Remake of the classic Quake map, The Longest Yard.
Recommended players: 4-6
Comments:
This is a remake of my favourite map from the old Quake Arena. Some of you may remember it as Q3DM17. I've always wanted to play it with revamped graphics, so I finally got off my lazy ass and did it. Hope you enjoy it, I certainly do! Keep an eye out for that Damage Amplifier ( Quad Damage :rolleyes: ).
As before, preview and music work fine.
Update: Archive is now a zip. If you have the previous 1.0 version of the map, simply replace all files with the new ones. When in game, you'll know you have the updated map if it says 4-6 players recommended in the menu.
Installation:
Just extract the DM-LongestYard.zip archive to your My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Published\CookedPC\CustomMaps\ folder. If it doesn't exist, create it. The game menu will now see the map.

Wow! I had totally forgotten about this, havent played that in years. The only thing I remember about Q3 is loading map Q3DM17 every time I started the game. Great remake, I played and it was very action packed. It's a blast! I registered here just to reply to this post :)

I just think that the players scale are too large for the map..
maybe if you increase the map scale to players look like more "smaller" in the map could remember MORE LIKE the original DM17!!
after all, once again, REALY GOOD JOB!! Even better than original, in my opinion.

Always one of my fav space maps. Great for air rox :D.

Excellent! I'm glad everyone likes this map. I'll be making more in the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.
Now to address some of the crits.
1. It's smaller than the original. - It's cramped.
Yes it is. This is my personal twist into the map's design, as I thought the original was a bit too large for a 2-4 arena. This way the Flak and Rocket Launcher are much more "in your face", and you really start to value those jump-pads.
2. Why are some maps so dark?
It's because it's outer space. I didn't make this realistic, because that would mean one dim source of light, and the rest black. But I didn't make it as clear and shiny as in Q3 either. Try setting the Unreal brightness a little higher if it's hard to see what's going on.
3. Textures are blurring out on lower detail settings.
I will fix this and the Bowl map aswell, very very soon, and I'll update them as versions 1.1 for each map. Basically I need to select all static meshes and check "bForceMipStreaming", right? Will do.
Keep the comments coming, and post your own screenshots if you have them. Would make this thread more alive. Besides, we're treading on classic ground, here. Whoever designed Q3DM17 was a genius. :)
I'd also love to see this on a server. So please let me know if you put it or find it online, so that I can join in on the mayhem.

There is a bug in this map. Kind of "invisible wall", where your bullets get stuck, but you can walk/jump through it. It's just under the 50a, looking from the central jumppad, on the right side of the bridge. Try shooting flak there from both sides (from jumppad to sniper and from central jumppad), and you'll find it. It's really annoying to have your rockets to explode in mid air due to invisible walls..

Could you post a screenshot of the exact spot? Anyway, I think it's from the volume lights. I forgot to tell them not to block weapons. I will fix this along with the Force Mip Streaming. Look forward to version 1.1. Thanks for the heads up on the bug.

Hey Shakma, I really really don't feel like resizing the map anymore. It would upset all the jump settings and lights, and basically it's me being lazy. I suck. :o

just got done playing TDM with some bots and I gotta say this is a helluva map remake! Although the scale could be upped as others have said but it's not a real biggy to me. One thing I did happen to notice is that it seemed like one of the jump platforms just had me bouncing up and down smacking my head on the underside of the platform above it. For the life of me I can't remember where it was specifically. Anyhoo great job once again, this one brings back memories for sure.

Well done, its a nice remake. However i wont be as positive as the other people posting here, i know you said you wanted it to be more crampt, but i think its just too small - especially around the rocket launcher i just take one step and im in the void. Also too blurry for my taste, that could have been toned down. Otherwise fun...maby i put afew too many bots on i dunno.

I played this map a lot in Quake 4, it's very awesome!

I was sure that someone gonna make one of the best maps ever also in ut3 in a short period of time and here it is:D
The design is great no doubt. You have a style man)
Otherwise as mentioned by the majority the scale is too small, i am not saying that because gameplay suck now, but it was never meant to play like this in original(q3,q4), we need its large size for sure!
Offcourse its all up to you and i am ready to say 100 times thank you for giving us a chance to play at least any of q3dm17 remake. Also gived it 5/5 for the way it looks and for the idea in general. But still if you want your map to be close to a perfection you should keep that in mind!:rolleyes:

Hey man, i tried it with bots ... plays just AWESOME! I love how you can alt-fire from Flack all over the place.. even funner than quake.
Gave me lotsa mixed feelings too, its like cheating on your girl .. and she is standing in the same room watching you. (I used to be hardcore Quaker) .. But great map

First of all, thanks everyone for playing the map and for your comments ( some of which are quite funny, like Dr3thepooner's - I know how you feel, same here ). Really makes me want to draw a sketch and start my next map. ( hope to have same success as this one, but it's not a remake; we'll see, maybe now since you know me :) ). But first things first! I hope today I'll get into the editor and fix this baby up, for version 1.1. And since it's in such popular demand, I'll increase the size for the rocket launcher platforms, and place the flak ( shotgun :p ) platforms more apart from eachother so that you can't double jump on the Damage Amplifier jumppad.
Hope to see this map online after the update, when it's 100% enjoyable for all, so let me know.
Edit: Borgschulze: That's the final map in Quake 3, The End of You, where you duel against Xaero, but I never really liked it much. Too campy.

