Iv given up, the game just wont run, iv gone through the forums over and over again and tried everything, i even Formated and removed hardware i didnt need so i was starting off clean and got the same error. This isnt just a bug, this is a serious problem, now im out 60 bucks and have lost all respect in the UT series. Iv gone through checks for my hardware, and software, i cant find a reason for it. I would love any support or ideas if anyone can help me out, Its really sad to see a game get problems like not running. Im sure they could of not saw this coming, but if iv learned something from being one of the first xbox360 buyers, you need to really test stuff these days. So anyway, the problem is that of this:
-click icon
-splash screen opens (Ut loading screen)
-ether closes out entirely, no reason, or goes to black screen
-if black screen, closes out 2 seconds later
-no error 70 percent of the time
I checked the logs, it fails and the error says directinput 8 and problems with that in the name
Iv tried countless times to reach midway via phone, left 2 messages. Havent seen a bit of tech help, its like midway does not exist. It took 3 days to even get the email from the forums so i could post this.
-A very annoyed user
Specs:

Quite a kick for the one game iv looked foward to for two years...

First thing to do is disable PEG link on your motherboard, it overclocks your GPU and can cause instability. Also test some older drivers to see if you can gain any different behavior from trying different drivers - if anything changes it points at a driver fault.
Is your OS setup standard? Having OS components of it distributed over several drives, logical or physical, can cause issues. Make sure user directories, such as user account directories, are all on the OS drive.
From what I've seen UT likes everything pretty standard, and you might try installing it on your OS drive and partition.
You might wanna look at disabling any RAID if you have it enabled as well.
Failing on startup is also often copy protection bugging and causing the game to crash. This can happen from finding blacklisted software resident in memory and can also happen when something stuffs up while checking the game disk (DVD drive firmware updates can help with this and things i cant mention).
There are other things to try, like updating the BIOS on your GPU and checking that its at stock speeds.
Check that your Motherboard also hasnt had a driver update than whats on the CD that came with it and also check to see if new bios to flash is out.
Seeing you have formatted and the issue is still around, its most likely something to do with your firmware and bios settings.

I have the same problem: click game icon, splash screen, then "poof!" it's gone. Haven't gone to the extent have with re-formatting drives, but running from "autoplay" on the disc and also running from the .exe file in the Unreal Tournament 3 folder, but no luck.
I'm feeling pretty blue here...
(PS where do you find the logs you are referring to?)

I had the SAME problem with an 8800 GTS and it would hardlock my comp. I had the newest driver as well. Then I downloaded the 169 Beta Driver for Crysis, based on someone suggesting it to me-- it worked! Have you tried that?
On a sidenote, how are you supposed to recover from a crash that COMPLETELY locks up your comp? That's what UT3 was doing to me before I downloaded the 169 beta. It would black screen after the splash and I couldn't do ANYTHING. No ctrl+ALT+DEL, no ALT+tab, my power button didn't even do anything. Only way to get out of it was to cut the power.
Isn't doing that really bad? Is there a better way to recover?

UT3 crashed for me at various places. Never could play a single second of the game.
Finally replaced my Nvidia 163.75 drivers with the 169.09 beta drivers, and it runs now. Looks blurry and low-res, but I haven't played around with the settings yet.

I have the same problem.
From what i can guess it is a Either a Faulty Exe or the install is not working like it should
Could some one tell me what is in the My games UT3 folder.
I have a theory.
I think the problem is that the Install do not install a file that is important.

try changing the ram voltage to 1.75, this fixed it for me along with updating sound drivers.
Voltages vary. Not all dimms run at the same voltage. can find voltage specifications from your rams manufacturer website. Ive had the black screen problem on two machines. Both were different. My amd 64 4000, 7800gtx machine was going black screen (monitor was going into standby mode) right after the intel ad, would have to manually reset the machine. After changing bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False to True, downloading and installing the latest AMD processor driver, and Nvidia Beta driver 169.04 (now 169.09) My problems went away. Havnt had a black screen scince. My other machine, C2D E6850 8800GTX machine would play for awhile before going to black screen. (monitor was going into standby also) But scince Ive installed the 169.04/169.09 drivers I havent had it happen once. If youve updated your drivers after u launched ut for the first time, Id recomend deleting the UT3 folder in the Games\Mydocuments folder and let the inis reset. Sounds like there could be a problem with the games auto hardware detect and its configuring the games system files in such a way its causing problems.
cybnetic
11-28-2007, 08:52 AM
that is a waaay piss poor fix, no one should have to change hardware features to get something to run. this is not right. dont rely on that fix. this needs to be fixed aka per game.

