We have released our HOLP map pack for Unreal Tournament 3:
HOLP (Hardcore Oldskool Low Poly)
http://phalanx.planetunreal.gamespy.com/hourences/compilation.jpg
# 9 Levels in total, 5 CTF and 4 DM levels.
# The focus is on great gameplay.
# Hardcore oldskool (think UT1) levels with minimum clutter, maximum gameplay, and somewhat decent visuals.
# Nearly all contributing level designers are professionally active within the games industry and all of them are European.
# Involved were Hourences, Sefyra, h0ok, Sabrewulf, Sjosz, Hazel, Slainchild, Barballs.
# Great perfomance.
# Wide range of themes and colors.
# No or limited bloom, depth of field, motion blur, normal maps, and so on.

This pack IS NOT meant to look awesome, nor to rival the graphics found in the retail UT3 levels. These levels are meant to provide pure gameplay, not to look great. We hope that our levels will bump up the popularity of the classic gamemodes DM and CTF, and get some clan play going again.

Downloading now! This thread JUST now appeared as I was refreshing the page... awesome. We needed more CTF maps BADLY and you've really filled a need here-- with some DM to boot! UT3 shipped with WAY too much emphasis on Warfare mode. I will rate the pack after I play through them.
Kinda disappointed that the maps are going to be rather plain looking, I'd prefer them to look on par with what Epic made, but I'll get over it. Thank you.

Great maps. Perhaps you could work on some slightly bigger maps for 4v4 TDM? Right now there are only about 3 maps that are playable for 4v4 TDM games :(
Thank you though, great maps.

Great to see this mappack finally released. Did some beta testing help on a couple of the maps and they are absolutely awesome. :-)

This is some really crazy stuff. Plays so incredibly well. Almost just like UT2k4 did. If people out there only knew UT3 could be played like this we would have a much larger community. This game can now be played very comfortably on a several years old computer.

Hmmmm... just got done playing the maps. My feelings are kinda mixed. It's awesome that we have NINE maps here and great that the CTF list is expanding some... but is it just me or do all the DM levels in this pack feel the same? They all have the EXACT same kind of flow and layout: many opportunities to ambush your opponent from above and tight corridor gameplay.
The CTF maps are much better, but again I'm displeased that we have a bunch of maps that look about on par with UT99. I understand that you wanted to dial down the poly count/quality, but couldn't you guys have at least made UT2004 visuals? These maps are just downright offensive to look at lol. This IS what you clearly intended and I know users who are struggling to run UT3 will really appreciate this though.
All in all, due to the number of maps and the fact that you clearly did what you set out to do, I still gave the map pack a full rating. Personally, I'd like better visuals and a more diverse set of gameplay, but good job nonetheless.

On Flustered, you get stuck on the wall going to belt from this side, great map other then that.

Just a suggestion for NOCA, it would be cool if this jumppad had just a little more boost power to it, and sent you straight up so you could pick what side to land on instead of it forcing you to one side, this would be great for fights there.

Geometrically this is indeed much like UT99, but textures are from far better quality, higher resolutions. Better lightning, normal maps, specular maps etc...
These are maps where gameplay is the focus, to achieve a good gameplay I believe you need minimal clutter & other distractions, higher fps, simple easy to navigate layouts that still provide many variaty and possiblities. Wich UT2K4 style maps would not do as effectivly.
You could just play UT99, but these still look a lot better. And better than it would if this was a pack for UT2K4.
These are the kind of maps I can play and have loads of fun, with the only frustrating thing beeing my lack of any skills, and not the map. Thi

I like this. For a second there I miss-took these for standard UT maps. Then I noticed the lighting was pretty good and thought they were UT2k4 maps. But I seriously don't mean that as a criticism. They still look good. Proves that you don't need a tonne of static meshes cluttering up your maps.
Thank you for the hard work.

OK, I'll admit I'm not a techie. I'm a truck mechanic. I tried to unzip to the path in the instructions and the folder names are not the same. I have a folder that is titled Unpublished , but , not one that is Published. Jeeezus, everything in UT3 is a pain to do. Earlier games I just dragged and dropped where things had to go. I think I'll go play UT'04.

You see that folder that was called "unpublished" well in the same bit just create a folder called "Published" then "CookedPC" then "CustomMaps" and dump the files in there and your good to go :)
BTW this is fantastic, i welcome more stuff like this, i easily sacrifice graphics for good gameplay. now if only someone remakes ctfcommand and gauntlet.

