View Full Version : Im working on CTF-Face, and Id like some feedback..

Well guys, this is the first map ive ever done, but I really wanted it to be remade.
Its going well so far, but I was wondering if people thought I should stick religously to the old version, or adjust things to suit the new game.
Firstly, I was thinking about replacing the weapons at the rear of the fortress with WeaponLockers so that respawning players can get involved quickly and help with the pace of the level.
I was also considering replacing the mid-ground with proper terrain rather than the old asteroid and space theme, but I found it difficult to create terrain which was similar to the old version, and it was impossible to make a hole in the middle.
This is how its looking so far, I've gone with an oriental theme, two opposing temples.

So that you know, the internal layout is practically identical. The teleports lead to the same weapons/pickups and storeys as they used to and running around it feels very much like the old map.

As long as the layout is the same I'm ok with it . If it's not in space it should at least have some other sort of barriers/death void to take place. Maybe water. Or lava or something. :shrug:
I think a Necris version of Face would be.. f***ing awesome!

Hey lookin good! I think as long as they're done well, variations of face are a good thing. This looks like it's going to be fun. Lighting seems a little bright in places atm though. Liking the colour. I can appreciate that making a map look professional with the Asian theme can be quite hard, im making the setting of the Miyazaki film Spirited Away, which means making the whole bathhouse haha. Gunna take some time to finish as im going to try and get visual quality as near as shangri la as possible. Gd effort so far though.

That shot was taken with the dynamic lighting, without it being built.. they are nothing like that bright normally.
Im very new to mapping, so its all a learning process. Quite enjoying it, the terrain aspect is giving me the most headache, dont wanna resort to just making it outta geometry.

Facing worls will be remade officially by epic, so if you ultimately try to replicate the look, no one will play it. I think its a smart choice to go with a theme so dynamically different from the original.
Keep with the asian theme. Do not make it ancient Asian architecture on an asteroid though. If you do, anything you've done with the theme would be a waste, as it would make less sense than the original did.
Maybe a hill with two ponds(waterfalls at peaks..ie, near the keg) seperating the two bases?
Look at DM-gateway for some inspiration.
The terrain is the easiest part out of everything, in my opinion. Theres a tutorial by Hourences, which I had no problem following.

Yeah im following that tutorial now, but the problem that im havin is this is the first "additive" world ive ever made, and I dont know what im supposed to do to close it off... do I put it all in a big box?

just place the space sphere from UN-Sky package in your map, resize it to fit (use it by putting your towers inside the hollow of the sphere, then you wont get "HOM" (Hall of Mirrors).

I am a typical Face fanatic, but I think this is turning out well, good luck.
As others have mentioned, the lighting is a bit bright, and though I would prefer the weapon locations to all be the same. It is your map and any idea you have is worth beta testing.

Yeah, that's the beauty of additive worlds. :)
It was confusing for me at first (still is a little), but makes using terrain much, much easier.

wait wait wait. Its good that you are redoing face in a unique way! Face classic is to be made by epic so this new oriental look will be great for a user remake. The thing is, the asteroide was part of faces core atmosphere and gameplay. unfortunately it isn't going to work with orientalness eh?
What i suggest is having these bases on a high mountain top, like dm-peak from UT1. This way players can still fall off from the main arena and die like face classic, but you can still do away with the asteroid idea. This will also add a different atmosphere, i am sure it would be much more surreal and interesting then a normal landscape valley setup with a lake and a few trees. Having it at twilight on a high mountain top would be 1337!
Over all the structure is looking great! I can't see how it looks anything like faces original layout, but pushing that aside it is a fine job. Keep going!

Only one thing : Red light near 2nd floor creatures looks weird.

You may have some competition soon. But I think i go for "Classic" or just another map. That japanese style tower does not feel exactly like classic faces.

I think it matters alot. I didnt like the egypt-theme from UT2004 and Im not the fan of the asian setting either. Face is a space map, thats the way I personly want a remake.

the egypt version wasnt face, it was face 3 practically a complete different map with the same name really. With this map its the ground leading up to each bases is probably the most important part

Anyway to try and be on topic, Nawrot i like your asian themed style of face, the more maps with different gameplay the better, 20 people are bound to remake classic face including Epic.
EDIT: This map is not a face remake, its of the setting of an anime film called Spirited Away.

However it isn't quite what we know as Face, thus I would suggest giving it slightly different name. For one, because it was said Face is gonna be remade by Epic and would be coming in a Bonuspack. And maybe then still secondly because someone else might wanna try make a really true remake to the old Face.
Good effort tho, keep it up!

You can set the map on top of a high peak (with a volcanic pit in the middle), so that it retains the 'you fall off you die' part of face, but doesn't make the
map lose its theme.

an idea for other potential face mappers is perhaps a "Facing Glaciers"? hehe
have glaciers on either side of the map with a face-like tower of ice/rock and water underneath...
or maybe "Facing Forests"?
think the tops of the trees of Serenity and maybe having a metal bridge or so
or "Facing Necris"
having necris-like towers with the "vertebre" tenticles as the bridge
just some thoughts for mappers :)

Actually, the Asian theme is fine. My understanding though is that an "official" version of FACE will be coming with one of the Bonus Packs.

Yes but its very probably that they do some changes to layout. On other hand CTF-Hydro is almost exact port.
And yes "CTF-Face" should be left for official remake, We can always name them as "CTF-Face-something".

I'll download this tonight and give it a go.
I like the idea of having water/waterfalls replace the space part (where you fall and die).
I feel a strong part of the original face was the sky scenery/planets so I think you should find a way to make it really impressive.