Sorry i left out the OS, windows xp SP2 with all updated drivers for everything, im a computer tech in town, so i know i built her right.
Try minimal hardware and software. Reset your bios to optimal defaults, all stock clocks. Remove all cards except the video card. Use the onboard sound and network. Then try a clean minimal install with only a single ATA drive cabled up and a single DVD. Get your SP2 from MS update and install the latest nforce and nvidia beta drivers from the website only, nothing from any driver CD that would need uninstalled or upgraded. This is as minimal as posible. No web surfing.
Aside, does your board use an SLI select card? Check it's set at single?

Cybnetic, I will try to help you, but I need more info from you.
1) What did you do to get the game to install on your PC? I saw in the past you got an error during the install, but now apparently you've been able to get it installed. I presume you copied the contents of the DVD to the hard drive and did the install that way? Or perhaps had an ISO of your DVD burned to your hard drive, and did the install that way?
2) Have you tried editing any configuration files in Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config?
3) Have you tried any of these type fixes:
UTEngine.ini
[Engine.ISVHacks]
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
[Engine.ISVHacks]
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True
Have you disabled OpenAL in the game? I can't figure out what the INI setting is for it, yet, but if you were ever able to get into the UI of the game, you could enable/disable it.
What specific motherboard are you using? What brand and model?
Are you using a sound card? If so, what brand and model?
Have you tried running a memory scan of your PC, with something like Memtest86?
I realize you're an experienced technician/etc but I've read all your posts and you a) don't give that much information to us, and b) you're extremely obnoxious to people who are trying to help you, so I've until now held off trying to help you, in favor of attempting to help others who are less vindictive to others.
Like you, I don't believe it's so much a video driver issue, but it's still possible it's a driver issue of some kind. I'll give you an example that just occured to me last night. I assembled a PC for my wife, using a D-Link wi-fi card that I've used in her last PC. That old motherboard went out so I got her a new one, and reassembled it all. But this time on a clean install the PC kept locking up after the Windows Updates, driver updates etc. Turns out the latest D-Link drivers caused the PC to lock up when it got into Windows, trying to activate the card. Whereas that same driver revision, on the old motherboard, did not cause such an issue. So I rolled back to a previous one. Basically, some drivers might work in some situations, but not work in others. Also, other types of driver issues can cause a lockup than video card issues. I know you know this, but from my standpoint, I can't tell much about what's going on with you other than you have a new, high-end system and UT3 didn't install right initially, maybe not eventually, and is locking up when you start it. From a troubleshooting standpoint that's not much to go on. If one of your clients told you as much as you've told us, that's not enough to fix the problem.
Personally I'm of the belief the game probably didn't install right, from what I've read of your posts. But there are some other things you can try.
Delete the config folder entirely, and let UT3 rebuild it.
Try to reinstall via an alternate method, say burning an ISO of the DVD, then installing from that ISO.
Try older (or at least different) versions of drivers to your sound card/onboard sound.
cybnetic

game has never installed. just quits after splash screen comes up as i have said earlier.
there are no errors of any kind , nothing Everything is up to date, this is a clean machine. just built it. I have not tuned or overclocked anything, been through all the usual stuff that may cause an issue.
No sound card at this point yet, ECS MB with onboard sound. Brand new. Everything on this unit brand new.
the splash disappears after hitting the language button. a splash comes up for two seconds and then goes away. nothing after that.
already tried burning to another cd, install from hdd, etc etc nothing. same thing

did you try booting your PC into safe mode and try installing the game like that? Not that you should have to, but it may work.
Also you may want to try downloading the latest MS installer/cleaner from microsoft, that may help as well. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

It's cool man. I know it's gotta be eating at you. Let us know if you find something that works for you. :)
Okay I reread your last post. I am going with the presumption of:
a) the game has not installed correctly on your PC.
What others have done is try a different DVD-ROM drive. Do you have any extra lying around you could try?
Another thing, the burning the DVD image to an ISO on your hard drive, and installing from that. Or just copying the contents of the DVD onto the hard drive (I have not tried that so I do not know that works). Also you could go to a friend's house, make a copy of that DVD onto a different DVD-R, and try the install from that one. It may be the quality of the DVD used for the install is causing problems with your DVD reader.

cybnetic: Glad you have provided more information. Now I have a guess at a solution. Might be a bad guess, but it should help you to rule something out or at least get the game installed.
Since you have a micro atx board with onboard ATI video, try removing your 8600GT and the Nvidia drivers and switch back to the onboard ATI graphics and install its drivers. Then try to install the game. And if you are lucky, when you reinstall the card and turn off your ATI graphics in the bios, maybe the game will run since it is already installed.
If it doesn't install with the onboard graphics, then at least you can guess it is not (a) a conflict with the nvidia drivers you have been using and (b) your video card. To rule those two out could help a lot in finding a solution.

