Name: DM-LiftKill (http://www.halcyonflow.com/files/DM-LiftKill.zip)
Version: 1.0
Compatibility: UT3 (PC and PS3)
Players: 6 to 8 recommended
Description:
The map is set inside a huge freight elevator shaft. One of the things I tend to dislike about Onslaught/Warfare maps and any large, outdoor map is that, in spite of presenting large open areas and long sight lines for combat, they tend to be very two-dimensional, with Z-axis play only in specific areas, usually structures.
With this map, I wanted to present that sense of open space and unrestricted visibility, but contain the action in a relatively small space and take greater advantage of vertical movement. I encouraged this by spreading the "stalled" lifts around in space so that they act as ledges and steps to carry the player around the map. This is augmented by a number of jump pads and lifts, which have been set up with lift-jumping in mind.
The uDamage at the top is accessible from the sniper rifle ledge, assuming you don't miss the jump. However, the small lift on the large platform is ideal for lift-jumping to the uDamage quickly. The larger platform lifts connecting the bottom platform to the top one are good for lift-jumping almost anywhere in the map, and are the only means to access the Redeemer (unless you're handy with rocket/hammer jumps).
Comments:
This is my fifth Unreal engine map, and I had a blast making it. I hope you enjoy it as well. All feedback is welcome, so please reply and let me know what you think. I think I'll take a stab at CTF next. By the way, if anyone is interested in adding this to their server's map rotation, please reply with the name and IP of your server so I can come by and say hello. :)
Update: The map is now available in three PS3 flavors as well.

The video does have sound, at least for me. Anyway, thanks for adding the map! If you can give me a link to it, I'll add it as a mirror in the original post.

Just played the map and love it! Great job! Only question I have is, is there any way to update the in-game screenie or game info with the number of players? I know your original post said 6-8, but it would be nice to see that in-game as well.
Great map!
I luv vertical maps for one.
My only suggestion would be to add and space a few more plaforms at a somewhat lower level down, giving it a tiered effect. You could have jump points or lifts going up or down. I would make the splash damage slight should I fall from the top to the lower one.
Nice gameplay!

I didn't play this map.
I only watched the Youtube video for about 12 seconds.
This map is awesome.
My cat farted and it smells bad.
Map is great fun! I think it was a bit too easy to fall off in a few places, but then I guess I should have been paying more attention, that's what the maps supposed to be about... :D
Can't wait to see more :)

i ve tried it now with bots. i must say that it is unstoppable action, in small space. but because the map uses Z axis and has several levels that shoots from any angle, and has alot of jump pads as well as cool elevators (sound is really awsome), it plays really crazy and it seems to be even more drive in online play. only thing i notice, is that this room, with a bio is kinda empty and large, it has a potential to include a second floor with a nice bonus for example, and bots rarely use it... maybee it's just my bots ;) by the way I must say my score for this map:
design and all that stuff looks like 8/10
gameplay feels like unstoppable drive and plays like 9.5/10
and overal score i think is 8.8 or something close to this. really cool map and musthave for a true UT3 fan !

one question...whats the deal with the alarm when u jump on that platform?
Rehevkor
12-21-2007, 09:11 AM
The Redeemer spawns on that platform. There's an alarm sound when it spawns, and an alarm and light effect when it's picked up.
By the way, thanks for the comments everyone! :D
Just downloaded this, brilliant map, well done!

You can count on it. :)
I have to say, one of the vital things I think is missing from UT3 is Z-action play (height). If you can convert Z axis play this well into a standard map, I'd consider you a god... :D
Good job with this map. We have it on our server.
I know you've released this final but I found an issue common with custom maps when you don't have all your video settings maxed out. Here are your lifts with maxed out settings:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/Mojoclr/LiftKillHigh.jpg
And here they are without maxed out settings:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/Mojoclr/LiftKillLow.jpg
There is a description of the problem and solution here: http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=589030
If you decide to make a "fixed edition" of this map I also noticed the bots getting stuck on the barrels on one of the lower platforms.

Good job on the map man. Flow is really good and the bots get around very well considering this is a level that requires great care to not fall off. Nice touch in the sniper area with the wall you can croutch behind. This map, the longest yard WITHOUT vehicles/avril, and Shrine are my favorite custom DM maps so far.
We need more CTF levels now.

