Changelist:

- Paths were fully reworked.
- The little platform size was increased by ~10% and outdistance a little.
- The bottom area of the main platform was spaced a little.
- The sky was simplified for better view.
- The spaceship was moved out.
- Some minor eyecandy improvements here and there.
- Added the PlayStation3 version.

Oh yeah man ... I like this one as well ... like I said I can't get enough of these good fight in space maps that are not too big and not too small ... thanks for the cool remake man. I like how the lighting looks in the pic and the radar dish is a nice visual addition. All these remakes are great because each one has its own distinctive take on the classic and that is cool when you are dealing with a good map and talented folks. :)

nice design.

though I noticed in this and many other space maps some lack of haze or something around the planets. They look pretty clean and you can also see their poly edges. You could put some more work there, but besides that it looks good :)

Nice but I have one request ... please remove that space ship that is just sitting there looking so phony it is distracting me from playing. Seriously it really destroys the illusion of fighting in space because it is completely static ... it doesn't even look like it is floating or anything .... just stuck like someone hung a picture. Could you add some thruster things to make it look like it is at least floating. I think the map would be better to just leave it out.

This is the best remake of Q3DM17 yet! Even the weapons remain faithful to the original.

I agree about the spaceship comment tho.

Cool to see yet another take on this awesome map. While I would normally complain tht too many ppl have done this map, there is enough difference between them so its ok. You take seems to be the one with the best look to it. Thanks!

It's not perfect though, but it's the best we have so far. I would agree about removing the space ship. Also, it is ever so slightly on the small side. But it should not be to much bigger, or it will be ruined.

The perfect size is when it is actually compelling to use the portals that are in the map, but it is also fine to not use them. Right now, it's tipped towards avoiding them because the map is ever so slightly small. This is most apparent with the size of the multi-jump pad in the center of the map, the distance of the sniper platform and the distance of the UDamage platform. The ambient sound volume could also stand to be a tad lower.

When the next patch comes out and redirect is fixed, I will be hosting the AHK DM server, and this map has a first class direct ticket into the rotation. :)

You are entitled to your opinion of course but I would have to say this one is the MOST fun and has the MOST to offer. Have you even tried the FINAL version?

This one is also excellent but imo it is spoiled by that static spaceship ... it really ruins the immersion factor .. while the one I linked to has no issues like that whatsoever.

I don't like that one so much. The music is annoying, the flying junk in space constantly confuses you and looks like another player, and it feels to slow or big. And I do not like the modifications from the original. I am open to change, but I feel the stuff added on that version are not to good.

I agree about the spaceship on this version, and I said it wasn't perfect, and I gave some quite detailed pointers on how to make it near perfect. I just think it's the best one so far and you are right everybody has their own opinion.

Yes my impressions of the CD version are based off of the 1.5 Final.

Well at least several of us do agree that the space ship should go ... and then I would say for me this would be a near tie ... closer to the original and technically it is excellent so that gives it big points. So I would be able to really lose myself in space but I like having the outer platforms to jump out to and grab armor (and some other hidden goodies) so that is why I will always prefer the CD version.

Great Job! I like this one too! Very nice visual and somewhat closer to the original scale. I will keep this on on my map list too! I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinions and therefore I would have to say that each one of the versions of Q3DM17 are great in their own ways. (From a simple black skybox to the loud music and confusing space junk) Great Map! GAME ON!

imo the three I have play so differently I think of them as different levels. I have to agree this one plays closest to the original while for me CD is the most fun and the other one I have has Stingers on it so that makes it unique but the jumppads aren't implemented as well. So I agree that are all excellent levels that have the same layout but done in different ways.

I know I was saying that the spaceship mesh should be taken out and I still stand by that but tbh in a fast paced match 6 or more combatants you don't even notice it but knowing its there bugs me.:p

I Liked this map, it has a nice look to it, just a few small complaints tho,

The ship, that a few ppl mentioned already is off-putting, i'd remove it if i were you.
The recomended bots for the level is a bit high too, i wouldn't recomend more than 4 for this map, and its ideal for 1v1 or 3 player matches.

Other than that, its the first map i've kept on my machine cause of the quality and playability of it! Good job!

Maybe you need to play at a higher skill setting then ... there are plenty of weapons ... have you even played the original level this is based on? Sounds to loud ... huh? The bots were using every weapon in the book on me and were especially good with the sniper rifle ... of course I played this map on Adept. I don't mean to sound harsh woooo you should know that but I just don't agree with you on your observations for this level. Especially the bots ... but I admit they used the RL and Flak a lot but wouldn't you given those are the two most powerful weapons in the game ... and the Flak is deadly from really long range?

