I'm finding the game is flawless with no lag whatsoever as long as the ping is under 100. It seems that we overreacted with the Dedicated Servers, I've been playing most games with a ping around 70 and have not had a single issue with lag or host advantage yet

I think he knows that, he's just saying there is no button to bind that activates the microphone, as opposed to having it permanently broadcasting your voice/sound until you mute it.

Voice chat is useless if you don't have a microphone, therefore, basic communication is unsupported. Hence why we're all using the console to do it.

I don't mean to be an ass, but honestly, who decided on that one? It's hard to think Epic really cares about PC when they leave out the most basic multiplayer commands. I'm sure it will be patched, it's in incredibly high demand, and it's just plain annoying that we have to use the developer console to access it. This is the time for Community Managers to really relay the things we want in a patch to the team, hint hint. ;)

Let us host private servers without paying for it like we have with epic's other games. Right now people are joining and I just want to play with my friends, not strangers. I'll just shoot them and mess their game up and make it miserable for them until they leave. That's the only way I can keep the people I want on and keep the people I want off. I won't pay to make my game private.

Has anyone figured out how to bind the command "talk" to a button via the .ini files? You can easily bind any command to any button in 2k4, but UE3s new control configuration, and being that this is GoW, I haven't tried figuring out if it will work in BaseInput.ini or not.

I've used the stat net command in the UT3 beta aswell, seeing as it never displayed your ping ingame.

The Problem with this at least for me, is it consistantly says I have 0 ping more then half the time, where as it feels like I'm pinging 200 or more, this happens in both GoW, and the UT3 beta.

Try running the game from the autorun. For whatever reason that's the only way I can get it to work without the C++ error, but once I start the game I can run it however long I want without crashing.

I have reinstalled the DX10 and it seems that it helped a bit i was able to finish the whole prison level without a crash... Came back to write about it... going back to play now... will see if it works for longer...

Download the latest DirectX Redist (google "dx9.0c redist" I'm too lazy to do it for you)
Download the latest video card beta drivers (169.04 for nvidia, shoot yourself for ATI)
Download the AMD dual core optimizer and driver(intel users are fine)

That fixes 90% of the "I can't run it" issues. Along with the live redist in my first post.

I am having somewhat of the same issue. I can "log in" but it wont sign me into Live. Was working fine yesterday.

Can we get some reps from Epic to assist us or at least some info on getting a refund for this game?

I'm going to CC on Fri. with a printout of this forum and a couple others and show them that the game is defective and it doesn't work and maybe they'll refund my money. I'm asking for help from Epic in case they don't refund my money since it's opened software.

I've installed this on 2 pcs one with AMD, Nvidia build and another with Intel, ATI and the game doesn't work on either system.

This falls under lemon laws of each state and I'll mention that if there's a problem getting my money back but why hasn't Epic or the powers that be announced something or at least tried to help refund our hard earned money? We paid for a product and a game, shouldn't we get what we paid for? Or how do these people sleep at nights? :confused:

Nevermind, i went into CC today and let them know what was wrong with the game and how it wouldn't even start and they refunded me 100% no restocking or anything. For anyone looking for a refund make sure you let them KNOW about the issues and how all your other games run fine and ask to speak to a manager not any of the pimple faced 12 year olds. They should refund it without problems.

I can't recover my Xbox Live Gold profile into my Gears of War for Windows, and thus I have been unable to play multi-player since the game came out!

I have tried all things I can think of, updated both Gears and GFW using their own external patches, updated all my drivers, tried telling GfW-Live which port to use in the registry -- nothing works.

It will say that I have no internet connection, even when I do. I can connect and play just fine with my Xbox 360, passing all connection tests with flying colours. And Unreal Tournament 3 for PC connects to multiplayer just fine. So I'm confused on that one. Also, it will say "incorrect password" if I type something wrong on purpose as my Live password. How can Gears-PC/GfW-Live know the password is wrong if it can't see the internet connection?

I know lots of people have probably mentioned this problem already, but I just needed to vent my complaining a little.

Thats the key 2 keys left of Enter middle row on UK keyboards (also @), I believe its the key above TAB on US keyboards.

Once the console opens type "say" minus the quotes then space and type whatever you want to actually say....dosn't work during game progress mic conversations and custscenes.

I was having a problem with creating a profile. After reading the posts here, I was able to fix that issue by getting the latest version of Windows Live.
I now have a profile and I am able to alter and save settings.

I run the game in SP just fine. My problem is when attempting to update Live or playing multiplayer. I have downloaded the Patch from MS-LIVE.

