Comments: campgrounds was always one of my favorite ut2004 maps, so i tried to remake it for ut3. I'm not to good at mapping but i think its coming along good so

Before you start making it look like a map, fix the scale. Just by looking at the pics I see that the scale is way to big, take it down to 75% of what you have now.

I agree as well, it seems UT3 will be much better suited to up close and personal maps.

Yay, nice to remake Campgrounds. I agree about taking down the scale though.

Under, now Camps... waiting for someone to do Goose next, so that UT3 will feel a bit like home. :D

It's originally a Quake map. There was no dodge jump in Quake.

perhaps in the first picture, but in the second it looks like the ceiling will drop onto your head any moment.

I think he should do what Epic did : design a bare-bones subtracted-cubes only map that matches what campground looked like and then playtest/modify until it feels good. Meshes, textures and lightning can be done afterwards.

Needs a lot of work to get it up to stock quality. I'd try to stick with the built-in assets and get rid of that ridiculous "Hell"/Quake look. I wouldn't mind if you tried mixing up the layout some to add some more z-axis play, but then I think Campgrounds is a pretty poor map that's only good for showing off 3-box DM basics.

Porting the UT2k4 version over directly doesnt seem like that great of an idea, seeing as the movement has changed drastically, it would feel like a completely different map.

You'll have to move alot of the core bsp around in order for it to play well in UT3.

Both are great points, couldn't have said either better; constructive feedback ftw. it's off to a good start i would say, and it's great to see some user created stuff before the game is even out.

I bet you know that you have to scale down some parts of the map because there is no double Dodge in UT3.

While I appreciate the idea (create a port of a very popular 2k4 map, and in the process get some noteriety as a mapper) I think you should be cautious and careful in your remake. Because there were several terrible versions of this map for 2k4, and several pretty impressive versions... As numerous posters have pointed out, scaling is one of the most important issues, but don't forget about item placement (jump boots? helmet?). After you've got the layout, see if you can find teams of players to run scrimmages on it, and collect their feedback to see what might be working and/or broken.

And as far as the look of the map, I encourage you to continue building it from the stock textures included with UT3, but definitely get some creative help from someone who's aesthetics you admire to make sure that the map looks cohesive and that the textures and structures work together cohesively. The first screenshots you included seemed like the base textures were very very small and the repitition of patterns wrapped somewhat haphazardly around low poly shapes made it look not unlike a map made in 1998.

p.s.
While 2k3 and 2k4 featured a dodge-JUMP, there has never been a double dodge in any version of UT... unless you count the matrix moves/multidodge mutators.

ok dude... in germany the game is out and you can make it english... you put the localisation stuff from the demo in ur ut3 folder fic the ini and rdy to go ;)

ok that's what i did ^^ the tut is even somewhere in this Forum and to find at utzone too ;)

map looks not so good atm scale textures... but i think with more good feedback as i saw it here it will become a good map again :)

I so wish this map would curl up and die in UT3.

Its 2k4 counterpart was a mapping disgrace.
Overly stretched meshes, terrible use of textures and lighting.
It played... Okaaaay but it wasn't anything great.
Fugly fugly fugly map.

If you're going to re-do it make it worth while.
Big open floor space needs detailing not just a tile texture.

The screens so far look to overscaled for UT3.

Of course someones going to make the dodge jump mutator eventually. But then i wont connect to a server running it :D

How do I open this map? I have ut3 full but they dont appear if I put the correct files in the correct folders like what the readme.txt said. It just does not appear.

For some reason I can't download the map... download starts, then quickly finishes. But I only get about 200k of file, not the whole 4mb.

anyone else having issues?

The layout is pretty solid, but there's still a few issues.

1. It looks like a Quake2 map. You really need to put a lot of static meshes in there.... or at least something.
2. There's many areas where the BSP structure is really ugly, particularly the stairway by the flak. There's also quite a few areas where there are inexplicable invisible jaggies sticking out to get stuck on (namely corners and such).