Nice remake but the scaling is off as others have said..
Size it up by about 30% (perhaps more) and it's perfect.

This map is waaaay too small. I really like the layout, but as it is now it is unplayable. It reminds me of DM-Plunge (which I reeeeeeeeeeally like!)
I hope you can enlarge this map so I can install this map again.

Woooooooow, I just downloaded the updated map. What an unbelievable difference!!!! This map is crazy fun now!!!
With the new scale it means you can actually move around without continuously falling off the edge. Also, the barriers/railings near the weapon pickups are really useful.
It's amazing to see how a small (pun intended!) change can make such a big difference.

Map is 10x as fun now, though it was still amazingly fun before.
Sweet, the map plays a lot better now :)
Found a small AI issue: one of the bots kept jumping on the jumppad for the keg, even though the keg hadn't respawned yet.

I noticed that, too. But nothing I can do there, the fact is that I placed a navigation point beneath the keg, so that the jumppad will know where to send you. And bots are attracted to nav points like flies to crap, so that explains it.
Not a big deal anyway in online play :)
Good job in all. The map is insanely fun.

Hm, The scale feels comfortable in the 1.1 revision, but this could have gone through a little more polish. I see sloppy texture alignment, flickering overlapped surfaces (a really bad one on the lower long catwalk), cheap looking edge trim... and theres a small yet annoying volume blocking you on the inner side of the upper platforms.

I don't have UnrealEd, nor UT3 on my PC since it won't run it. But I will be buying UT3 for PS3 when it is released Dec 11th. I'm not sure if your current map files will be a direct install for the PS3 version. From what I understand, everything is the same except file formats, so UnreadEd should have an option to export the map in PS3 format.
If you could get back to me on this I would greatly appreciate it, as well as hundreds of thousands of PS3 gamers! If possible to do, I will test it right away and give immediate feedback.

Alopex: Could you please post a screenshot of the place where there's the flickering? As for the volume blocking you, I've paced over every platform and couldn't find it. Anyone else have this problem?
ViolatoR: Sorry, I've just checked the Editor and I can only save as ut3 format. From what I've read around, this should work for the PS3, though I have no idea how you're going to get all three files ( the map itself, the ini file and a little package ) installed.

Thanks for the quick reply. As soon as I get my hands on the PS3 game the day it comes out, I will check to see how maps are installed, and see if your map files will work. You need all three files in the archive to be there in the folder I pointed out. The map should appear at the bottom of the map list in the menu, as it is a custom map and not considered in alphabetical order.

Ok I managed to get this done, now my problem is that your map does not show up in the vote menu, I added the map in de mapcycle (ini) tho.
You can join our server by looking in the serverbrowser ingame, look at servers that start with an O (orbserver its called)

Found it on a server today, not orbserver ( that one was empty ), but it wouldn't connect to it.

Yes I made a thread in the server administration forum section, but further investigation led me to believe that this is a bug. What we need is an EPIC made userinterface to setup servers via webadmin and I red that after the first official patch this will get attention from the devs.

Then it wouldn't be the remake of DM17 anymore. Try using the Weapon Replacement mutator if you feel like you want a weapon replaced with another. You could, for instance, replace the Sniper with the Shock Rifle, and then you'd get Shock Combos going on.

Hi Freespace.
I stumbled across this issue10 seconds into playing the map. There is definately a point on the upper ledges where you cannot walk off, and to be fair it is annoying. To me, it spoils what is an otherwise very good remake.
Im sure it would be appreciated if you could find & fix the problem, and release an updated version. :)

I got pushed back and killed by being pinned at that exact spot, It is definitely an issue that can randomly restrict freedom and is a long time pet peeve of mine in custom maps, that and the flickering overlapped surfaces.
Your remake here is /so/ close to being my first UT3 'keeper' map.

Most likely a stupid question for you guys, but when installing this map, i found the folders fine, but it says exstract the archive, does it mean every file in the .zip?

Hey I noticed after playing this map that you get stuck when on the top level by flak and you are trying to walk down over the edge towards the jump pad below. This is pretty unacceptable, please fix.

Nice map man, I used to love this map!
The only thing I could say in the way of feedback/critisism is some of the floor textures don't line up and the star skybox is a little basic but as regards gameplay, it ROCKS!