The problem is that when Windows Live tries to run an update automatically,
it exits that game, launches a CMD line box. Then my ASUS Bios screen launches like it is trying to update my BIOS.

I do not want to do that ! When I hit cancel, that whole process stops and nothing seems to get done.

I have registered and set up a profile on 'Live' earlier, but it doesn't seem to find it. I got the free GOLD for 1 month offer. I have a profile for XBOX now. I don't even have an XBOX! Would my profile be the same for XBOX and Windows Live ? Confused about the difference.

Any clues ?

Let me know if I need I need to provide any more info. This game has great potential if I can play it !

If I'm understanding your problem correctly it sounds like LIVE still thinks you need to update.

I haven't personally seen this, but there's another thread that talks about this issue (with a couple workarounds).

Basically it sounds like the BIOS update service for certain ASUS motherboards is thinking that the patches are BIOS updates when they in fact aren't.

My guess is that the bios updater software is looking for a particular filename or other identifier to determine which updates are bios updates. In this case it seems like there's a name (or other) collision that confuses it. My guess is that you could stop whatever service handles the ASUS bios updates and then patch successfully if you don't want to uninstall the bios updater software as the thread below suggests.

Anyway, here's that thread.

This assumes that the problem you're hitting matches the one described in that thread. It might be worth manually downloading and applying the updates (rather than doing it from within the game) as it will give you a bit more control (and allow you to unpack the packages as discussed in the thread above if you choose to.)

With regard to your second set of questions regarding the profile...
There is only one profile. It works on both Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows - LIVE. If you have a profile for either you have it for both. You likely can't sign in with it because the service first makes sure that you're running the latest version of the Games for Windows - LIVE binaries before it lets you successfully sign in to LIVE (that's why you're being offered the system update). By taking care of the first problem you'll probably solve this one too.

I disabled my CA AntiSpyware and firewall and that seems to have fixed the problem. I'm running Vista Home Prem on a new Dell XPS 420 Core2Quad 2.4 GHz, 3GB RAM and an 8800GT video card. This looks good now, I guess I better read the F$#%% manual and figure out how to kill stuff...

Nobody even plays the deserted game anyway.

That statement *CANNOT* be 100% correct. The lag of the game does not solely rely on ping time, it also relies on the host's connection speed. For instance, you could ping 75 to a host two houses away from you even if he was on dial-up. You would still get lag, though, if just one more person entered the match. Conversely, you could get zero lag if your host has an 8mbps connection even if you ping 130.

I have experienced this quite a few times. I've *maintained* a less than 80 ping to the host but still lagged severely, and also maintained a 120 ping to a host and not lagged at all. Considering I get a solid 62FPS all the time, it could not be my machine buckling to high performance demands.

Yes...Epic said no dedicated servers quite a while ago so it's kind of implied there will be a host for each match.

If you mean host advantage on the other hand, there going to fix it as much as possible so that it will be either gone or barely noticeable. You gotta remember that no matter how optimized there net code is, if the host has a crappy connection then there will be bullet lag and the host will have an advantage.

Just bought GoW.
Checked some of the problem posts and didn't see one like mine. The game loaded up fine, I get into the single player mode and the opening video works great but as soon as the gear is supposed to follow the other guy the environment spins around and the audio has a spinning sound in it too. This is very strange. At 1st i thought this was the game then quickly realized something was wrong. I have newest Windows Live upgrade. Machine Specs:

Play a private game and invite your friends, use your brain instead of whinning to people. Your acting like a child because you can't figure out how to make a private match. You don't have to pay for private on the 360 haha, and the game is fu*ked on both systems so you chose wrong

Okay, I have a problem where I was in a game with a person (I don't know which person) who was tampering with the game to try and get himself to the top of a leaderboard. Once the match ended, I was sent all the way back to level (rank) 1 accompanied by -2trillion experience points. I have no way of making it back even to exp points 0 and starting over from level one. Anyone know of any way to fix this? Or have any way to contact Epic? Because I have contacted Microsoft customer support and they said they do not have the tools to help me, only Epic can because it has something to do with their Game Servers. I cannot find any way to contact Epic directly either, so basically I am stuck. Any suggestion will help so please, reply to this post or (preferably) email me at: zhineman@gmail.com

Let us host private servers without paying for it like we have with epic's other games. Right now people are joining and I just want to play with my friends, not strangers. I'll just shoot them and mess their game up and make it miserable for them until they leave. That's the only way I can keep the people I want on and keep the people I want off. I won't pay to make my game private.