I can't blame mapper cos i'm making same maps :D
But i recommend you to work on:
DECORATIONS: Map looks empty.
TEXTURING: Brick wall here (http://i4.tinypic.com/6wn7dxf.jpg) looks wierd. Noone will build it. Cos its so tall it could fall. Maybe some horisontal lines or columns to hold it?
STYLE: Oriental style arcs looks terrible in this surrounding on same screenshot (http://i4.tinypic.com/6wn7dxf.jpg).

And don't place ammo near weapon. It will cause camping.

From the screen shots, it looks way to wide open which may have worked in 2k3/2k4 due to dodge jumping, but I don't think it will work at all in UT3. Tighten up the map and give it that old school Quack crampyness feeling. :D

A 2k4 map in UT3 is great, it doesn't matter or it 'fits' in the UT3 universe, as long as there are maps and UT3 weapons

If you are going to to this map justice, load it up in Quake3 and be mindful of the room sizes and particularly the angles of being about to shoot through doors into other rooms on the bottom level. Also you should make sure to get scaling right particularly on the rail/lg/sniper walkway so that you can do a double jump + dodge off the "bridge" area (as it is called) over to sniper. In other words the distance should be just far enough to make it challenging but not impossible.

Initial thoughts, the lower area between flak and shock is too large. You would be better off creating geometry from scratch vs trying to import a 2k4 version and scaling it. And for that, better to play the map in Q3 as it had the best geometry. If you can duplicate that it will be the best version for UT yet, as it had proper doorway and room sizes to allow for shooting between rooms, particularly from flak to shock through the lava pit area. Basically no version of this map really did it justice in UT yet.

I just played this map a little bit with Eliots Dodge-jump Mutator enabled and i felt right at home there, although it does look a bit odd here and there still, but that is gonna be fixed i think.

But i also noticed, that at least from my memory, some places in this version are even bigger than they were in 2k4 (especially the Platform at the top with the Rocketlauncher seems very huge for me)

Not much going on with it, no character.

This needs a lot more decoration and maybe make it a little smaller? I am only going by the screen shots I don’t have the game yet.

The size of the map is perfect imo, good Z and enough room to maneuver. 2 things: It's possible to wall dodge from bridge to sniper without problems, but when I jump from sniper to bridge (that is placed a bit higher) I land on an invisible edge out on the trim. Adjust the whole sniper platform so it's in level with the bridge and have a look at the collision of that trim mesh on the bridge. Secondly the jump pads; there is no air control so people become easy prey on them and it removes a lot of the fun of bouncing around the belt and DD using the jump pads.

I understand that you haven't spent much effort on the visuals so I'm not commenting it, but if you could find a nice mech-yet-colorful theme instead of the old boring castle I would be very pleased. :)

The Asian textures don´t really fit into Campgrounds. A Necris setting would be much better.

If you don´t mind, it would be good if you rearange the weapons, similar to the UT2 version (DM-Campgrounds2004-LE, I think)

the asian theme really doesnt go with the big concrete walls etc, asian architecture is all about the delicacy.. necris could be cool or just harsh bloody industrial style

MrZeaL, great job!!

The map still needs MUCH texture and decoration work, but the most important elements are there....the main map geometry. :)

I probably don't need to tell you the funkyness that is happening with some of the textures, but so far, you are off to a great start.

Just a few tips:
1) Campgrounds has a roof.
2) Lights...and LOTS of them!!! We don't need any more darker maps. Even if you have to put a zillion torches around the map to simulate lights, do it.
3) More decorations.

Other than, awesome job! :D

I know the point of this map is gameplay, not visuals, but you if you play without your graphics settings maxed out the mesh textures look terrible unless you get very close.

Looks like this map has died .. bummer ... I hate it when level designers don't complete maps that people have spent time beta testing and giving feedback on. This is why many times I am hesitant to test Beta and Alpha maps ... what is the point if they are not going to be completed?

I am hosting a TDM tournament, we have 22 teams signed up so far. This map is on our pickup server and is quite popular, however we were expecting another release :/

Please consider polishing this baby up soon as we are starting the tournament in about 2 weeks and would like to use this map in it!

The other versions of this map aren't as playable yet, this is the best we have so far.

The major complaints with this map, are the reflective floors and the crazy air control on the jumppads.
