Made a new version, based on the feedback.

The size is 80% of the old one. I added some kind of light to the walls, so you can actually see where the light is coming from. I've set Bloom to 0.3. Removed the flak + link. Removed the pole in the middle. And added some spawns at the sides in middle.
Please have a look and tell me :)

a bit of adice, encode your package into the map by naming it the same name as your map. even if you rename your map after that the package will auto rename as welll

You mean, changing the name Andaction-XIV-materials.upk to Andaction-XIV-beta.upk ?

well no now u gotta erase the imported mats
then reinport and apply them
but when it asks you the first time to name the package you name it exactly
ctf-Andaction-XIV-beta or whatever the exact name of the map is

There's no need to add every frellin' weapon in the game in a single map, especially if the map is as open as this one which kind of makes the short-ranged weapons like flak-cannon more than a litlle useless to say the least.
Some of the best maps only featured two or three weapons at best.
The layout of this map is a little too basic. It's one step up from "CTF-subtracted cube". It really needs more cover and a some chance to spawn without getting shot at from the opposite end of the level.

ye i no wot u mean. but for instagib a bit smaller i think would be better. I dunno if u played Andaction on UT99 it was prolly less than half the size of that one, but it was too small imo, so i think somethin in between would be just perfect.

id say the biggest issue, is texture sizing, and do some post processing. No DOF, But a little light bloom, only a tad. would be kool

For a CTF-andAction remake, this is way too big. It needs to be at least half the size, and please get rid of the weapon pickups. CTF-andAction is meant to be played with Enforcers and Pistons only. I'd also recommend using some wood textures to regain that classic "512 subtracted cube with a column in the middle using Koos Galleon textures" mystique.

Guys, I'm very new to mapping. I asked how to put in lantarns, I just don't know how!! :(
I will make it smaller then, and I will keep the flak and link.
Karmatized, what is post processing? What is DOF, what is bloom? I know they are settings to change of video settings but what does that have to with my map? Where can I change it? :)

taboen look though the static mesh's in the browser for a landtern, dof and bloom can be set via the world info of the map or by making a post processing zone.
oh and ionno i kinda like the sizing

I'd enjoy a wel designed 'pretty' map more but the simple maps always get very populair and I must say mostly arent that bad to play, andaction/w00t may stay! >:)

Agreed. I dont care what this map is a remake of, it just looks a subtraction with some weapons. What the hell?
Why not try and put some effort into a map before you release it instead of just trying to be the first out with a map? Go and learn how to use the editor and at least create something that looks/plays half as good as the retail maps. Kina makes me angry people just release this stuff.
At least try and stretch yourself a little, add some corridoors and extra rooms with a sniping view over a main room or something, then work from there.

Just put alot more effort into it, look at some of the retail maps, and try to make a unique design, multiple pathways to the flag, lots of detail, well placed lighting.

*eh* you are kidding, aren't you ?
I know it's not easy to make a map, but damn ... this kind of stuff should not be made public as if it is a good map.
I really, really would suggest that you take a step back and add more than a little something with substance to the map.
For example :
= a few walls and barriers that protect the spawnpoints, because there's nothing worse than getting shot at every single time you respawn
= a few alternate routes, so the flag-carrier has a chance of making it back alive and the defenders can get in front of the enemy as he escapes
= there is a definite lack of height, so platforms could make it more interesting
At its current state it screams : I know how to start the editor and what the basic commands are to get a 'functional' map for CTF, but I don't care about learning how to create a decent map.
Anyone can create a map like this within minutes after learning the editor.
If you want to be remembered as such then go ahead, but I really wish you wanted to make a decent start with mapping.
There's nothing wrong with a few subtracted cubes as a startingpoint, but please make an effort to make it at least look like it is an arena somewhere in the UT-universe before you make it final.
Last, but not least :
= just because you are 'porting' an existing map to the new game that doesn't mean you can't change any part of its layout.
= make sure the original mapper gave permission to port his map (not that I can imagine anyone wanting to be associated with something like this)

jafo theres no reason to protect against spawn kill since you automaticly have 3 secs of spawn protection

It still sucks ... and it may be necessary if a mutator changes how the spawn-protection works.
Besides ... all that does is force your attacker to spam the spawn for a few seconds longer.

I cant do that to an andaction, andaction is about having 1 room 2 flags best spammer wins.
I am learning how to make a map, and I when I know enough I will make a map, for now I'm doing my own Andaction. I have learned how to use lights, add a static mesh and how to add weapons. And because there are servers out there running an andaction once in a while it's worth posting here. I too sometimes just want pure spam and join an andaction on a server.

Well your not wasting my time, as i'm choosing to look at this thread - but i just think you need to go and learn the editor before you release a map. Even my first map had several rooms and corridoors with defence points, stairs etc...i made more than a box and you can too by following tutorials. Find some good tutorials there are plenty out there.
When you say 'how could i make it better', i think the response 'anything' is appropriate, as the only way you could somehow remove anything is to remove that room...which from the screenshot seems to BE the map. Its hard also for other people to give comments/advice on...nothing.
When i criticise its not a personal attack its because you should try harder, but well done in the first place for going and starting to map. Just try and work your way up to something small, with afew different rooms, afew meshes maby thats nicely lit. Lighting is very important, once you get your gameplay layout final of course. Just play around a bit and see what you can come up with.

i think u can improve it a little, maybe addin some stuff to make it prettier. Or changin the theme, this one has a medieval theme, u can do futuristic one, or some other.

yeah, its a box with a pole, of some kind in the middle, and is usually great fun
there are no rooms or stairs in andaction, it's all about who can cover their players better

Its not "bad" its how andaction was and that was a lot of fun..(in insta anyway...cant imagine that map being played in nw O.o)
@ OP removing the pole = bad imo...and as someone else mentioned try adding a different theme to it, add some stuff to the walls etc...

Its not "bad" its how andaction was ...
DM-Morbias, CTF-Face and CTF-Joust were pretty simple maps as well, but they still managed to look good despite the fact that they were just a step above 'subtracted cube'.
Even the UT-version shows quite a bit more talent compared to what was posted in this thread.

'not so hard' is an understatement.
The only way to foul up a map like this is to not have a consistent theme/look.
And that is exactly what the author of this version has managed to do.
I really didn't know it was possible ...
I can only give one suggestion to such a person :
= stop mapping, unless you really plan to improve on the visuals in this map
If you are so impatient that you you want to release any map that looks like this then there is no way that you will ever complete/finish a decent map in your lifetime. It doesn't have to be comparable to one of Angelhearts' maps, but that doesn't mean it can't look good.

Your in the wrong forum then, first try Level Editing, Moddring & Skinning if all you want to do is learn the editor and then when your confident set a bout creating a beta level. I could probabaly whip up a level like yours in 1 minute!

Taboen are you the original maker of CTF-andaction? If not I would suggest NOT naming this map as a sequel to it without having permission first. Also, where's the pole that goes in the middle ? ..
