Hello everyone,
I made a remake to the UT2K4 CTF-GrendelKeep map for UT3.
I had the people over at unrealna play test for me until final release.
FYI, this is my first map ever :D.
Thanks to oMLeTTe for answering my many questions and the people at #unrealed (QNet), very helpful.

I see many mis-aligned textures and lighting could be better. It has potential.

good job... i found this online at a server earlier today; tried DESPERATLY to move the map from cache to published <no luck there> till i found unrealna...bingo, map went from beta to final. the perches about the flag are new?.... it's a nice homage to the original mapper, game play and feel are identical! i'm looking forward to some of your original designs.

I preferred it as Deathmatch. I'm with Dribler, DM version needed!

I think the structure of the map itself was well done. It was a very nice reproduction. However, I have a big gripe with this map and I hope you will not think this is overly critical because I think the map itself was well done. Yes, there are some textures that probably need to be adjusted and I think the bot-pathing is off. That's not it, though. It's the choice of textures. If you are going to remake something (especially a stock map) you should keep at least somewhat to the original atmosphere. Going from a medieval keep to a space station is a pretty big leep; big enough to suggest a change in title, maybe GrendelStation? Simply put, your remake, although mostly well done ... is not a keep. Sorry if that is too nit-picky. Otherwise I say nice job!

I had to give this one a three until all those misaligned textures are fixed sorry...map has very good potential and we are sorely in need of CTF maps at this point. Make a good map great :)

I also agree with this...We already have too many space stations anyway..and the only castles we have are oriental so differentiate from other ut3 maps and follow the original design
Im all for this map but... DM version please?

Go into the editor, delete the flags, build the map, save it as DM-Grendelkeep3 instead of CTF and (tada!) it's now a DM map.

I have added this map to my DM server,it was very simple to switch over.Waiting on permission now so I'll know if I can keep it this way or half to pull it from rotation.Don't want to step on any toes.

I'd like to see a remake of DM-DE-GrendelKeep-Wulf-FE.The added level was a blast.

If you do a DM version it would be nice to try to use similar textures from the original. I liked GrendelKeep alot, but it was a keep and not a high tech space looking arena. This looks more like CTF-GrendelStarBase.
It looks like you did a good job but because the ambiance of the original map was lost I won't play it, nor will I run it on my server.
Don't get me wrong, but when I see a make remake, I expect to go in and find something similar to what the original author intended. Deck 16 was industrial, and Deck17 followed similar suit, and the UT3 Deck is still a great remake. They all stayed within a similar scope of the original.
DM-Rankin is a great map, and someone did a 2k4 Egyptian remake and called it DM-RankinEgypt. You know what you are getting that way.
Like I said it looks like a great map, and I am sure it is great to play, but I don't think calling it GrendelKeep is appropriate or does the original author any justice.

I agree, from the screenshots it needs LOTS of work (textures, trim, lighting) tbh it lacks contrast and is also very scruffy looking at the moment. I know you don't want to hear that (who does?) but trust me, it's the truth. Tone down the textures a bit and add some contrasting textures, get some more shadows in there etc.
Good start though, it's not easy getting anything running esp in the new editor so well done on that.

you know after playing for some time I think I retract my comment about keeping it a castle...I enjoy the interesting reinterpretation...there are still some texturing issues that have been said by other users, but in general I enjoy the feel. I guess it grew on me :)

I agree it is an interesting interpretation. Just don't call it CTF-GrendelKeep. Save that name for someone who is going to actually build a map based on the original.
This uses the layout of GrendelKeep, but it is not GrendelKeep.
Human nature will dictate that if you see CTF-GrendelKeep or DM-GrendelKeep in the browser you are going to join and expect a remake of the original map. I feel level designers should at least have the respect for the original author and the original intent to leave the original names for reproductions.
I think this map would be good if named CTF-GrendelStarbase, or SpaceKeep or CTF-GrendelKeep-VI or something to at least dictate that it is not a reproduction, but an interpretation.
Interpretations and creativity are fine, just please name your levels something to reflect that interpretation.

You don't just ask SOMEONE to cook it ... if you want a PS3 version you need to ask the map author. Cooking others people content and sharing it without the permission of the mod author is very much frowned upon in this community. That said I think I remember the author just taking this down since the reception was kind of critical. But pm the author and maybe he will be willing to repost it and also let someone cook it and post it publicly for anyone with a PS3 to download.

Arent you taking this a bit to serious? Why would the author of this map (which he released half a year ago) mind if someone else cooked it for PS3? If I where him I would take it as a compliment if everyone wanted it. Isnt that the reason why he did the map in the first place?
But if your theory is correct then I guess the author of this map asked the author of the original grendelkeep for permission to make this map then?

Sorry I missed the thread.
I do not have the uncooked file for this map anymore. I made the map on my old PC when I was still in school and I never backed up those files.
That said, the map is not originally mine, and I think I remember the readme I included said anyone could do whatever they wanted to it.
As far as the download link, I suppose the file may have been automatically deleted by filefront after some weeks or so of inactivity.
Sorry to sound indifferent, and being unable to help more :) I really made the map when I was learning (and still learning) UT3Ed.

Its just the way things are done in the community as a general rule. Nothing more or less ... it has been this way a long time ... I guess you never saw this quote:
Folks,
Please stop asking over and over for mods to be cooked. Eventually that turns into trolling and we will ban you for that. One request is fine. People making mods have already gone to a great deal of trouble for the benefit of the community. Not all of those mods are going to be ideal for PS3 and it is the choice of the mod maker to decide to cook it to PS3 or not. So be polite and appreciative and maybe they'll help you. Be incessant and annoying and you're likely going to hurt the community more than you help it. We'll also kick you off this forum if you do so repeatedly.
That said though Jay said that people could do what they want so the readme has already given permission to anyone who does want to cook the level. So have it.

 No one is saying shut up at all. Its great you like the game so much you want more content on the PS3 side ... that is cool and I like seeing more people into this game ... we need that. I am merely just letting you know some things so down the road you already know what to expect going in. Believe me I want as much great content for the PS3 as it can stand ... its why I test still for people and why I cook stuff I really like (or try to) and then offer it to the author so he can make it available for everyone. I guess I just like things to follow protocol but I still want to see good stuff on the PS3.

There's also a CE version with file name (CTF-GrendelKeep3_CE.rar) that I downloaded from somewhere on March 1, 2010 (downloaded DM CE version on the same day).
Oh, here they are (CTF version):

OK, so I finally checked out the CE version of CTF and DM for the versions in this thread and also the DM U3 version that's also been floating around. First, I'll give brief comments on the U3 version, then the other two in this thread.:)
DM-Grendelkeep-U3 >> no preview shot, looks like original UT2004 CTF version (played original again before trying these other three) but in DM form, sky is kinda lame and bots are good, the rest of it is fairly close to the original if the original was DM.
CTF-GrendelKeep3_CE >> looks different from the original with rain and starry sky (where's rain coming from?), gold colors, decorative ceilings and obvious purple glow from Udamage. The bots are still good and possibly better than in UT2004. I like the dragon-type lights/ceiling lamps, but I never did like the stairs winding in the other direction if on way to enemy base in any version of this map.:) I did notice that you can get stuck on the wall rounding the corner to the bases (maybe this was not the case in the non-CE version).
DM-GrendelKeep3_CE >> this is like half of the CTF CE version but seems to still be on smaller scale somehow than the U3 version mentioned above. The bots seem just as good as the U3 version. If you want to play a crazy fast DM version of this map, then this is the one.
