Sudden skill boost

Is it just me or anyone else noticed increased skill on public servers in last couple of days? I used to have quite high rank, winning most of (T)DM matches on pubs and suddenly I cannot reach a weapon without a rocket in my face :confused: and my rank went to shi**. We either got some really good players into UT3 or cheaters... what do you thnik?
ps. I play on European servers.

Well I can't speak for European servers but if you are getting rockets in your face then I don't think it's an aimbot, most likely not not cheaters however if I were you and you suspect cheaters I would quit and rejoin the server as a spectator and spectate for a while, might also give you some ideas on how to to play better.

I only noticed that I had a personal "skill" drop in the last days. :P

Public servers (at least in WAR) play the same as always, imo. Sometimes 90% of the people are guys that try to shoot their teams orb (or think it's a powerful pickup and start running to the next node with it '-_-), fire redeemers at their feet, try to heal the core... and then you pop into incredible 90 minutes matches with lots of comebacks and overtime battles. :D

Can't see any major skill changes or improvements.

i was on an IG server - haven't played IG since 2K4 -
and got blasted from half-way across the map.

got blown sideways in what seemed to be an unpredictable direction, but got hit again almost immediately?

maybe it's just better precision on the part of better gamers, but my gut response was to say "nfw" and exit the server.

but there are other possibilities, too.

as peeps "learn" the maps, they've learned to wait for spawners at the spawn points, wep pickups, health pickups, etc - this is, imho, normal for any UT fps?

people with super-uber high-performance compies are just plain seeing, moving and shooting faster?

ping / lag issues can be slowing some folks down, giving those with a better connection a bit of an edge?

when i made the mistake of checking the "leaderboard" menus' functionality i was rated somewhere near the 97xx
level - LOL - but i've always preferred team games, where i feel i can still help out or back up others on my team and
contribute something - however small - to the team effort.

maybe we should both wait for responses from other "good" gamers out there before drawing conclusions? :-)

Nope. Players on public servers still fall like flies before me*. This is on European servers too. It varies a lot by server though; there are a few servers I simply cannot play on because I feel like I'm cheating, but other servers give a real challenge. It also varies by gametype.

I haven't seen anyone obviously cheating yet (even though I saw some back in the days of the demo).

I stepped last night into a TDM and suprise: I was not the sucker at the lower end of the List, also, i jumped from Rank 5100 up to 2796 within only an Hour of playing.
And the Best: ist was good balanced, Matches most times ends up with 90 : 100 Frags or somewhat like that. That was really fun to Play, i wish for more Servers like that.
Either the Skill of the others dropped or mine was rising...

If two hammers meet, the one with the best aim (closest to the centre of the enemy) wins.

I was in the red team first, for the first 6 points.. as it was 3 vs 4 ( red had 3 members) a 4th person joined for red and i switched teams with someone and got 8 points for blue, individual skill dóes matter.

And I had 4 deaths because there were 2 other good players in that deathmatch, and when 2 good players collide, one of them will end up dead.

if it wasn't for them two i'd probably have achieved 25-0.

I'm getting far more recistance, and more often peeps with perfect aim. Thats the point where you leave the server.

Talking about sudden skill boosts... Just played this game some minutes ago. And nope, I didn't even get half of their core. ;P That was just the first round, don't have screenies of the rest, but it just got worse tbh. There is a huge lack of basic knowledge about how to play UT3 and Warfare in particular, lots of people need more guidance and instructions to learn this game.

if you really want to get better I suggest playing in ut3 tdm/ctf pugs. you should also be playing in 5v5 player servers tops when it comes to tdm/ctf.

Seriously... :)... the basic concepts really aren't that difficult to grasp so maybe, just maybe... there should be a basic tictacs guide or additional guidance / test while sitting in an electric chair ;) or something to make sure everyone knows how it is.... nobody is going to become a 1337 tactician overnight but everyone playing really needs to understand what's going on to get the most from playing :)

I played mostly WAR and VCTF during the first weeks the game was out. So i sniper/tank-whored my way up in the 6500's.
When i started to play iCTF, my rank fell to the 14000's. I know that there are players with godlike prediction and aim, but i won't believe some of the situations before we get an anti-cheating tool.

For the sudden skill boost: I noticed that some people in VCTF really know the most efficent way to bring back the flag. But only a few of them manage to pull it off every time. Example: The jumpboot-jump to the redeemer-platform on Sandstorm = I thought of that before i even saw someone use this method to get the flag, but i never figured out how to do the jump. Recently i saw a player do that jump every time successfully and i tried to do the jump from the exact same point with the boots on = FAIL. Little advantage, big difference.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Nobody has to become "leet", "pro" or whatever and lead the scoreboard all the time (lots of stuff isn't showed by score anyway). I'm talking about very basic things, such as reading and understanding the minimap, which weapons to use against vehicles, what to do with the orb etc... all stuff that could have been addressed in the game's manual. But since it isn't common anymore to explain games in their manuals, all the players have to jump in at the deep end without knowing what to do. :/

Actually I think the best use and the least used function of the orb is to repair and protect a friendly node ...

When you attack enemy core you can leave a teammate defending with the orb ... or you can defend with the orb to counter attack if you see the enemy orb carrier ... Defending with the orb also blocks enemy orb.

That's not always true. For instance, on Downtown, after you take the centre node, there is normally a period of a minute or so where the node is swarmed by the enemy before you can push them back. If you take the orb and attack during this time, there's a good chance that the enemy will recapture the central node and you'll be left too far away to get back in time before they attack your prime. It's much better to stay in the centre and protect the node, preventing it from taking damage so your team can spawn there and clear a path for you.

Another case is when you find yourself with an orb next to a node that has only just been touched. You could use the orb to build it instantly, but then you have to wait to get the orb again (if it even spawns at that node). Better to defend until the node is built by normal means.

Mind you, there are a few good players that can hit you no matter what you do... but good ways to figure out if they're cheating is if you're getting your dodge on, and at those special points where people just don't usually hit you unless they have a robotic wrist, cheaters will hit you everytime. Also, they will usually hit you dead center which will push you back farther than usual.

There aren't any slow projectiles in this game, so yes, bots can lead successfully. Although they're not perfect.

If you suspect a bot, spectate them. Don't jump to conclusions just because they hit you. They may just be skilled. BTW, most skilled players strafe and use their mouse to aim. If they're using all mouse and hitting every shot, again, either robotic wrist, or bot ;)

lol thats annoying, instead of stopping the enemy from getting their orb people go for the easy 4 and give it right back to em'.

Haven't really noticed any skillchange on the servers... just more people.
And if you happen to get killed by some lower ranked players... your own rank drops dramatically. (I play vCTF mostly).

And talking about educating players... dunno how many times I've been shot at by teammate who thinks it's bad that I carry the opponents flag... they just see the other team's color and shoot at me instead of watching my back...