Hey guys. Thanks again for the rain of comments! I'm gonna see about that ledge from the high platforms, where so many of you get stuck. The flickering on the pad toward the sniper will be fixed.
There's nothing I can do about those guys jumping for the Keg o' Health, though. It's about the nav-points, so sorry. Just think of them as being eager to get to the power-up; It's also a good point to shoot missiles from.
Regarding the skybox, I kept it simple cause in Quake 3 we didn't even have stars, and I didn't want to detract from that too much with stuff life nebulae and planets.
I'm still not seeing this on any servers. Shame, people. :p :)

Are you sure you cant do anything about the bots and the jump for the keg? Is it possible to create some script that states they should only go that route if the keg is actually there? There must be something that can be done.
Is it possible to have the 50 shield appear without its base? It looks a wee bit daft after you've just made that jump to see the empty base floating in mid air. Ok, everything else floats, but I feel it would look better without the floating base!
Could you tweak it to make the long jump to the sniper possible without taking damage? I hate hearing the 'damage sound' every time I make it - always makes me wonder if I've been hit by somebody else or not.
And I think it could do with a slight increase in size - not much, but I think it's a wee bit on the cramped side for any more than 2 players.

Sorry, my script knowledge in Unreal is very limited, so far. As for the 50 shield, I don't think it's possible, same goes for the Keg o' Health. It really annoys me too to see them floating there, but that's it. It's a Q3 map, running under UT3 basically.
I can make the sniper jump be without damage by decreasing the miliseconds it takes to jump to it, but in Q3 you took damage for those jumps, so I'm keeping it loyal to that. I've increased the map size for the update, and I think it's just right. You should have seen the 1.0 version. That's the way I liked it, but people wanted more space. :D I play this map with 10 bots, and I find it just right. Currently I'm beating the hell out of them on Adept difficulty ( 10-15 frags lead ), but I'm afraid to try Masterful. Need to gather some guts.

Then it wouldn't be the remake of DM17 anymore. Try using the Weapon Replacement mutator if you feel like you want a weapon replaced with another. You could, for instance, replace the Sniper with the Shock Rifle, and then you'd get Shock Combos going on.

Yes, I've noticed the flickering, but I'm not finding any troubles walking/jumping off the platforms at the exact spot you posted. If it's not too much of a bother to you, walk off another meter to the left or right. :)
ill give it a shot, never played the quake version, so I have been comparing this map to the Longeryard-SE from Unreal 1 (as have most of my clanmates). Sorry for the confusion, I was just used to a diff version that had asmd up top... and diff weapon placement...

Oh awesome! I have so many memories of playing this great map in college with my dorm buddies, its going to be awesome to re-visit those times with UT3. You're sure this will work with the PS3 version though? I sure hope so..

Surely you can place items without pick-up bases? I saw numerous UT2k4 maps that had items without bases, even baseless items floating or sitting loosely, propped against walls... i can't imagine it being hard to place the floating items in UT3 without them.
It's not a deal-breaking problem or anything, just please see if you can work out how to do so before updating next. I can't imagine it'd hurt you as a mapper to figure such out either. ;)

A few more little things, knowing you do intend to work on the map further... can you please try to adjust the misaligned textures and do something with the trim?
The trim you've added to the edges of most surfaces looks rather junky and haphazard, with many roughly overlapping pieces, many flickering. The sniper platform does not have trim around its back area and actually looks alot sharper, less 'detailed' sure, but comes across a bit better, polished trim or none would look better imo. I know some people are fanatical about having extraneous amounts of frills and trim, but sometimes less is more.
Sorry if my posts are reaching rigmarole status, it's just this map has always been a favourite of mine, in any game it's ported to so I'm hyper critical about quality of remakes, and you've done a lot right with it. I think the current scale fits the more close quarters UT3 style, and I like your texture, geometric & lighting choices as well as the minimalist skybox.

Really great indeed, that applies both both visual and gameplay! The stars at the background could be removed though..
As for gameplay - it's as good as in Q3, I only think you'd better replace the sniper rifle with asmd. Also there's a small problem with bots getting on the central jumppad and keeping jumping there, but they never live long enough to make this annoying ;) Everything else is good.

Map doesn't work for PS3, sorry.
Broose, the only weapons in the map are Sniper, Flak and Rocket. Why you're getting a Biorifle error is beyond me.

The map is great, expect the annoying thing with the "**** you! you're not supposed to walk off the platform from THIS SPOT" - thing!
And... it's space! Add some stars, a rotating earth, things and stuff that makes you sick and dizzy,when looking at it...

This map needs hype. With the weapon replacement mutator to put a sr instead of the sniper it rawks, lots of fun 1on1 or 2on2. GJ. :)

This is the sweetest q3dm17 clone I've seen so far, well done. Part from the sticky-mesh trim on the flak platforms, and too little air control in the jump pads, it's close to flawless. =)

You don't remember Q3DM6? That map was remade as Campgrounds for 2k4 and I'm really hoping someone does the same for UT3 :)

Can you not Proscribe the path from the jump pad to the nav point by the keg 'o health? I think the bots not picking up the keg is better than infinite jumping. You could also try forcing a path from the jumppad to the health, but I doubt you could do that.

Not to sound like a broken record, but PLEASE cook this for PS3. When I first heard that people could create custom maps for UT3, a remake of this (and other Q3A maps) was the first thing I thought about. Damn nice looking map man, if you can get us a PS3 version, it would be greatly appreciated :)
