View Full Version : Can't Play Campaign

Every time I go to start a campaign the game completely freezes during the cinematic. It plays for about 5 seconds then locks up and if I'm lucky I can alt tab out and end task. This is most disappointing Epic, why would you release a broken and unfinished game?

From the looks of it, this game was made on the console - it's obvious. I assume EPIC made this game out of the console, port it to the PC for early release, and then sell console version of UT3 on later date, hoping that none of us would know about this misdirected situation.
I am kinda disappointed in this game, the graphic looks like it came from GOW and it's crap. The game is wayyyyyyyyy too bright - I assume EPIC use bloom and HDR to cover the AA issue. If that's true then EPIC is hiring retarded interns to make this game.
Meh, I wasted my 50 bucks on this crappy game.

This should fix it.
Open the UTEngine.ini (My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config) and change PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=False to PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True

I am running Windows XP Pro, have an 8800 GTS (OCd), an Intel Core 2 Duo 6700, etc etc. It's a nice computer. My problem seems to be that I can play multiplayer games, but not multiplayer campaign. Any idea why this might be happening?

What do you mean? You cannot start a multiplayer campaign or you cannot connect to a multiplayer campaign? Or do you get an error?

Did the trick. Appreciate the help. And as another user said I am also rather dissapointed with the graphics in this game. I mean the explosions and blood look like something from the Super Nintendo. The characters look pretty good up close, but the backgrounds, floors and buildings look pretty crappy for a "next gen" game. I think you're right that it was made for the consule and ported to the computer. Us PC gamers are screwed if this is the waive of the future. Man and I have been waiting over a year for this game. :( Well I'm optimistic, perhaps the gameplay will win me over.

Well sweetness. Thanks for the info and thanks to those that followed up to say it worked. I'm at work now but was experiencing the same problem, though I would just hit ESC as the cinematics started and it would skip them.
Now, to those that are saying this is a port from a console........ are you guys daft? Show me a console that has a level editor. The thing you guys are completely missing about this game: Customizability. I've read a few threads now that are complaining about the windows not being what they were with ut2k4. Darn. Make your own! You CAN and that is and always has been the point of the Unreal Engine. Nothing has changed about that... I'm glad I payed my money for this game.
Now I can't wait to get out of work so I can view those damned cut-scenes. Thanks, Gorge.

seems to have worked for me, but whenever a new cutscene loads, it begins to play and then crashes. the video stutters, and it windows out of full screen, but the audio still continues. when i restart, the cutscene then plays just fine... not a huge deal for me i just restart ut3 after a crash, and it seems fine until the next cutscene. it'd really make the game unplayable if it didnt autosave, and i've decided that this is a "feature" that epic added to keep us from spending hours on end plugged into the campaign. must. goto. bed.

When I changed this and tried to save it, I got an error message: Cannot create E:\Unreal Tournament 3\Engine\Config\BaseEngine.ini file. Make sure the path and filename are correct.

The only thing I really see as console like is the interface...same thing they did with 2003 (from an amazingly in depth interface to a very dumbed down interface) but fixed it so I can only hope they make it a little more configurable and I saw a thread of "fixes" that at least address the browser.
As for graphics, they aren't "locked" and generated across the board for every platform. Much like games that have been released on PS2 & PS3 or Xbox & Xbox 360. You don't see the same graphics do you? They optimize based on the platform.
I'm happy with the graphics for the most part... My only thing is they sometimes seem almost over textured, hard to put my finger on but regardless I think they're extremely well done.
Thanks for the setting info... Found it through another thread regarding cutscene audio not playing.

I'm also having this problem, I'll try the tweak.
Sadly, UT is supposed to be a PC franchise, but the quality of the game just doesn't seem to be there, and this is definitely Epic's worst released game to date for PC. It's pretty obvious the game wasn't lead on PC, just look at the menu system, I still can't believe Epic let this out the door. Anyway, it's good to see that they said it's being fixed, but why was this even an issue? In the past, this would never have happened. UT2K4 must have sold well, I can't seem to believe Epic was disappointed with sales, but I guess they were, and maybe that's their reason for pimping to the consoles this gen.
Gorge rocks, I think he kicked my tail in on Gears PC the other day, not sure if that was you or not but someone had a very similar name.

Get use to it... it's not going to change with any company and will move even more in that direction. Companies are out to make money and a lot more people are more willing to drop $400 for a gaming system that they need to know nothing other than inserting a DVD than build a PC for at least 2x-3x as much for quality hardware that will hold up to games like this (and that's building themselves or a friend).
I have a 360 and it's fun for friend gaming w/stuff like Guitar Hero or sports games but I'm PC to the core and UT99 (bought it on the day it was released with my dial-up for a while) is still my favorite online game to date.
I've complained about this stance since 2003 was released (and a lot of other titles) but it's not going to change (for Epic or any other company) and, while not complacent, it's a moot point anymore.
BTW, the fix didn't work for my audio on cutscenes!

The vets all know to use search, and then once they fix their problem they go right back to the game, instead of posting.
/goes to play UT3 campaign with watchable cutscenes.

ALL the Unreal games can be tweaked with the INI files. i remember for UT2004, if i wanted the "ultra" details in it, i had to do it in the INI file cos it didn't had the option in-game.
but now i have to turn off some features (some are useless, really, and just add more FPS). i still would like to turn on a nice map textures feature, but that would influence the FPS greatly most of the time, and FPS drops are really bad in a game like UT3 where it's fast-paced.
