Hi all,
I am in the planning and early construction phases for the sequel to my map DM-Under_LE from UT2004. I am interested in feedback from the community on new ideas and item placements for the map. Right now I am planning to place an invisibility in the air vent near the rocket launcher (the one that previously contained ammo), jump boots near the link gun, replacing the shield by the shock rifle with a helmet, and the large shield with a shield belt. I'm also thinking about where I might expand the map and have a few ideas going for that, again, suggestions are welcome.

Very nice, make sure you cant jump on the ball in the middle with jumpboots. Maybe only from lg or something, and then with jumpboots.
Don't expand the map imo.

Looking forward to it Marsfyre. Under_LE was in my offline map rotation for quite awhile. it will be nice to see a worthy successor in UT3 :)

Don't remake it unless you're planning on doing something about the extremely long lines of sight that make the map much worse than it needs to be.

Seriously, it's a fun map. I'd prefer something that allows a dodge or means to get up to the shock from the lower level.

Bigger lifts.

No protruding meshes in the hallway.

Little less foggy & no floaty things...

What's wrong with getting on the ball?

The hidden vent w/amp - or path to - was a bit more difficult than needs to be.

Size is good right now.

If you are going to call it "Under" - it should really be under something - perhaps under 'Heat Ray'?

I would hope for no Buzzing sound...

Mars you know I loved that map so this is great news ... looking forward to it ... no suggestions to add ... but I know you will think of something once you see what UT3 can do. Maybe you can have a small crack in the ceiling and have it raining or have there be some weather effects going on outside you can see through the windows and skybox. Anyway I am just glad you are doing this ... this was a map I forgot to add in my lists of maps that I would love to see redone.

Its always been possible to get onto the ball

according to UT stats, Dm-Under_LE got more play than corrugation, try asking me later once I finish a few of my own maps ;p

dodge to shock from lower level... well I would've considered it but I don't think that wierd angle dodge thing works anymore. Still, I'll think about it

lifts.. also a good idea, but not too much I don't think (maybe 1/3 more)]

I've been working with UE3 for almost 2 years, there will be major revisions to everything, but I think I'm going to keep the flavor the same (unlike remakes such as curse)

Hmmz the ball is a tactical point, in the current version its pretty hard to get on it, with the mid lift its possible and with a very difficult walldodgejump. If he adds jumpboots that might be ruined, so I say, make it high enough so you cant get on the ball with jumpboots except if you're standing at lg (now becoming a sniper).

thanks, but now I have to point out.. its easy as hell to get on top of the ball with a lift jump from the lower lift with a simple single lift jump ;p

The mid lift if I'm not mistaking? I found it a pretty hard singe lift jump ;p

Cool that you decided to do Under for UT3, more remakes like this and I will maybe prefer the new game to 2k4 one day. ;D

Hmm, I'm not a mapper and not even a DM player (playing TAM, now stone me to death ;)) and can hardly say anything about weapon placement and stuff. The map itself is close to perfect anyway, as it offers a nice combination of spam and hitscan, I love that.

But what I actually like about the "Sulfur" version (or "Crypt of f00k" or whatever) is the additional room at the lower level. In Under you can easily get outspammed in that poky lift corner where the other version has the entrance to this room. I can only see advantages in having a room or at least a corridor there. :D (and it would fit the "Under" theme to have some kind of gloomy and maybe dark little area there, I guess)

Oh, and I hope that you can still manage to include enough lift-walldodge possibilities and ways of moving in general in your new Under version. I just worry a bit because of the new moving. :x


The mid lift if I'm not mistaking? I found it a pretty hard singe lift jump ;p

It is indeed easy from both lifts; Under has rather slow ones anyway, imo. :P

Glad to hear your remaking this map!! I remember when i always wanted to play it and no-one else knew about it / liked it. My absolute favorite thing to do in this map, was to lift jump from the mid left to the left wall, then dodge-jump off of it to reach where LG was. Fast transportation :D

As far as expanding the map? I have to disagree. It's perfect the way it is, and like 'LêøÑ¡dås' said... it's a perfect fusion of hitscan and spam. Of course some stuff needs to be moved and switched around for the UT3 version (like you mentioned, jump boots/invisibility, etc...), but that is of course expected.

