ok got it to run first try.
yes it took a good 50 minutes to load the game
my specs.
Amd X2 6000+
gigabyte board (about a year old)
4 gigs of corsair ram
geforce 8800 640 meg card (not overclocked) running 163.71_forceware
WD raptor 74 gig drive
installed and rebooted right away
launched GOW installed the amd processor update it wanted me too
REBOOTED
launched GOW
signed on to live
applied the update
REBOOTED
launched gow
downloaded my live profile
launched game and i was in.
right now running at 1900 x 1600 on medium settings i cant run it any higher as the tearing is to bad and it does look sweet!!

Another suggestion.
Please make sure you have successfully applied the Games for Windows - LIVE system update (the update referred to above). There is a known issue with Gears that could make this a bit trickier than it should be.
Information about it is posted at various sources. Here's one..

I'd recommend manually downloading the update and applying it outside of the game, just to make sure you have it. Here's the link for the installer package:

If you happen to be running into the issue requiring these work-arounds it's possible that you think you've updated after trying to sign into LIVE and then the updater is shutting down the game. That shouldn't lead to an actual crash like people are seeing, but by getting the update applied it ensures that you aren't being bit by that particular problem.

im also running windows xp, sp2 with the above setup. ALL IS FINE. IM WILLING TO HELP HERE, im a computer tech/network analyst for the Federal Aviation Administration.. post your specs though

Thanks for the links Glartwort. I'll update my Live and let you know if it helps. As you said, at the very least it will discount that particular problem.
