yet another request for any indication of when we might see a mac-port of UT3. december? january? christmas 2009?
or should i just buy the retail version when it's released and whack Linux on mah mac?
edit for mac-haters: please keep your opinions on the mac vs windows debate to yourselves, or start your own "i hate mac's" thread and vent your spleens there. i feel i am asking a fair question.

can't you just dual boot XP on the mac these days? Just a thought.
Seriously though, haven't heard anything on the mac port. I wouldn't be suprised if it came after or around the 360 port.

yar, i could bootcamp XP. but if i'm going down that road, i'd rather use a Linux install.
which is kind of my whole point: the guts of OSX (Darwin) is a damn Linux kernal in and of itself. shouldn't be that hard to port.....
ViperGrendal

That's true, cause there's supposed to be a linux port soon.
As far as the kernel thing, you could say XP is a NT kernel, but the two OS's are night and day. I have no idea how heavily Apple has modified OSX from it's linux leanings.

the Darwin core is a linux distro. fully open-source and everyfing.
it's the extra GUI sheisse (cocoa, carbon, quicktime etc) stacked on top thats probably where the differences lie.

Doubt it.
'Where for art thou' - Where are you. Shakespeare used the line in that context.

Wherefore art thou Romeo? means "Why are you Romeo?" i.e. if you weren't you, my family wouldn't hate you and you could bone me all night long.

You are incorrect sir. Note that the next line is "renounce thy name" not "why are you hiding" or whatever.

One's only a little less tedious.
BTW is it confirmed that Icculus is doing the port again or not? I'm kind of out of touch with the Mac scene at this point -- most of my remaining Mac buddies have gone console. :(
You better too. Mac is not for games... Its for... erm... WORK. ROFL.
Nice deal i see. Buy a Mac which costs twice as new gaming PC just "cos its MAC"(To use it as typewriter and media center) and buy PS3 or XBox with it to play. Neat... And yes. You gotta need big TV for console too.
Or you could always dual boot to some pirated s***t or use BootCrap to play games that 3 years old. Like HL2. I don't think that BC supports DX10 or PhysX.
No offense, Mac users.

just to nitpick further....
i said Where For, NOT wherefore.
but i s'pose "thou" is the appropriate word not thy.
meh, you lot know what i mean, so i've successfully "communicated".:D
BTW is it confirmed that Icculus is doing the port again or not?
afaik: yes, icculus is the name that keeps getting bandied about.
i'd just like some indication of when it might actually arrive...... i'll prolly need more RAM too....
I'm kind of out of touch with the Mac scene at this point -- most of my remaining Mac buddies have gone console. :(
hehe, at least theres one thing most gamers would agree on, regardless of mac/windows affiliation: keyboard+mouse > console....

IIRC, OSX was based off of FreeBSD, not Linux. Linus Torvald was very critical of the kernal of the OSX kernal at one time, though I think that was a kneejerk reaction on his part.
BTW, I'm an Apple-certified technician, and I used OSX server as my OS for a Mac server, as the chief Mac Tech for a large university. We were given it for free by Apple for testing, and it was pretty stable. I literally never had to reboot it due to a technical problem. :)

Aye. If we're to be exact about the kernel, OSX uses the XNU kernel, which is the Mach Microkernel with a BSD subsystem bolted on (so that it's no longer a microkernel). And of course the userland is also BSD. (freeBSD as you state IIRC).
I'm personally looking forward to the Linux port, but OSX port would be nice as well. Come on Ryan!

The Mac version will come along as soon as the people who port the Mac version have finished porting it. Which Mac are you going to run UT3 on?

Wow you're going to try playing UT3 with a G5 iMac? Good luck I guess. My iMac G5 had to be replaced because of IBM's crappy processors. I hope the game is ported well enough for your old ATI card.
I use a Core 2 Duo iMac for work and stuff but would never bother trying UT3 on it...

yea, I would think the G5 2Ghz would run it O.K. with modest settings... that is, as long as Ryan is doing a Universal Binary... something else we don't know about the secret double secret port to Mac.
Donovan - stoked for the PCers tomorrow!... but will be waiting (not so) patiently for the Mac port.

Actually, "Wherefore art thou" is asking who someone is, not where they are. Like saying "Where do you stand?" means how do you feel about something, not where you actually stand.

Unfortunately for you, the Hyundai Accent seems to do what the so-called Ferrari can't. Run UT3. Some people care about the apps they use or want to use, others are fanatical about the OS.
You made your choice and when you did that you knew that you would have trouble with some applications and games, so stop the whining and just wait. Epic is being good by even releasing a version. They don't have to.
Also, to the OP, I wonder if they're developing just a Intel version or a universal binary. If it's a Intel version then it won't run on your G5.

huh?
i know they don't "have" too. but you seem not to understand. by releasing mac versions of all previous UT titles, epic has built themselves up quite a strong following in the mac community. hell, they went to the effort of doing UT99 for classic OS (and that must have been a PITA to port).
some windoze morons laugh as they tell me "you can't play counterstrike on a mac"
to which i answer: Who cares, i can play UT. why would i want to play CS?

all it needs is an OS-X version. that'll run, regardless of if i use a PPC or an x86 based mac.

No it won't. An Intel only binary will not run on a PowerPC Mac. The PPC binary will run on an Intel mac but only through rosetta and you do not want to see how crappy that is. There are two versions of OS X and you need to either code for both of them (called universal) or for pick a platform.