The buzz did get somewhat annoying, but i saw it as part of the map so it's not a big deal

And touching on the jumpboots idea with the ball... i think in order for that to happen, the ball would become way to large and tall, and would look way to abstract in the map, I think you'll have to live with the fact that the boots will grant you access to such things as the ball, and the vents, which would also make the powerups more accessible.

At any rate, again i'm glad to hear your going ahead and remake this. Thanks!! ;)

Yeah! Good to see you remaking it! Under was always one of my favourite maps.

A few things would need testing though (such as the lack of dodge jump, gravity differences). I guess that would all come into consideration in playtesting (hey, I'm up for it :P).

That's map mostly played in TAM. Never seen it in DM / TDM rotation.

I prefer to have the reddish wall textures like the ones in the original version.

You should redesign the map a bit to prevent the hitscans from the toplevel.

I played that map a lot in AM/TAM, but never in DM/TDM. So, that's where I'm coming from when I talk about gameplay.

1. Ambient noise will be fine as long as there isn't any annoying buzz.
2. Maybe do something extra with the corridor under the globe.
3. Add cover points along the outside wall in the long hall leading to the big lift.
4. Perhaps set the whole map underground with moodier lighting and chain link fencing allowing you to look out at other activities outside the map, such as subway trains whizzing by.

Anyways, good luck with the design. :)

Alright, here's what you gotta do.

Gameplay wise, sculpt it up exactly like it was in 04. Don't add anything new (it was great like it was, and still is).
If you must change the gameplay, then let it be to better suit the playerscale and movement of UT3.

Graphically I have a few ideas (Was planning a remake myself, incase you didn't show up to do the dirty work :p).
Art wise, I really liked the discrete visual style of the old map, but with the new engine I personally think it would be suitable to take that subtlety to the next level.
In the original "under the world" I interpreted the ball in the middle of the level as the world, and the bound nature of it (the rings) as the player being bound to the level.
I may be over interpreting yes, and I'm personally not a fan of it, but this time round it gave me an idea.
Alternately, one could interpret the ball as the limits of the engine, and now with the new engine we have so much more power, and so fewer limits.
Channeling this into actual ART, one could depict this as a glowing orb of light, or simply a bright light coming from the center.
The Rings would still be there, but I'm thinking more something along the lines of them being shattered on the ground, showing that the limits are broken, and the true power of UNREAL flowing.
I'm not going to tell you what to do (Nothing good comes of that, nor would you be listening blindly to a person you don't know) So I'd rather inspire you to do something on your own, as I know you are more than capable of pulling off an amazing level.
Tech wise I'm still suggesting that you go with the subtle design of the old map.
Just because it's a new engine doesn't mean it has to be pushed to the limits to be pretty.

Not really sad at all when tons of folks are requesting great maps be brought back and made even better. You don't have to play them you know and if you want some original content you can always learn to map and then provide the community with free content. If you can't do that then you really don't have any reason to complain about whatever it is other modders decide to do.

it was played (mostly as a TAM map) because it was one of the few maps that made weapons other than shock and LG useful.

this is mostly because of the wall and ramp placements.

with the remake, there are a couple of features that would improve the map over it's 2k4 counterpart:

-no buzz (other mappers, are you listening?)

-adjust scale to fit UT3's movement (smaller/tighter corridors; length is probably fine)

-do something more with the corridors in mid area below ball (maybe more complexity, maybe powerup placement, ESPECIALLY JUMPBOOTS)

:D:D:p Nice comeback!! What is it with people telling level designers how to name their own maps anyway? :confused: Anyway that looks great so far and I can't wait to see a beta ... wow. :) I am still a bit giddy that this great map will soon be available to play in UT3. That is so awesome. Maybe this will get Teddie to do a remake or two (Crane and Aztec would be so awesome) ;).
