View Full Version : Single Player Games/Settings Won't Save.

SO here's the quick run down:
1. I installed the game.
2. I ran the executable.
3. I input my cd-key.
4. I logged into my account (same one as the demo).
5. My settings weren't the same, which bothered me but i reset them all.
6. Play single player for about 2 hours, beat about 6 levels and then leave the game.
7. Come back, start playing the game again and it asks me to input my cdkey (like it didnt remember it). I do this and start the game again.
8. Go into settings and they didn't save.
9. Go to play the campaign mode and it didn't save it.
10. I look in the "my documents/my games" and there isn't a UT3 folder there. Should there be? How do i get it if it isnt.
My computer runs the game fine, but the "My Documents" drive is on a different hard drive then the UT3 game. Cause a problem? If so, MAJOR oversight.
Needless to say I'm frustrated because this same crap happened with the demo with not saving settings. Any solution?
I don't want to have to put my cd-key/video settings/input settings and start single player over and over.
Thanks.

I had this same problem with the demo. Does your user name have any weird characters in it that windows wouldn't like? These characters are: \ | > < / : * "
Make a different profile without the offending character and it should work.

try re-installing.
I'm not reinstalling this game, it simply takes to long.
I tried that with the beta demo 4 times and it wouldn't place the folder in my documents, assuming they didn't change anything (and i'm sure they didn't) it would be a large waste of time.
And to the other poster:
My account is normal; "beckizzle". Nothing special.

I know its been stated somewhere that you can use your demo account for the full version but err Id rather not do that, better to create a new account for the full version. If games have taught us anything, online play is usually linked between login information and cd key use. The two go hand in hand, it is quite possible that you demo account might circumvent something on the full version just guessing!!

Thats fine and dandy, but that doesn't matter as long as my account info isn't getting saved..

It might work after you submit your email, etc. Didn't ask me again after I did that.

I don't care how dumb it is, it worked for me. Merely relaying the info.
My documents folder is on a secondary drive too btw but I set up a new account for the full game.

Your account etc doesn't have a bearing on the files in your my documents folder, after a install without running the game once there should be files there, if there aren't something went wrong during install, re-installing might be a pain but it's the only option I can see.

Someone on another thread solved the same documents issue by putting it back to it's original location. The thread should still be on the first few pages here.

Thats the worst solution i've heard of. I for one cannot do that, so thats a major problem.

I know the account in general doesn't, but i tried a reinstall just for you and to no avail.
I am 95%positive its because the my documents is on a different hard drive.

UPDATE: I even tried reinstalled a 3rd time, this time making a random "My Documents" folder on the normal HDD (even though there isnt anythign there relating to my doc's) and it didn't work again.

Don't you have a default My Documents folder under your Windows user profile folder?

I moved "My Documents" to my E: HDD (the root of the hard drive). This means that the whole HDD acts as "My Documents". When i click "My Documents" in start menu --> Takes me to E:
I installed UT3 to the D: Drive.
Windows is on the C: Drive (where the standard "My Documents" folder WAS.
Because i moved it, the location was would normally be is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[name]\My Documents\
now it is
E:\
Back in C:, it is just now:
C:\Documents and Settings\[name]\
No folder called My Documents because i moved it.
Make sense? I tried adding that folder myself to no avail.

"My documents" may be a little missleading. I moved mine to another drive and renamend it. Windows still calls it "My documents", though the folder itself has another name. It's only important that you have the correct path mapped for your windows.
You click right on your "my documents" shortcut, either on the desktop or in the start-menu. Then you enter the path to your folder there.
Inside the folder that is designated there as YOUR "my documents" folder, there is anotehr folder with "my games". That is the location the setup is safed.
I honestly doubt though, that this will help you. It seems all according threads were deleted, but campaigns and settings in single-player will not be safed, whatever you do - it's a bug. You can save your settings after you have logged in online, but even then it's pure luck if you will be able to change and save your offline-preferences.

When i moved "my documents" i did it via right clicking my documents in start menu and clicking the move button.
"My documents" is E:\ (the drive)
So my music is E:\My Music
ect.

