
-minor bug fixes and collisons such as trees
I think the next release will be the final one. Now I need to put the screen, desc etc...

Wow, me a Dark have like the exact same system except for the core his being quad mine being duo.

Amazing work glator, you fixed it, your no lightfunction got rid of it, now my fps barely drop bellow 58!
I hope the no lightfunction doesn't take away from the map.
Overall, after finally being able to play with no fps drops, i gotta say i love the map, beautiful visuals of a old roman/gothic (almost) castle, coupled with great flow, this is a winner.I only found that near the sniper you could get stuck, in the corner that looks into the rox, i got stuck, and i saw a bot get stuck near the 50 shield. I just hate these new bots, i hate how on experienced they can't kill you in 1 direct rox hit but they play like an experienced bot should, but on anything higher they effing are Godlike! I pray to God Epic makes them less Godlike once they get the damn 360 version of UT3 done, also i pray they do a high ad campaign for it so more peoples get it (even for PC).
Remember, description, map picture and player count.

EDIT: Ya toujours ce malheureux problème mais bon je pense pas qu'en plein milieu du jeu quelqu'un aille se placer tout près de la chute calé entre deux static meshes pour regarder la chute de travers. Mais bon je préfère t'en avertir, a part ça le reste fonctionne très bien :) 60FPS partout.

Pour ce qui est de la solution que tu cherches, il n'y aurait pas un moyen d'activer un LOD sur les light functions? Comme ca a partir d'une certaine distance le light function disparait pour être remplacé par un static light et donc ca optimiserait vachement tout en ayant les quelques light functions tous près qui s'affichent encore.

well, I think I have fixed all thing wich had to be fixed, so I'm about to make the full release.
I'm choosing the music, but I'm not sure wich one I'll take. I think A_music_RomNecris01_DM is the best one for thi map. What's you opinion?
PS: to listen to the music, open Ued, then the generic browser, and open the A_music_arrengment package. Then look for A_music_RomNecris01_DM in the package list, and make sure "soundcue" is checked.

Awesome, remember the description, player count and map preview picture (just a picture, for god sake don't go ruining the picture with writing saying who the mapper is for we know who you are.
So i'm guessing your going to take a break from mapping after you give this a final or do you have more maps in store?

Glator, this release is perfect. I have very good fps and my computer doesn't crash after 5-10 minutes! Thank you for the best custom (and retail...) map novadays... Just love this style, gothic castle, beatiful colors, mrrr :D Maybe after Calahan2 you can convert UT3 DM-Aristocraty (http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com/map_hub.php?mid=7029) ? :D
I think, that RomNecris01 will be ok.
