View Full Version : 1 minute of silence for the trans-cam

I just read the BU UT3 previews and was quite shocked to read that the translocator camera had to be removed due some severe netcode bug.
Farewell, handy feature. You will be missed...

Question for Epic:
Is there a chance the function might return with a future patch/bonus pack if you manage to squash this relating bug sometime after the release or are the problems buried too deeply in the engine to be fixable without breaking other stuff?

...

If even small features such as these have to be axed instead of fixed... I hope the moddability of the engine hasn't been compromised.

How long has this game been in development? And we have our first 'netcode' issue....

I dont care so much about the cam.... but any issue with the netcode concerns me.

transcam FTW...

I guess there won't be any 3rd-party cameras at all? This makes the U3 engine sound so weak....

Perhaps they'll patch it back in if/when they resolve the issue?

Not to my knowledge. I didn't play 2k4 that long, and rarely used the trans in that game, so I didn't even know it had a cam at all.

I thought it was a handy little feature too.
It's not a major loss, but I'll miss it.

Yet another reason why Epic needs to have someone competent do their manuals and documentation. And in-game tutorials on the subject would be nice for newcomers, given how many options each weapon has. What other FPS can boast having this sort of complexity to their weapons?

Nope. Nothing about the game ever confused me. I use the manual as a reference, not a starting point.

Well you missed the telecam ;) I usually don't read manuals either, but if you have a manual and nothing to do atm looking through it can be enjoyable.

I always thought the trans-cam was a little cheap... So it doesn't break my heart that there taking it out of the game.

Although, I don't understand how a remote camera can't work if your are able to watch other players from their point of view (observer)

Darn it was handy.

When I was defending the flag I would place it in a corner or something and then go hide somewhere and someone would come strolling along take a quick look and see no one was protecting the flag. Grab it and start to make a mad dash only to find me on his tail blasting him:). I bet they wondered where the heck I came from.

had fun planting the disk near a door in Bridge of fate or at the flag and telefraging.
in instagib i used the camera to look around and when i saw someone i teleported and killed them.

I used it alot in UT2004. I tried play without using it and I can't translocate where I want lol :)
So I'll hard to me to become a practised translocating without the cam

Me too. At least I exactly know where I will translocate. But don't worry, they will get it back. They just need to fix that bug.

It was one of the things that helped with CTF. You could know where or close to where you'd be ending up. If the disc bounced off a wall and started falling, you'd know.

I don't see how people can't know about this feature. It's mentioned in the tips before loading CTF maps.

Hal did confirm that the translocator camera, due to netcode problems, has been completely removed from the game.

A lot of people hated the translocation altogether because they didn’t know how to counter it. If they removed the trans complete there would be a select group that would be very happy,….

Not me though, I love the transloc and the cam!

RIP.

It can be mutated out. UT99 didnt have it, deal with your gaming strategies without it.
You still have the TL. Any object in the engine can be treated as a camera. (console commands only on clientside only, no net) Question tho, does this affect the redeemer?

AFG34

It is very useful and makes the CTF that much more interesting. It should be back imo.

Yeah,...lol I guess so.

I guess what I mean is that for DM I never really used it(even if it was turned on). Seemed like it would have alot more benefit for CTF or ONS(gametypes I didnt play near as often).

Mostly CTF, I haven't seen an Onslaught server with TL on.. you're better off in vehicles anyway. Or you can teleport using the nodes.

Update:
Now that I tried the UT3 Trans (you can aquire it via the 'loaded' cheat in ShangriLa) I can definitely say that fixing the problem that caused the cam's removal should be put quite high on Epic's priority list, imo. The depth-perception of the disc's flight path is not that good, it's very hard to tell where exactly you will end up while it's in mid-air. For example, I tried to Xloc to the UDamage in ShangriLa and kept missing most of the time. One just can't tell how far away the disc is exactly. With the cam it was possible to land spot on where you wanted to be. The ability to spy on the enemy was quite handy as well, of course, but the now missing precision of mid-air translocating is the main reason I painfully miss the cam.
Please, Epic, try to fix the relating issue and give us the cam back! I really can't see why this should be so complicated, as the redeemer's remote-cam works flawlessly.

Didn't use the camera much in BR. Just goofing around I could put the trans disc on top of my head and run around viewing from the camera. Pretty funny stuff. Also when you manged to get it on your head and stay there you could press a key, can't remember which, and red smoke would flow from you to the opposing goal. Absolutely useless stuff but a fun novelty when goofing around. Pretty funny to watch someone running around with the disc on their head too.

trans cam was innovative and didn't break the game (unlike shield, adrenaline and dodge jumping)

I wonder if the problem was whether the disk would set on the ground correctly or sink in like the characters feet appear to. Perhaps if you tried to use the camera you would just get the inside view of a stone tile.
