..Any advice for noobs to get started? I have been doing sound recording for years and will probably focus on that for UT3... Does the editor help with sounds, or only maps, textures, skins etc? I've never used a UT editor so any basic info would be appreciated.

The CE version of UT3 has video tutorials so you could consider getting that. Tutorials for UnrealEd will soon appear online as well. I haven't seen the Roboblitz editor so I can't really tell but the basic workflow will probably be the same as in the previous UnrealEd versions so older tutorials should be able to get you started on the basics (rooms, texturing, ...).
Also, I've heard that Epic will open (a part of) the UDN (http://udn.epicgames.com) after the release of the full game. So that's pretty useful as well.

Get Roboblitz. Fun, challenging puzzle game with interesting physics, plus the Unreal Editor.

The unreal editors have always been my favourite. Take a week to learn the basics and get mapping!
Yes you can do almost anything in the editor (import music/sounds etc). It works differently to previous editors and more emphasis than ever is on outside assets (3D meshes) rather than BSP.
Roboblitz editor is ok for getting used to some fundamentals and playing around with kismet but the UT3 editor will be the 'real deal' because you NEED all the UT3 assets (textures, statics, sounds) to really start mapping properly for that game... which is why they can't really give the editor out seperatly because it wouldn't have the assets needed (though you could use it in blank canvas mode to get used to things I guess).
Most of all you need time and lots of research. I've been mapping for coming up ten years now (started with Unreal one in 98) and i'm still learning. UE3 does many things differently to previous so even for old mappers there is a new learning curve.
And just refrain from releasing the first thing you come up with ("A cube with 4 ramps, no light sources and every item"), we've all been there but really you have to expect to create a few 'test maps' before you start to make semi-decent ones.
Most important tip is to take your time, optimise well and design for gameplay rather than gimmicks (the last one was something I never did really but will do if I ever map for UT3). ;)

Nice to see a lot of names that I recall from the Mod scene when I was last using the editor.:) Had abit of a break from it unrealed, not intentionally, just circumstance. I have to say though I am very exited about the new editor as well as the game. I wonder how long it will be before we se the aformentioned square room packed with redeemers...theres allways a few of them. But this editor and the game raises the bar considerably, so it will be intersting to see if the community can make content, in anything like the quantity of UT2K3/4.
Either way ill be having dabble:)
Superb job as allways Epic, now give those devs a good rest, they have earned it.

hmm... getting back to mapping... I left it when UT 2k4 hit the stores... did some zark-like weapon mods and left it at that (we called them BinSlayers :D) and some map conversions but never released any originals...
maybe I will now, that I actually like another UT game :D

The Editor requires all the core files to be there. The editor is just a front end into all the content in the game files so it would have to be all together. There may be a way to use only the editor for the demo version, but it would probably be missing lots of stuff and might mismatch for the final.
