How do WS users benefit from this? Doesn't WS just allow you to have more screen realestate without having to mess with the FOV? Or, does UT3 do something crazy to FOV for WS users by default?
Finally, isn't the FOV locked for balance reasons?
it is a mutator
online, it is server side, don't care for balance.

Awesome mutator. But I'm guessing you cant use this when joining servers that don't run it.
Tonester; afaik UT3 does not have a WS mode. Meaning the aspect ratio is all wrong. Setting FOV to 120 fixes this.

This looks great.
Does it distort your FOV on the sides?
Do you get a drop in FPS as more viewable screen is rendered?

UT3 Doesn't do anything with FOV, regardless of your aspect ratio. Widescreen users generally want a wide view though, so they want a FOV higher than a 4:3 user, but UT3 doesn't allow angles above 100, which is quite low.
Finally, isn't the FOV locked for balance reasons?
People certainly make arguments about the advantages of higher FOV, but as far as I'm concerned there is no significant difference overall because you trade increased peripheral vision for accuracy.
Awesome mutator. But I'm guessing you cant use this when joining servers that don't run it.
Indeed, it's up to server admins if they want to allow this or not.
Does it distort your FOV on the sides?
Even a FOV of 90 distorts the image a bit (unless you sit really close to your monitor). If you have a widescreen monitor and don't sit to far away from it (or otherwise have a monitor that has a large apparent width) then you should be able to set FOV quite high before it begins to look too weird.
Do you get a drop in FPS as more viewable screen is rendered?
Yes. I didn't do any particular performance testing, but I seem to recall that at one point I was getting ~70fps with a FOV of 90 and ~50fps at 130.

Great mutator!! I just loaded it up onto my new server
2 Things --
1.) Would it be possible to add a variable to the mutator ini so the server can set a lower cap than 130?
2.) During my testing just now 'mutate fov' stopped working after I issued an adminchangemap command. Not sure if that's some sort of bug or what.
Anyways, thanks for this! WS users rejoice!

Depends on how close you are/how big it is. Between 108-115 will probably feel most natural.

I play at 1680 x 1050 and 110 seems right at the edge of getting the unnatural "fish eye" effect.

Cool mutator.
I play at 1680x1050 with all eye candy on, and on an Asus MW221u 22" widescreen.
I play with the FOV in the Epic settings at 100.
I crnaked the mutator up to 110 and saw the difference right away, especailly when spinning the mouse around to rotate.
I cranked it up to 130 and I got the fishbowl effect, but I like it :D
It only took a minute to get use to it.
I just tried it on the Campgrounds remake map, this is cool.

1) I'll put that on the list of features to add for the next version, when I get around to it.
2) I'll try to reproduce that.

Unfortunately, the PS3 can't access the console to change FOV, nor does it seem to support configuration GUIs for mutators, so it would be pointless to cook it at the moment.

Couldn't you try to cook it and put on a default number? Just a value of which you think widescreen users would like. At least we can use it as a mutator then, even if we cannot change something about it. I think most PS3 users would like this...

Downloading Now, Thanks!
This has always been the single issue for me every time I play UT3 as my native res is 1440x900.
I don't see how any game can call it next gen without supporting all 3 aspect ratios.

I'm afraid I haven't been able to reproduce this bug. Are there any more specific conditions that it happens under, such as offline or online, after driving a vehicle, after dying etc?

I play instant action only, so offline is where it's happening. I can also now say it's NOT just when i pause the game, but after i die it also happens, tho of course not every time. Seems like it usually happens after playing around 20 min/half hour. I'll die and i respawn into a default FOV world. Really a drag. I think it may be a conflict with another mutator since no one else mentioned it. But i use so many it would take forever to play thru a 1/2 hour at a time adding a different mut each time till it happens.
Anyone know of another FOV mut or a ini tweak?

Released version 1.1. Here's a change log:
Made MinFOV and MaxFOV configurable.
Possibly fixed one or more bugs causing FOV to revert to normal value.
Changed default value of DefaultFOV to 110 for PS3 users.
I have no idea what might have caused the FOV to reset for some of you, but I changed around some of the code, which might help.
Yes, that last one means I will be cooking a PS3 version sometime.
Mr Evil

I cooked 1.1 for PS3, which you can find in the first post. I have no way of knowing if it will actually work, so let me know if it doesn't, although please don't expect support to go much further than that.

No GUI and no console commands because neither are possible on the PS3 as far as I know. Instead, you should get a fixed FOV of 110.

Love it. UT3 on PC is getting better. They should have had this as an option in the retail version but this will do for now. I am using 1680x1050 at POV 110. I give it a 5/5.

I know this is basically done but would you be willing to make a UI for it in the mutators screen? Slider and a place to input it manually? I also like the command for it so I can change it at anytime during the game. I consider this a very good and complete mod and it is just something to think about.

I think this actually works on PS3. I keep going to the same spot on the map with and without the mutator on. I should have taken pictures because it's hard to tell if it's working or not. I can't tell if it's just in my head but it does seem to be working.

This is an awesome mutator, most likely my favorite I have now.
It really makes playing at 1920x1200 much more enjoyable, makes the gave look much better in my eyes.
Thanks for this, it's really improved UT3 for me.

I wish I paid more attention in maths lol that formula confuses the hell out of me.
So....what do I use for a resolution of 1440x900? I been using 110 and it looks fine, obviously I went the best that fits my monitor however.

Don't worry about formulas, just use whatever you think looks best.

I was just giving a formula that most people use when they have a tri-monitor setup. At those kinds of resolutions (sometimes 5040x1050 and up) you have to precisly calculate your FOV or else everything gets all screwy.
I myself just have a 20.1 inch at 1680x1050. 100 FOV works for my right now, but I might need larger when I get my own "surround gaming" setup.
Great work Mr. Evil!
This is great!
If you turn the FOV right up, on a HUGE screen (ie. 56" LCD TV) and sit kinda close, you kind of feel like you're actually there :D
(because the stretched sides, when sitting close, are slightly out of your vision anyway but you can see movement to your sides just like you can in real life - like periphial vision, plus the screen takes up your whole view so you feel totally immersed ;))
I don't do this for too long though, sitting too close can hurt your eyes after too long!

For what it's worth, I actually sat down and did some maths (scribbling in MS paint instead of using a piece of paper. hah.)
IF you accept that 90 degrees is correct for 4:3, then 16:10 should be 100 and 16:19 should be 120.

is your mutator have the same effect as if I change the FOV in-game by typing "fov 100" in the console or you have make others changes/improvements ?

It's exactly the same as if you had use the console command, except that you can of course use higher/lower values.

I know this sounds odd but can you add a screenshot function to the mutator so we cant actualy see anything above 130 degrees but instead we can get a quick panoramic vew screenie. My interest in this mutator is for screenies more than anything else.

One important note you can add is that the aspect ratio is taking into account with the mutator :D
It is not the case with the stock command ;) So 16:9 & 16:10 monitors arent supported with the defalut command.

Ok maybe I was doing something wrong but while I had this mutator installed on my clans server we would very often lose our crosshairs. Once it was removed the problem was gone. It may just be a conflict with another mutator or something I don't know but removing FreeFov did fix our crosshair problems. Has anyone else expierienced this?

No but hte problem may be due to trying to stop it being used because of cheats.