Nice work guys.
I think this is a perfect example that you can map for your preference and game style. Some people like the heavy mesh looks with tons of eye candy. Others like maps with just good game flow and minimal clutter.
This game is fantastic in the fact that nearly anyone can create an environment or game experience that reflects what they like best in the game.
I have the DM maps loaded on my Ancient Battle Grounds UT3 server if anyone want to look for them in the browser. Redirect works just fine, but remember you may need to reconnect when you get the Invalid URL:Map name.....this is normal until the next patch.

Downloading... for some reason I'm not a friend of the new stock DM and CTF maps' gameplay, so maybe servers with your maps running will attract me more - let alone the better performance. While I can run all WAR maps perfectly fine, DM maps bring my PC to its knees. Hope to see some of these online. ;)

Thanks, that worked. It just shouldn't have to be so weird to install maps and such. Old system was a lot better. Just drop the files into "maps" ,"system" , "textures", etc.
Maps play well, by the way. Maybe user maps and mods will bring this game along. Epic seems to have no interest in doing so.

These DM maps rock hard for those of us who like that old school feeling ... the maps still look way better than they ever could in UT and are on par with levels in UT04 which is still pretty damn good. The flow is great and the gameplay is damn near perfect. Thanks so much for these cool oldskool maps ... those of us who like to play UT still from time to time definitely appreciate it. :)

Hi all. I just joined, but have been haunting this place forever.
Gotta say thanks for this pack and to all who are putting out great work.
This set really rocks. I was thinking the other day how the new maps, while being stunningly gorgeous, feel cluttered and 'junky'. (I guess its part of the Necris-themed worlds) However, these maps are clean and mean.
Thanks a bunch!

I can't see any stock ut3 material that would do for any of these maps, besides they got normal maps on those materials won't benefit the FPS.

As someone with a computer that really isn't up to scratch for UT3 I really appreciate the smooth frame rates I get with these. Despite the minimalistic decoration they still look good too - still better than UT99's. Really nice work.

There should be a community of people making simple gameplay orientated maps like this. Old school only. I do like the Epic maps but I'm sure we are all agreed that there is more gameplay in these maps than in the Epic maps (I'm not hating Epic maps; some of them are very good).
The great thing is that they can be made fairly quickly in comparison to the retail maps. And if UT3 is to succeed in terms of tournaments and online competative play then it is these kind of maps that will help it along.

I have had a run through all the CTF maps. I gotta say they are great and I think most of them are suitable for iCTF play atleast.
The only gripe I have is, what is it with all these jumppads? I mean Haco is completely cluttered with them and there are many places where you imho could have used elevator instead of jumppads.
Jumppads = safe death in instagib and I understand that there have to be some, it just feels that some of the maps are kinda overdoing the jumppad concept.
Still great maps.

Ok is this it? Is there going to be more improvement to try to match UT game play?
I like it, but also would like more UT to make it complete. Referring to UT characters and weapons, because there is still a difference there that separates the two as far as matching the game play. Out side of that it is a step in that direction.

I doubt that... this is an old-school map pack for UT3, not a total conversion.
I don't mean to sound critical, but if you want the game to be exactly like the original, why don't you just play the original?

I agree with you virax, I like the maps make no mistake, the gameplay is pretty good however I'd like to see some more prahical stuff in them then they have simply because we are speaking of a game 8 years after the first ut, this however doesn't mean I prefer graphics over gameplay :p.

The way things look I’ll be 92 and still playing the original. I played UT2 and 4 for about five minutes. Graphics are nice, but some time (all the time)I just need some good old fashion butt kicking and these maps help, but as fare as I’m concern they still come up short to UT. The graphics are better in UT2 and 4, but for serious fun I looked at UT. Apparently that is more importantly, since I don’t even play the other version. UT3 is not far from joining them and I don’t think I’m the only one thinking something has to be done. I think some oldskool players see no reason to worry about updating their PC, because something is missing, but i guess you can't please everyone.
Out side of that I like UT3, but I still don’t go on-line with it and after the graphics ware off there might not be anything left in it for me. I don’t recognize these maps, but I do recognize some good old fun. But still say the cartoon characters and cartoon guns have to go to be on pare with UT game play.
I have a high end system and they all look good, play good.
The debate is always one of these:
"make it like UT99"
"make it like UT04"
"take out the polys and give us low tech"
"put in the polys and give us high tech"
If I WANTED UT99 or UT04 I'd be playing them now.
This a new game, similar but new. No one is going to be happy
with it based on there last UT game.
So, either we move on to UT3 and some new things
or move back over to something else.
These maps are great maps. They play well and give us something to chew on.
When I'm in the heat of battle I could less abouts meshes or poly count.
Do you?
For me the debate is over. The community is on the right path.

