Has anyone heard if there's a current timeline for when the Unreal 3 section of UDN will be made available to the mod & mapping community.

It's never been open to the community.

If you have an ACTUAL and BOUGHT license of the engine, then you will get access to the site.

Having the watered down UE3 engine from GoW or UT3 is not considered "licensed".

If you buy gears shouldnt you have access to the "mod" section though?

Prehaps they aren't ready to "unlock" it yet.

What's the point of having a Gears Mod section in the UDN if it's passworded and gamers can't get to it??

The above statement is completely false. The UDN content for thepast versions of the Unreal engine have been available for a long time now.

but if your a studio dev who paid allmost a million for ue3 and all of a sudden the support you paid for is being giving to the plubic to see. i'd be a little mad. im sure its going to take epic a long time to get out any senstive information for other studios out of udn first before they can make it plubic.

In the PC manual it states to go to the below URL for Enreal Editor information.

http://udn.epicgames.com/three/gearsmodhome

This link does not work and returns the 440 error, page can not be found. Can someone explain why this isn't available?

I can tell you exactly why, kinda.

When I had this problem I sent an email the the Epic Tech support. To my surprise I had a response about an hour later telling me more or less (As for the unreal mods link we are experiencing technical problems and are working on it diligently. Please keep checking back). So not all hope is lost. Tinker for now but it sounds like we will have documentation soon.

man even with a manual it will still be hard for the avg joe to make a map. I have to hand it to the modders, they have lots of patience and lots of skill i salute who ever mods. :) I tried it and man is it hard. First you have to make the damn cube then you have to make your own textures and meshes not to mention more squares of buildings that you wnat to build. SOO confusing.

I opened one of the official maps with the editor and all i can say is holy shih, the developers are hard workers . Salute :)

Well if it makes you feel any better the level designer is not the level artist. If you like designing levels then make your levels. Even if your modeling isn't good enough to make GoW equivalent assets and all sorts of highly detailed crap, as long as you can design a good fun level you will be fine. In the industry the level artists create the high polygon house to replace your 6 polygon box that you named House1.

With the internet you can more or less do the same thing. Make a cool level, and come online to these forums. I am sure there are a few people on here who know how to model texture, and use zbrush / mudbox well enough to produce your desired result.

The content for the UDN Gears Mod section doesn't have any "real" information about using the Unreal Editor. It's extremely brief in nature. Am I missing something????

This is all it has in the level design section:

Definitive collection of articles and tutorials on creating scenes in UnrealEngine3. Includes information on UnrealUI, Kismet, Matinee, PhAT, and Cascade; material and terrain editing tools; static mesh, texturing, and animation tools; sound tools; and post-processing.

On the "http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/GearsMods.html" page under packages it states:

See the Unreal Packages page for more information.

The "Unreal Packages page" is password protected so your directing modders to what??

On page "http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/ModGettingStarted.html":

Basics
Most Unreal Engine games come with a version of the editor that is specific to that game. UnrealScript source code is available as a separate download; and the script compiler is built into the game engine - again, specific to that game. Alone, those tools are enough to begin creating game modifications; however many will want to consider some additional tools and utilities.

The "UnrealScript" link is password protected also. You're directing modders to more information but they can't get to it?

I can understand having a private section for paid licenses.
But it would be nice if we could get atleast read only access to the technical docs.

atleast give us access to :

A lot more parts of UDN UE3 will be open once UT3 makes it to store shelves.
