View Full Version : UE3 Tutorials
Alright well I know its not much for now but it might help some. I just made a simple step by step of how to get your level off the ground.
I added links to Hourences and ArcadiaVincennes. They have great detailed information on materials and kismet.

how come i couldnt find any of the skydome static meshes? :(
and im having trouble with the lighting
Ah :) When you click on the SkyDome package it may not have loaded all of the resources in that file. To fix this right click on the skydome package and select 'Fully Load' This will load everything from that package into the editor. I will put a note of that into the tutorial :)

WoW thx so much:rolleyes:
If you don't like them figure it out for yourself. Others would like a quick start to mapping.

Awesome tutorial, thanks. One question I do have is where are the skyboxes? I don't seem to have the skybox package at all, either partially or fully loaded. I have gone to exactly where it is on the screenshot of the browser, and it's not there. Any ideas?
Excellent tuts, just what I needed to jump right in the editor.

Check out the skydomes package and then right click on it and go to "Fully Load." This will load up everything in the package.
Also, has anyone figured out how to export textures or statics or character meshes from the editor? Is this even possible? Anytime I try to export from an Epic package it tells me that the option is not available on "cooked" packages.

I don't have a 'Skydomes' package anywhere in my generic browser, that's the issue. Ideas?
Well the actual package is located @
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\WarGame\CookedPC\Environments\SkyDomes
You can try to open that in the generic browser.

Actually my GoW editor crashed and my skybox package dissapeared as well, your not alone.

and here is how I fixed it.
-----------------------------
1. In your generic browser right click and hold. From the pop up window click New Material.
2. In the package field type SkyDomes
3. Name your material something stupid like ajhasdjahsjashd.
4. When prompted to load the package click yes.
5. Navigate your packages folder to find SkyDomes now loaded with all of the domes and textures.
(Random Note: You will see an asterix on the SkyDomes package. This is the editor's way of telling you the package has been changed since you last saved it. You can right click > save if you wish to save your package changes. I do not suggest doing so now)
--------------
I know an easier way to do this as well. You can just File>Open and navigate to the package SkyDomes... (but you have to find it first)
windows search could probably help, so ill be doing that now. Anyway hope that helps

Future Reference.
The skydomes package was located at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\WarGame\CookedPC\Environments\SkyDomes
So in the future if you have to reload packages, just File Open and navigate to the CookedPC folder, the packages are organized in there.

Hey CiS, thanks for the quick tutorials! I have a quick question, how do I add a collision model to my custom static meshes? Thanks ahead of time.

You have 4 options for collision meshes. Open the mesh in the browser and use the "collision" pulldown menu:
1) You can use the DOP options to shrink wrap your mesh with a simple structure (most efficient)
2) You can use "auto convex" to generate a more complex collision "shrink wrap" (try to keep your "primative count" in the window below 5 or 10.
3) You can place a mesh, use the builder brush to shape what you specifically want around the mesh, then rt click on the mesh and save the brush as the collision for the object.
4) You can build a collision hull in the modeling package with the object at the time of import. I don't do this often because 98% of the time it's not required and the other methods are much faster. You'll need to wait for the UDN for specifics on this.
Remember that when you place a new mesh as a mover or physics object in a map, it defaults to "no collision" for performance reasons, you'll probably set it to "block all" in it's properties when it's set.

Thanks Lee. I just found the method for adding in the collision model to your mesh when you export as an ASE file. I think this method will work for my needs for now. I'll have to look in to the DOP options you suggested. It's been a while since I last worked with UnrealEd, and I'm a bit rusty. But things are moving along ;)

Ok, here's a question for you (I'm rather new to mapping so this might be simlple). I finally got SkyDomes up and fully loaded. There's tons of beautiful images in there; however, only 3 of them are static meshes and only one of those static meshes appear to have anything on it. Is there some way to use all the other pretty sky images in the folder? Can I make them static meshes or apply them to one?
Thanks.
Ah yes I see what you mean I believe. There are several materials that use those textures inside of that package. What you want to do is place the static mesh in your map then go to its properties (Right click> Properties or double click) Then go to StaticMeshActor>StaticMeshComponent>Rendering>Materials. When you click on materials it will show a green + sign. Click this then it will add a material to this static mesh. Now in the generic browser select the material that you want and go back to the Static Mesh properties. There will be the added material under Materials. When you click on it (Its name is [0]) a green arrow will appear. Click the green arrow and it will apply the selected material to this mesh :)
Follow what MrSilent said below.

The way I found easiest with skyboxes was to add the skydome thats already textured (NewSkyBox_DR_SMesh) go into your skybox materials, highlight the one you want to use then right click on the skydome itself.
Then follow the pic below.

ok so i had never even seen this editor (or any others) before today and i really need to know just some basic stuff. What i want to know is how to move your viewpoint around freely, and once you do something like select the cube, how do you modify its shape...iv'e seen tuts' but lots of them say "make the cube the shape you want it" but how??? and then i'll need to know about textures and stuff. But i am very eager to learn so please help me out with a VERY easy to follow tut.
Thank you guys!:)

Click on the View > Browser Windows > Generic (If not open allready) then Click the little box next to Material, after you've found a Material (Green Outline) click your floor and Click the CSG: Add button on the left, that should do it. If I remeber correctly ^^