I thought these were popular maps to get the clan over. That is the only excuse I can see to pawn these maps out, but I never seen them before. We have enough DM maps, so maybe something else is missing. My pc played the default maps better, so why ant I getting hardcore?
Something is missing. I think UT3 plays more like UT, so I like it. But I miss the power the UT weapons had and also the original maps that were great for intense play. For me personally I think a copy modes can help out. I miss all the setting UT had. I just hope what ever those change are they will be in a patch for all. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t like UT3. I just like a mode to change the rocket launcher back to shoot how it use to.

Initially hesitated to download these maps; somehow I got the impression that these would be ugly as hell, "gameplay only" maps for hardcore UT players only.
But as I was getting bored, I decided to download. And wow-- these maps are amazing. They're certainly pretty enough, and the gameplay is phenomenal. These maps have a certain feel that Ut3 was lacking. They also prove that the problem with UT3 is NOT the gameplay-- the weapons, movement, etc, are all perfect. The gameplay in these great maps prove it.
Definitely recommended for everyone; Mark Rein needs to get these cooked up for ps3.
Only one bug: In ... crap, forget which map... if you go up and look at the sky, it will change to a different sky, and the world will blur... well, blur isn't the right word-- go crazy like when your computer is going bad and you move a window around like crazy... until you leave that area. Only when you just fly around, of course, as you cant normally do it.

Runs really good, but that's because it's low-poly ofcourse.
I like these kind of maps way more better then UT3's stock-maps. Now you can actually see your oponents.
Imo i found UT3's stock-maps more to show what the engine is capable of, instead of providing serious gameplay.
Nice job!

These maps are so much better looking than anything in UT99 people should be comparing the graphics with Ut2K4 and those are some damn fine graphics even today. Don't even think about trying to cook this pack without obtaining permission from the authors ... if they are not responding to the thread then there is your answer ... they just don't want any confrontations. Your other avenue is to send them each an email if they included their email addresses in the readme for each map. Other than that just let it go and be thankful for all the other FREE content you have received without having to do anything but breathe and sign up here. You have gotten some 80-90% of the available content so you should all be extremely happy and not get all bent out of shape over the other 10-20% you may not get. You are going to get even more so please enough with this behavior ... please, you've asked once and we can all read that you would like it cooked. There is no need to repeat the request on the same thread. If the author wants to do so or wants it cooked by someone they know how to go about the process and they know who to ask. Thanks for being community members PS3ers. :)
P.S. Maybe you folks don't realize this but Hourences is an industry pro who works on commercial projects so he does not have time to hang out around here and read all these post and reply. He already gave you folks Krodan ... be glad you got that ... it did not have to be cooked if he said no. Once again you are not being appreciative of what you have been given for free already. If you were you would just sit back and be patient ... you have a whole bunch of modders who know you want their content and will cook it for the PS3 without you having to ask. No need spamming threads anymore. We are aware of you folks ... you are part of the community ... now all you have to do is act like it. ;)

No one is getting bent out of shape, no one is threatening to convert the maps, people just want to enjoy more quality content by some talented artists, myself included. I wonder if your talking about a different thread? It would be helpful if you could PM me those emails, Ill try and get in contact with the artists if no one has already.
Thanks.
EDIT: Looking through your post history it would seem you have a big problem with PS3 users not contributing maps back. Give them time, console users are new to this kind of thing. Also know that the only reason im asking for you to PM me the emails is not because im lecherous I just cant seem to download the map-packs. Also I wouldn't mind learning to make maps, I bet theres a tutorial on this forum somewhere..

PS3 later. I personally have absolutely no time right now as I am moving and going to be offline for quite a while. We have nothing against PS3, we just don't find it very pressing to convert it to PS3 as the pack aims for hardcore and oldskool ut1/2 players, which are typically PC players.
You can't convert it for us as you need the source files for it to work.

For example, CTF-Ultra has some issues that could've been found before release. I'll show you some screenshots.

The first one shows that it is possible to stand in midair on that spot. An invisible volume.
The others show a different spot where you stand in midair right under a platform, so you can basically crouch under there floating in midair. On both spots people can not hit you from underneath and you can't shoot to underneath yourself. The volume is blocking that.

Anuban, honestly, the levels were meant for people playing this game to provide hardcore gameplay, making this specifically for PC players was not a consideration. FPS won't matter on PS3, not as much as on a PC, but they're still maps and they're meant to be played.
Taboen, these levels were all made in a 1 week span. I personally don't know how much testing Ultra has undergone, but I can tell you that my entry was a first pass layout, with a second pass item/weapon placement, with a first pass AI placement and it was only tested once, by a few people, separately, for placement suggestions. Not a single bug/flaw check in that one week that I built it from start to finish. Considering that levels generally take at least 2 weeks to even get to alpha, there was no time for testing. I'm honestly surprised no one has found a bug in my level yet.