Side note:
What amazes me is that NO OTHER GAME HAS EVER EVER EVER EVER had a problem with this.
Crysis? Installed the files to my documents just fine.

note: if you have the "my games/unreal tournament 3 demo" in "my documents" i made a copy and named it "unreal tournament 3", put it in the same location (my games\..) and then started the game. clicked yes to remake the ini's, entered my info and it seemed to have saved it.
no more inputting cd key, no more resetting video controls..lets see if single player works.
keep you updated.

I have had the same issues and found a solution
- I am running windows xp pro sp2 and I bought the game off direct2drive
- I have a 320GB and 500GB drive with a total of four partitions
40GB (c:) windows xp
60GB (d:) windows vista
120GB (e:) games
500GB (g:) my documents (in windows it is set to the root folder)
So I realized that I couldn't save my settings and tried just about everything. In the end the only thing that worked was changing the location of my documents. Which in the long term was not an option as far as I was concerned. But in the short term it seemed to do the trick.
I created a my documents folder on (g:) and changed windows to default my docments folder to it. It wont let you move the files into a folder on itself, but I didnt want it to move my files anyways.
I than ran Unreal Tournament 3 and input the serial number (I hate how it doesn't automatically advance to the next field), logged in and changed my display and control settings. After which I exited the game.
I checked the my documents folder and sure enough a new folder had been created. my games\unreal tournament 3\ was created in my documents folder. I than changed windows to default my documents back to the root of (g:) and let windows move the new files and folders over.
It has worked perfectly since then, seems like a bit of bad coding. If your having a similiar problem, try this before trying anything else. I wasted hours modifying ini files, unistalling\reinstalling and trying new accounts settings.

Haven't you guys tried adding -nohomedir to your ut3.exe ?
It will make UT3 save your inis and everything in the UT3 installation folder.

Hey all
I can also confirm this bug. I have My Documents set to the d: drive and when I fired the game up this morning my settings hadn't saved. I'm not going to change my system settings because of a silly design oversight, so I hope this gets fixed ASAP.
Edit: read the rest of the thread :) The -nohomedir suffix works, but I agree with okkervil in that I'd rather have the files in their proper place.
Thanks Enthil'Zha!

This bug was in the demo and it's still present in the final version as it seems.
Let's pray for a patch. Can't believe the internal testers missed this one.

I have an even stranger version of the same problem. All my settings are saved but my cd-key isn't so I have to redigit it rather often (but not all the times..).

I get a somewhat similar problem, but not as dramatic. I do have the UT3 folder, but everytime I load the game, it forgets my settings and camapign, in fact my whole profile resets everytime I load the game anew.
I have found a solution for this though, so if it helps anyone: I made a backup of the save file after shutting down the game (after I played campaign and thus modified my profile), which is located in "my documents/my games/ut3/ut3game/savedata"
It's not the exact location, but it's something like that. So I made a backup and everytime I start ut3 again, before loggin in your profile (so first screen of ut3) I go back to windows, put backed up savefile in the folder again (where the savefile has been reset again) and then maximize ut3 again and log in, then everything is just fine.
I do that everytime I play the game until patch or anything else fixes this problem.

I just hope that they will fix it very soon. The game is great but all these saving problems are detract from the fun.

not only the saving problems, but all the framerate drops and freezes as well, they are the major issues. They've solved a lot of minor stuff with the first patch, I hope the second patch will be as useful :)

I agree. I'm just a little worried because my problem is so weird (but, of course, it's not a show stopper). Why can't the game remember my cd-key?? It should not be too difficult...

SOLUTION:
Add "-nohomedir" to your ut3.exe
MY SOLUTION:
I put "-nohomedir" to my Shortcut to ut3.exe, so in my shortcut "Target" in Properties looks like this... "E:\Program Files\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries\UT3.exe" -nohomedir
This should work for everyone having the problem.

Does not work for me, I am still unable to restart a campagn where I left off, I have to start over from the begining every time.

I'm getting the same problem here too, not saving any of my setting and not saving any campaign progress at all, have tried adding nohomedir but that hasn't worked. Loving the game but it's not that fun having to go all through the campaign over and over again lol. A fix would be nice :)
