correct settings for 3dsmax export

Tried to export some meshes from 3dsmax 2008 and 3dsmax9 using both aes and dxf and both crash the editor on loading.
Anyone know which options need to be set in max on export ?
Is the editor using the 2004 dxf or 2007 dxf ?

I export a poly as an .ase file with default settings + coordinates. Works for me :)