^^^ More than likely not ... you have to remember the folks behind this did this in the little spare time they have away from the professional development jobs. Its one of those here it is take it as it is or leave it kind of deals ... (as Sjosz said these maps were done in one weeks time). Like with Warby's level that was released during the first few weeks ... And also they are working on HOLP2 so they will probably just make sure to watch for bugs in that build. But you could send a PM to the author of Ultra and see what happens.

Already came up several times and it has been discussed ... if you read through the thread you can see its actually going to happen at some point, according to Sjosz. So best to be patient and maybe they will release one huge HOLP pack for the PS3 which consists of both HOLP1 and 2. That would seem to me the most logical choice at this stage.
However, it may be that Hourences is done with the pack and you may not see his level on the PS3 anytime soon. You can read what he says regarding the matter on the 11th page of this thread.

Well, I must say a BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU to all the talented mappers involved in this map pack.
I enjoy all the maps for they layout, gameplay, item placement, lightning, colors and style.
I have allot of UT99/200x best maps ever of most of the authors. I am surprised that the map pack is not taking in account the U3 engine possibility at all since all the map could be released for UT99 or 200x.
I saying that because the only thing that I found rather deceiving is the low quality visual (UT1 level). If all the same maps are re-released in the future taking in account the U3 high quality visual, these maps would be must have keeper for me.
I am not a die hard pro gamer but only a casual gamer who appreciate a map by is content (visual, layout, gameplay, item placement, lightning. etc). To me, a map is a mapper work of art. So everything is important and not just this or that about the map.
So continue your good work and I hope that the HOLP2 will be pack with higher quality visual.
Sorry for my bad english typing, I'm french :-)

I gatta disagree with you on this when I first bought UT3 I had a x1300 video card and got horrible framerates on almost every map and was ready to give up on UT3. Until I found this mappack and I had pretty good fps. I played almost nothing but these maps for a few weeks.
I built a new computer about 1 1/2 months ago now I get more than acceptable fps on every level at max settings, but you know what I still play these maps every once in a while.
I think we need more low poly mods out there for new users to be able to play the game until they break down and upgrade their rigs.
TO the creators of this map pack. GREAT JOB!!! Keep up the good work!

Hi Guys! There is indeed a HOLP 2 on the way.
Yay!! :D These are without a doubt some of the best maps for UT3. Smeshes are highly overrated; oldskool, BSP based maps still provide the smoothest gameplay (and they look good doing it, too).
Btw, how about some darker maps with UT99 style lighting for the next round? It would be a nice contrast with the current fairly bright batch.

Can someone cook for PS3 plz?
The question has already been asked and answered multiple times. Try reading the thread. Basically this pack will not be cooked but individual authors may make the levels available for the PS3 at some point. For example Hazel's level DM-Subterranean has been converted and it works flawlessly. The reason for this was due to the fact that this pack is all about gameplay over graphics and far too many PS3 users simply want lots of static meshes (see the CBP3 for those kinds of levels). Maybe more of the levels will be cooked or not ... and people HAVE to get permission from the authors that don't know how to cook levels ... they cannot just cook them and publicly distribute themselves ... so just be patient and see what happens, but the next pack will definitely be for both PC and PS3.

On Barballs site it says "PS3 fans will not be disappointed as both PC and PS3 content will be released together for HOLP 2", this is only in relation to HOLP 2 but maybe we might see a double pack for the PS3. Pure speculation that last part, would be nice though.

I'm not getting upset at all. You don't see any exclamation points or yelling or foul language or funny faces in my post so I don't know where you get that impression. I am the person who has cooked the most content for the PS3 and I continue to do PS3 testing and ask authors if they are going to have PS3 versions available so you are way off base in whatever assumptions you have about me.
I was merely informing you that the issue had already been discussed some time ago and that it was not something that was likely to happen. I also pointed you in the direction of DM-Subterranean, a map featured in this pack that I tested to make sure it ran on the PS3 before release. And I did inform you that the HOLP pack 2 was definitely coming out for the PS3. I don't understand why you would get so upset with someone pointing out information to you about the issue you inquired about.
I have DM-Subterranean on my PS3 and play it often and I have PS3 versions of a couple of the other levels for my own use so I have no issues with these maps being on the PS3 at all. If the authors gave me permission I would post links to the levels I did cook for my use. Anyway good luck ... hopefully you do get all the authors to eventually do it but as I pointed out it was Jan 18th that it was said the pack would be made available for the PS3 ... 7 months later it never happened.