This might sound daft, but I could not get UT3 to install on a Near virgin machine (1 week old). I kept getting the Error 1719 during the install, and that was it. Never had that before, and I suspect the game had something to do with that, because nothing else would install (Error 1719, I might be running in safe mode "Yeah right!!")
Point is I put the Windows disk in and performed a Repair. Most stuff is unaffected by this, except certain components such as IE7 got changed to IE6, that kinda stuff.
At last I could install the game.
Dumb thing was, a day later, IE6 32bit became corrupt and I had to install IE7.
It just shows that it's not viruses or adware that f**ks PC's up, it's Microsoft no able to write OS's.

um no. actually Microsoft has written a very stable os in Windows XP now that Service pack 2 is out. all OS usually have problems when they start out and Vista is most likely the current gen of Windows Millenium and will be forgotten.
The Game not running is Epics Fault because they made the game optimal on Vista and didnt really care about the errors that may come to XP users. to make the game properly install: Go to Your "My Documents" folder--- Open your "My Games" folder---- open the UTEngine.ini file with wordpad or notepad.
once inside, find and change the following variables to the values shown below.
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True
These 3 lines (either alone or in a combonation of sorts) are all that stop your game from running properly.

True, this is a first for me on XP too. but my brother has had this on a few more occasions.
I think Microsoft did replace the more common BSOD's in Win98 with the wonderful Error box that pops up and asks to report to Microsoft, or to bog off, so it balances out.

Just curious. Did you try my suggestion about removing your nvidia card and drivers and installing the drivers for and using your onboard Radeon Xpress 1250 for installation? Then installing your nvidia card again to play the game? Might get you past the install bug that is in your way.
BTW: you've probably double checked this, but make certain you have disabled your onboard video in the bios when using the geforce card. If you haven't, that could be the conflict which is preventing installation.

It would be one thing if I could play the game but it crashed occasionally. The game crashes immediately after all the intro logos play, and the editor crashes as soon as it starts.
Is there actually any tech support for this game or do we have to just sit here and complain to ourselves until the issue resolves itself?

Good luck, then. Sounds like you've eliminated that it might be a conflict specific to video cards and their drivers with the game by testing with both ATI and Nvidia, that you are convinced 100% that everything is installed correctly in terms of OS and board drivers, that the bios is properly properly updated and configured, and that you have tested both stable and beta vid card and board drivers. You've tested with different media and different CD/DVD roms. There doesn't seem to be anything left.
Personally, if this happened to me, I would guess it to be a board/chipset issue/conflict that might or might not be the fault of UT3. Since ECS is a lesser known, budget motherboard company and this is a budget micro ATX platform to begin with, and because the 690G is built on ATI technology which has been plagued with problems in the past, I'd switch out the mobo for a non micro ATX, nForce-based chipset board. If I really wanted to play the game, I just wouldn't have confidence that some patch from Epic would magically fix this issue.
Sorry. I know it's not much help to say "give up" on your current platform. But you could invest hours and hours more trying different fixes and reading the forums in hope. Or you could order a new board and see what happens.

THIS game needs to work with this setup. I have not found any other problems with any other games of this caliber so far on the this unit. I have run several newer games on this and they work, I am ready to ship this cd back for refund.

You should probably send it back and let them know it does not install, and inform them it's a known issue. Show them this thread if you have to. Managers often have access to a PC where they can web browse. utforums.epicgames.com is all you need to remember, you know the rest of the way here. :)

I don't get it, why doesn't EPIC care? You would think that since 50% of their customers can't do anything or crash every 20 minutes they would be working 24/7 for a fix.
Patch 1 doesn't fix anything.

cybnetic: I noticed the line "3 500 gig hdd 2 sata 1 usb ext" in your sig.
I wonder if you've tried installing this game to a drive other than "C:"
My flat-mate found that the demo simply does not work if you attempt to place it anywhere but on drive C:\ - it crashes randomly (and brings down his fully up-to-date system with it.) After placing it on C:\ it would actually get past the splash screen. I don't know if the full game still has that (glaring) defect.
And on another note, I had to play with all those .ini file Booleans until the maps all worked on my own system. This game could benefit from significantly more QA (especially under WinXP, the world's most common gaming OS).

