View Full Version : I bought and installed Gears for Windows. Where is the editor?

I installed Gears on my Vista PC, but I can't find the editor. I find this very frustrating. I spend $50.00 to be able to use the editor. I find no separate mention of it in my start menu, and I only have a shortcut under games that brings up the game. The link in the game documentation isn't correct, and I don't see much- if anything addressing this on gamesforwindows.com, on the gears site, or in the link that is for modding with Gears. How can someone sell a game listing a game editor with this kind of support? I have lost time on a Fri. trying to find out how to find the editor, that I could've used doing something else.
I'm not the only one that's had this problem: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/gearsofwar/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-39391544&pid=942000

I haven't figured it out from that post. I asked again, because I wasn't getting any more help there. This is ridiculous how much work I've gone through already to figure out how to find it. Why couldn't they just have had it as a separate program-or is it a Vista issue. If it is, Vista is out. How could they have me spend $50.00 for this, and go through this? It is not acceptable.

I just found where to install it from the very first when you put in the disk, and then when the gears install page comes up. There's a "More Options" selection. Click on that, and that's where you choose to install the editor. That's a mistake to do it that way. I would've rather had seen the choice to install the editor on the first page. Now I've wasted I don't know how much time this Fri.

Your nothing but a time waster arnt you, wasting so much time trying to find the editor, cant imagine how much time you'll waste "in the editor".:p
At anyrate, create a shortcut if you dont have one already for launching Gears of War, open the properties of the shortcut, and under the target box type "editor" at the end, with quotes.

I'm glad you pointed that out... I just installed gears and expected the editor to be in there. But I found that handy dandy trick to work fine. Maybe it is a vista issue, because I am on XP and after adding the word editor to the end of the target it worked for me.

My time hasn't been wasted maybe- by being able to help someone- or others out. Maybe Epic had a reason for putting the install for the editor behind the "More Options" choice- but it may cause a lot of confusion and frustration for those looking for it. Keeping things simple can be good sometimes.

What would the exact file path name look like then (if I need to place that shortcut? It has been very frustrating today dealing with this. I hope nobody minimizes that.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\WarGame-G4WLive.exe" editor
Also it seems I miss guided you by saying to put the quotes around editor, when they're suppose to be around the destination of the entire thing.

Thank you very much! I finally found it. I had no shorcut. I have Vista. I went into Windows Explorer, and selected the following: (C:)>Program Files>Microsoft Games> Gears of War> and then selected the "Binaries" folder. In it was the Startup file. It's an .exe file. I right clicked on it, and chose "Create Shortcut". It says, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?". Select "Yes". Then I right clicked on that shortcut>chose properties, and in the open box beside where it says "Target", I now have: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\WarGame-G4WLive.exe" editor. If you installed it somewhere else than the C, it won't look like that. It does take a while for the (Unreal) Editor for Gears to come up.