I happen to agree with you ... if you are successful more power to you. I'm always looking for more good CTF maps for the PS3. And I can tell you that DM-Flustered and DM-Noca work fine on the PS3. If the author gives his permission I will post the links for them. Also it looks like Hourences two CTF levels (both of which are in the MSUC) work on the PS3 so if he gives his permission I can give PS3 folks those levels as well. These are the levels I really enjoy so these are the ones I cooked for my own use. I did try to cook Grit but had some difficulties ... you'll have to ask Slainchild if he will make a PS3 version (not sure if he will though ... he also was supposed to look into making Acquisition PS3 compatible) and maybe he will oblige you.

There are some others too, like 1on1-fisted and a few more, they all came in a single download that unzipped into a bunch of maps, similiar to the CBP3v1.
I have every map except CTF-Hosh and DM-Gritt. I don't remember where I got them though.

You are correct, black star .... CTF-Hosh and DM-Gritt are not there. Like I said though theres a bunch of others not listed as part of the HOLP pack, but they came bundled together.
EDIT - I sent a PM to Barballs, waiting to hear back and if he says it's ok I will post them or he will. It's all one big download that unzips into a ton of maps.

And you know what smart guy ... he said all that on January 18th ... so you still think it is something they are working on? Why do you think Hazel released her map Subterranean separately just a couple of months ago?
I think you're reading into this a bit too much ;) Most of us have full time jobs, and do all this in our spare time. It's hard to get people organised again and put everything together for a PS3 release because they're busy with other things, and weren't at the time of development. I released Subterrane for PS3 a little while ago before moving away to start a new job. At the time there wasn't any indication as to when / if we would put all the maps together as a pack for PS3. I felt it was better to get it finished rather than wait until I have access to my PC again.

Hi all! It's has been a little while since I have been on these fourms. Please forgive the delay in getting back to you.
I have been in touch with the authors of the maps in question and we will aim to provide an official PS3 release of the pack for PS3, due to popular demand, on or even before the release of HOLP 2; which WILL most definitely have a PS3 release at same time as PC :)
Thank you all for your patience on this folks. Your wait is almost over! There is an FAQ posted on pathnode (http://www.pathnode.com/) about this.

Well I have just about all the other levels cooked already so why duplicate work ... I did offer if you read my post on the previous page? If you want the cooks I have let me know where to send them or I can just post them on filefront and give you the links. The only levels I have not cooked are Gritt, Ultra, and Hosh ... I can cook Ultra and Host but Gritt uses some custom stuff so that will need to be cooked by the author or I would need the unpublished file with the right fallback materials. People can have the rest of the pack by the end of the week or sooner.

Why do you think Hazel released her map Subterranean separately just a couple of months ago? Have you even heard of any others getting released or planning on being released since January 18th other than the one I just told you about? Also you may want to go back a bit further and see what Hourences about this same issue. Sorry but when it comes to stuff like this I tend to listen to the person with more professional experience and anyway like I said ... look at when he said this and look at what has occurred since that time. I rest my case.
Apology? ;)
Thanks for the update Hazel and barballs, you guys are gold.

No need for me to apologize at all. In fact I am the one who will be handling the PS3 cooking duties for this pack and HOLP2 ... so maybe you ought to be extending some thanks to me instead of being a smartass. Anyway I don't care ... I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it so other PS3 gamers I know can finally have it and also to close this door on this issue.

So I've been told on many many occassions. ;) Anyway its all worked out now and PS3 folks will have all the maps ... what may happen though is that both packs are released at the same time for PS3 users. We'll see ... but just so everyone knows work is going on behind the scenes to ensure you get these great maps. I just hope everyone understands the nature of these maps and we don't see posts talking about how the maps need to be UT3ified or how they lack a lot of decorations, etc. stuff like that.

Personally, I'm inspired to attempt a UT3 low-poly map myself.

Go for it man ... many of us love these kinds of map because of the awesome gamplay (and they still look good ... take Gritt for example). You and the devmods mappers should come up with your own Devmods Community Map Pack and include some cool stuff from Low poly to the usual high poly, very detailed levels. Like maybe a new version of Botanical Gardens with some of the suggestions you have received from folks. Anyway the more the merrier I think we all agree.

Well right now I've started an indoor necris map, mostly a midnight tint to it, there's not much to it right now I just started a little bit last night :p
Would be great to have these maps on PS3. I almost all maps already but it would be great to have all of them and play against others online...