I am not really sure which is my favorite version...At the beginning I thought that the closest version to the original would be the one that I would download, but I honestly like the feel of all three. It just goes to show how much of a difference a few changes can make. I do have to say tho, this is the best looking of the three although I prefer altogether empty space. Overall very good and thank you for this.

Edit: ...I am still waiting for someone to make a CTF version of this with one flag on top and one on the far platform...very fun ctf for a few players

We love new maps folks, please stop making longest yard remakes ;) Give us something unique and designed by you. Cheers all you talented mappers

Well considering that these maps are coming out just weeks after the game was even released how do you know these maps are not just practice maps the authors are using to learn the editor better before they do their own work? Maybe they are just sharing their test work instead of just keeping it on their hard drives. All I am saying is don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. And I am sure there is no competition among the four level designers ... they are just doing what they like to do and sharing with anyone who wants it.

I'm planning to make another version (the last one) following your suggestions and share it with you, cause i'm already working on a brand new one.

As I said in the first post, i made this map just to get used to the new UED. There's absolutely no competition with the other Q3DM17 authors (and trust me, i like their work and play it).
Why I made this map? Simply 'cause I loved it in my Q3 days.
Why I share it? Because I think it turned out well. :)

^^^ That is really good news ... without that Space ship this level will be near perfect. I really like the way it plays and how well the jumppads work. I also like that transition from the UDamage platform back to the main platform. All great work. Looking forward to seeing more from you. Your lighting on the level was pro level ... it really brought out the realism in that level and allowed me to be totally immersed (until I would see that space ship ;) ). I would say that you really have learned how to get around in the new editor pretty well. :)

I agree! I was not trying to compete when I did mine. I was learning the editor. I am now however working on a completely oroginal level I made for UT 2004, bringing it into the UT3 world.

It was wrong of me to assume there was competition over this map. Wasnt really the point I was trying to make anyway. Just seemed a waste all this talent wasted on one map that was all. It was a bad implication and I only meant to say it respectfully as I think a lot of peeps in the community would like to see 4 new maps, than 4 remakes of the same map. (while totally respecting that the people who make the levels put in the time so make the decisions) I myself thought I achieved this, but obviously
I'm so fed up with all these DM17 remakes now...... this would have been a better way to go. I will learn from this mistake and very humbly suggest that some people out there get some more bran in their diet, or of course give it up all together, if they truly feel they have not climbed the pinnacle of pomposity adequately yet. The term "competing for highest honours" was a mistake and I have no desire to cause dissension between members of this community. I also failed to see that another member, who is never afraid to share their opinion would blow this out of all proportion. Genuinely sorry to have caused any inconvenience. My desire is to have a positive effect on the community not negative ;)

Thanks Gush and I am very pleased! while i may not alpha test, I do have a look at a lot of betas and post feedback. I always try to remember that all the editor has done for me so far is give me a headache lol. So I do try to always at least be encouraging as anything is more than I have achieved, rather than making ridiculous demands. I always wait anxiously for new maps and have no wish to make life difficult for you LD's. I am sure that all the Mappers that have made this level wished to make the best one, and I intended only really to reflect this desire to all do your best. I did phrase myself poorly. :o

Probably my favourite Longest Yard remake. The scale is finally right. Not too big like one, and not too small like another. And even though it is bigger than the small one, it plays almost as fast. Higher grav maybe, so the jumppads are faster?

The one thing I might change is the jumppads from the rocket launcher to the flak cannon. I'd have them send the player a tiny bit higher, to give a split second longer to fire rockets downward. And maybe arc the first jumppad towards the doubledamage a little higher instead of firing straight at the second pad. That's just taste though.

The one problem I've seen is bots jumping from one flak platform to the other. Half the time when they get to the armor in the middle, they somehow (and for some reason) stop dead in midair and fall straight out of the sky. I'm not sure why that would be desirable or even possible. Air control/dodging in UT3 is really weird :)

I really like this version of longest yard. Looks, Scale and gameplay are just right for UT3.

I suppose you could just dock the ship, have it refuelling or something against some out of the way mesh. Don't have a problem with the ship personally. :)

Perhaps you will want to release what you consider the final as a "release candidate" so that it may be tested by others, and if there are any more suggestions or feedback, you would still have a chance to do them.

The PS3 community actually playing our maps and mods is a pretty good way of doing so! Thanks for playing!


Hey Gush......Let me know if you get the PS3 tools working. I am at work and want to make mine available too...... I tried it late lst night and there were 3 errors (2 tied to the custom music file which I found out won't work as of now for PS3) and the other was a shader issue.

Gush I am going to have to Gush. This map is f'ing awesome. The jump pads are killer. Works great on the PS3 (US) and the picture for the map shows up in the Map menu, in addition the Recommended Players and author by line shows up too. Awesome release I guess it makes it easier to tweak and test your release when you actually own a PS3 huh.

