is there any plans to have dedicated servers to prevent host advantage?
and not to sound like an idiot, but why arent all games made with dedicated servers, or at least with the option of us running dedicated servers on say a lesser pc in the house? thanx

by the way this is my first post, just got the computer, this week, that can finally run the game i bought a month ago....been mostly building in the editor though.

A "dedicated server" in your own house means you are the host anyway when you play the game on the server. The problem of "host advantage" isn't going away. Having a good connection is critical in any online shooter and that's not going to be solved by a dedicated server. All that will do is give everyone equally ****ty connections, or some people better and others worse as it's all dependent on the server. Also dedicated servers if EPIC ran them would cost alot of money. If random people run them, again it might as well be the same as someone being the host.

If you don't want laggy games, don't join them. Get better faster internet connections or play with people that are geographically closer to you. I.E. if you are in the USA, don't join a server on the other side of the Earth.

Couldn't have said it better :)

not all games should be run on dedicated servers. looking at halo 3:

1) it takes a good 5-10-15 minutes to find a game

2) if you have a horrible connection to the host, you have to worry about one person, if you have a horrible connection to the server, your going to get killed by everyone you run into pretty much

think about this. a dedicated server where the host doesn't play on his own server. OOHHHH.

i wouldn't mind hosting games for my friends for when we want a fair game. they should have at least included the option. they could have even made an achievement like rainbow six vegas did for hosting a 16 player match that can only be made on a dedicated server.

I cant understand why anyone would argue against having a dedicated server option. If its not better than non-dedicated then why would any games offer it?

It would be nice to have a server that you know will give you a good ping and is always available.

As it is I have no idea what I'm getting into when I connect to a server. Could have an 80 ping or a 400 ping. Host could get bored at any moment.

so how are games on STEAM hosted? I thought they were on dedicated servers and not machines setup at players houses. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The fools posting in this thread don't know about dedicated servers. This game needs them, for PC anyway. Epic doesn't need to run them, we do. If there was a dedicated server available I'd put it on my dedicated server and run it. Bye bye 0 ping host advantage.

I remember the Unreal Tournament game for the regular Xbox. It had the option to host dedicated servers so that others could play games on your host. There was also a leaderboard for it, so it kind of showed you the people cool enough to leave their Xboxes running while they weren't playing so that you could. Also, I think it would be a novel idea to allow other players to set up dedicated servers from their connections and to show the ping of the server. Not to mention if you offered achievements for it, people would be more likely to set them up.

If there where a dedicated server function we would probably seen GSP's hosting servers for gears of war which would again help out the host advantage issue.

Just because I bashed your contribution a little, I was talking about PC dedicated servers. A little different from a consoles, we don't leave our PC's running on our home connections.

No one is saying it would be bad to have the option. It would be great to have the option. But they aren't very likely to add it post-release.

Well in the event that dedicated servers are not a possability, I think some standards should be put in place to restrict those who have ****ty connections from hosting games, i.e. if you have dial-up you gotta join someone elses game cuz no one is gonna want in yours. Additionally, there should be better implimented localized matchmaking. That way a player could so choose to look for games hosted within a given radius of his state, country, or continent in priority to those that go beyond it.

And why are we getting forum censored when GoW is rated "M"?