On my Geforce 7900xt (256MB), 2GB, core 2 duo system, I had to change:
C:\Documents and Settings\me\My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config\UTEngine.ini
entry bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True (the default is False)
The error log line (from UTGame\Logs) I was trying to work around is:
Direct3DDevice->CreateTexture( sizeX, sizeY, NumMips, GetD3DTextureUsageFlags(Flags), (D3DFORMAT)GPixelFormats[Format].PlatformFormat, GetD3DTexturePool(Flags), Texture2D->GetInitReference(), NULL ) failed at .\Src\D3D9Texture.cpp:86 with error D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE, SizeX=512, SizeY=512, Format=DXT1=D3DFMT_DXT1, NumMips=10, Flags=, TexMemoryAvailable=0MB

Just posting this ... maybe it will help someone...
I hope this helps at least some of you...
The moral of the story is this: if you can get your direct3D tests in dxdiag to work, you can probably run UT3.
Please bear in mind that I am running an ATI x1650 pro... see my sig for other details;
That being said, some of you nvidia folks may want to try this too...
I tried dxdiag... when I tested direct3D all the tests failed... then I googled the error codes and someone said that their ATI catalylst driver 7.9 and above messing things up...and by going back to 7.8 it worked.
So I uninstalled my catalyst drivers (I had previously tried 7.11 and 7.9...epic recommends 7.9...) ran driver cleaner, and went back to 7.8... Then I tried the dxdiag again and direct3d worked fine. Now the game starts and runs just fine!!
Current UTEngine.ini settings:
[Engine.ISVHacks]
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=True
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=False
Curiously, even with Catalyst 7.9 Battlefield 2 ran just fine even though there was something wrong with my direct3D according to dxdiag...
P.S. I also did some other stuff which I read about involving direct3D, like disabling terminal services... I wouldn't recommend doing that, it made my res settings go bugnuts for awhile... I don't know why... I must just have the most obscure hardware setup in the world...
Anyway... I would like to know what caused this problem in the first place, but I am satisfied for now... at least since the game works...

ALL DRIVERS AND UPGRADES ARE DONE:
installing UT cd :
initial splash comes up , click on language button, second splash and box pops up for two seconds and then goes away.... then nothing. does this every time. no errors, no burbs, nothing. another disk will do the same thing.
this is a new machine built two months ago. I have several new games on it that work fine as stated above i believe. everything else works fine also.

So we're talking about the installer?
After you select the language button, you get a new splash (looks like the cover of the box) and a little box in the lower right? Then they both vanish after 2 seconds?
Do you see a thermometer bar on the little window in the lower right? Does the bar move?

Maybe u tried this already but ...Hold Power button for 5 seconds=hard reset.

um no. actually Microsoft has written a very stable os in Windows XP now that Service pack 2 is out. all OS usually have problems when they start out and Vista is most likely the current gen of Windows Millenium and will be forgotten.
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True
These 3 lines (either alone or in a combonation of sorts) are all that stop your game from running properly.
Thanks heaps!
for anyone that was having the problem of the game crashing during the launch with the "windows encountered an error" problem this will fix it (it did for me anyway)
however the game crashed not too soon after about 20 seconds into the first cinematic. however this was before i edited the pump config so i'll try that and keep you posted.

ok i've got the game running now but for some reason (probably something to do with the utengine.ini) everything ingame is blurry and pixalated. the only thing that does look sharp and decent is the crosshair.
has anyone else had this problem and know how to resolve it?
i'll keep looking around for some info.
any help would be great thanks.

this was a thread for non functioning installs. anyone fix that yet
I have read this thread entirely and tried various suggestions people have made.
But I am someone who has played UT for years and played league, I am also not someone who is very techie orientated on a PC so most of the stuff discussed I can try but in reality, like millions of people who will have purchased this what I need is a game that loads and works - I absolutely have to object to paying for a game that I have now spent days on trying to install.
It is quite simply an awful way to launch a game.
The answer I need is either a patch that will fix the issue or you can send me a new CD that will work.

Well some of us now have come to the end. We just cant install it until something is fixed. But I will patiently wait until our UT guys can come up with something. I know it pisses most people off like me in the beginning but things will work out eventually. I have several other games at this point I can play until this is fixed. So.....
Here we wait ;)

I presume you've upped the in-game resolution to your monitor's native resolution. The fuzzy-looking feel to the game is intentional. Also there is no way to enable anti-aliasing from within the game, but even if you could you'd need SLI'd 800GT's to support it.

I seriously doubt that the game was meant to look how it does on my machine.
i'll try and get a screenshot later but to give you an idea how it looks, it's like the game is 10 years old as far as detail goes