Oh hey the music that you used in this map, that isn't custom music? I didn't think I had ever heard it before in the game and I thought that custom music/sounds weren't possible to cook over.

Grinchy idk but it think tis posible to put custom music in the map as long as you can convert it to the ATRAC3 (i think thats what its called) format that the ps3 uses.

Ahhh, that would make sense. So the editor's cooking utility can't convert the audio for you, but ideally you could convert your audio to ATRAC3 yourself and then cook it.

So we can have custom sounds in the PS3 version assuming that's true, it would just be a burden on the person who made the mod.

Yeah there is only one thing wrong with this most people are not going to spend the time to learn to convert there files to ATRAC3 just so we can have custom music. If EPIC would add a tool into the converter and add a few more features in a ps3 patch (like custom texture support) then all mods could be converted over to the ps3

Though I admit I generally don't like smaller maps, this map is pretty enjoyable to play. My only complaint is the lack of cover to hide behind and lack of variety in the weapons. Thanks for cooking it to the PS3! I think I just may keep this one.

This map is amazing! I used to play it many times in Quake 3 Arena!! it rocks!! I always wanted the good old Quake 3 maps for UT, but ive never seen any!

great job man. runs great on the ps3. the only thing I would want changed is the flak be a sr, but i understand that's where the shotgun goes on quake and the flak is the closest to it. however i think mid air combos would make for a more interesting fun map. + you get the sniper + sr combo.

That should be one google search and downloading some utility. Not too much of a pain compared to the other stuff that goes into making a map.

That said, it's super lame the PS3 requires that format for UT3 music. I had a Sony Walkman Bean for a day, the time it took me to return it after finding out the included software converted MP3s to ATRAC before loading them onto the device. Lossy to lossy conversion sucks, and ATRAC isn't very good to begin with. OF COURSE Sony would use it on the PS3.

well... i have had this map on PS3 for quite a while..... and its by far the funnest, fastest action map out of my whole collection.... i have gotten more maps since getting this one... but this one is so fun, i start the cycle out with it, even if i'm testing another map.... i love it... great job....! i think its the best map period.... great remake....

Update:
There are three things left that bother me:

1) The rings around the blue planet don't look that great. I'd remove them or even the whole planet!

2) The shining glow of the yellow planet seems to get cut off from some space textures(?). It looks kinda bad when it's moving and you can see exactly where the glowing rays get cut off. Maybe make the glow smaller?

3) MOST IMPORTANT! Please make the background rotate SLOWLY! ATM it doesn't rotate at all which is alright, but it would add a lot more dynamic if it was moving a little. Just don't make people sick by rotating too fast ;)

Other than that! Wow! Look at it! The level is so beautiful and plays very well too. Nice improvement on the bot paths!

Gush.................What a fantastic revisualisation you've done on the old Q3DM17. There are shedloads of remakes of this map, but Kudos to you, you have really made it your own and not some miserable imitation of the original. I envy you guys with the skills to build these levels, but am wearying of the constant straight copying of old levels. How I wish more people would take your lead. If any of you level builders out there are reading this ...... if you haven't got the imagination to design an original level please please please do something really original with the design of the level you are copying! Can't wait to see your next map.

Too bad :(... I was just about to suggest some minor changes... oh what the hell, I'll just post them here anyway... :P

- the blue beam that slides below the grid near the rocket launchers seems a bit misplaced... any color between red and yellow would fit better IMO.
- the portals would look alot nicer if they were vertical see-through elipses... ALOT better!
- the platform near the sniper rifle should be smaller... I remember playing the original Q3 map and thinking to myself "OMG I'm gonna fall!" all the time. Your map is already bigger by nature wich kind of takes away the feeling though not that much, but atleast this area would be critical. (I like the area near the flack cannon bigger like you made it though... only the area next to the sniper and the width of the mid-level ground next to the RL seems too big)

Other than that many congratulations! looks even better than the Yard in Q4, and ofcourse, any other Yard here for UT3 so far! :D

EDIT: forgot to mention the "raylee" (I don't know how to spell that, it's some sort of fence) next to the flack cannons should be solid wall. Why? So that the flechettes bounce back from it ;)

Found the problem. If you have the Claustrophoby map installed along with this one, it will crash if you look at the sun. You can fix this if you delete Claustrophoby's effects folder, but then Claustrophoby doesn't work.

First, I want to say that the ambient sounds seem fine to me, all the sizes of the platforms and stuff work fine for me, and all the jumppads are perfect! This is a good remake with the sun and nebula, but you could have left out the blinding (ok, not really that blinding) flash sunbeam thing. I like the nice golden brown/gold color to the whole map and interestingly blue teleporter design. The bots are good and, oh yes, the gameplay is a fun as the original Q3DM17 map and the original UT remake.

What are the other Q3DM17 remakes people were talking about?