The issue with textures appearing blurry (or not at all) on low settings is actually a bug (see this thread (http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=25152296)). Using bForceMipStreaming is only a band-aid fix, and is likely to cause more problems than it solves. Turning this on can result in video cards with low memory running out of space, as this forces all texture mips to load at level start, instead of streaming them as necessary. This could either cause a performance hit or missing textures during gameplay, which is worse than having some blurry textures or dynamic meshes that appear unlit.
According to that post, all you need to do to avoid this as a player is max the Texture Quality setting. The performance hit should be minor on most video cards.

Thanks for the compliments. :) I'm already working on my next map, which happens to be CTF. I'm doing basic layout and some experiments with visuals right now. Here is a little preview (the checkerboard texture is temporary):
http://www.halcyonflow.com/media/ctfpreview.jpg
I'm going with a minimum of static meshes (possibly none at all) but I don't mean to imply that it will be a UT99 style map, exactly. I'm working on a visual style based on VR environments, inspired by the look of the VR missions in Metal Gear Solid 2. I will be adding lots of visual detail through custom textures and particle systems instead of raw geometry (static meshes).
With that said, let's keep the comments here to DM-LiftKill to keep things orderly. I should have a WIP post ready for the Mod Request/Idea Sharing forum in a few days.

Maxed out settings:
Looks great!
AVG FPS = 90 or so
Dips to 50 when looking over map from sniper arena (still not as bad as Shang or Deck)
As high as 180 in enclosed areas (or enclosed viewing areas).
Very nicely done!

Enjoy the map very much...noticed the black lift thing as well and I have to say that I can't run the game with textures all the way up because my normal game only runs at about 35 fps max...then again I am playing on a laptop so I can't blame the map maker too much for that.

Rehevkor - great map, I'm a massive fan of vertical combat, gives a much greater sense of immersion within a 3d game world I feel. Well done. I'd love to see you put your obvious talents to another vertical map - I had in mind Phobos2, which to my mind is an absolute classic map, with every conceivable shapes and sizes of rooms, narrow corridors, the large central "pit", with the low gravity high areas to top it all off. How about it? I'd dearly love to see that map updated to UT3...

This is an awesome map. I was just thinking how great a map based on the Theed Power Generator area from Star Wars Episode One (http://www.starwars.jp/databank/location/image/generator_area.jpg) would be, and this map gave me the kind of gameplay I imagined for it. Great work.

Yeah I agree it's a bug that Epic will hopefully fix. BTW if you have texture quality maxed out in your video settings screen and then change DepthOfField to False in your UTEngine.ini file your texture quality then goes all the way down to 1 in the menu and this problem occurs. I like turning off the DepthOfField effect since it makes it things much more clear.

I certainly will cook this up for PS3, although I can't test it myself since I don't own one. I've had some trouble getting the PS3 cooking process to work, but I'll take another look at it when I get home. If all goes well, I should have PS3 versions of the map for each region up some time tonight.

Ok, I have the map cooked and packaged, but I need someone to test it on their PS3 for me. Once it's confirmed working I'll zip it with an updated readme and package versions for the other regions (this one is for North America).
Grab it from FileFront (http://files.filefront.com/DM+LiftKill+PS3+NAzip/;9403851;/fileinfo.html), since my hosting provider's FTP is giving me grief right now.
The file came out quite a bit smaller than the PC version... do they compress lightmaps more heavily for PS3 or something? Anyway, let me know if it works or breaks.

The only difference between a mod cooked for the EU version and a mod cooked for the NA version is the file structure - as long as the USERDATA.JAM file is in the correct folder for your version of the game, UT3 will recognize it.

Rehevkor, this map reminds of me of a old arcade shooter Gunblades. This arcade game had 2 green machine guns and you were shooting from outside a helicopter. The levels were a mine, the las vegas strip, and a part where you shoot boats over Miami.

Yeah, it's only the folders are named different where USERDATA.JAM file is placed in. The files are exactly the same (you can place a US USERDATA.JAM file and put it in EU folder and it works 100%). This has been tested.
Still, this is a great map. I love it!
