How do mutators work

Hi.
Im new to unreal and was wondering if somebody could explain to me how mutators work.
Does it give whoever has the mutator installed an advantage, or do they have to join certain servers.
If i join a server with mutators will they be enabled for me also, or do i have to dload em?
How does it all work.

Mutators apply little modifications to the game, that are only in-use affects.
most mutators will not give a single person an advantage over others, unless it were intended to do so.
If you join a server using custom mutators, your computer should download it automatically so it will work. About them working for you after you join a server, I think they can.. Not really sure since I tend to stick to pure servers.

To play with a certain mutator you must join a server which is playing with that mutator at the time. You can't go into a game as a client and set which mutators to use - you can only do that on instant action and if you're hosting a game.

ok, thanks peeps, thats cleared it up for me, i was just worried about people getting an unfair advantage in games.
