As there has been a lot of conversation lately about the release and reimplementation of a lot of DM and CTF maps, I would simply like to open the floor here for a discussion and possible collaboration in terms of creating or "re creating" some of the classics's from all the UT titles.

To soften the process, all mapping guru's if possible, please list below, map or maps you plan to attempting to recreate within the UT3ED. This may actually bring us closer to getting a list of maps coming to (if not included within the launch) UT3 per user creation.

I myself am currently working on (attempting) creation for some static mesh's for DM-Rankin, according to MR's comment "im sure someone will recreate it" i have assumed partial responsibility with doing so, any feedback or input will be appreciated. Ill keep you updated as progress is made

I'm guessing people have been using the RoboBlitz(sp?) editor in preparation for the UT3 one?

I hope there will be a good rankin remake, though I hope if there is one it gets accepted by people as THE remake so we don't end up with 10+ remakes all different enough to cause issues.

If I'm ever going to do a remake it's probably gonna be dm-1on1-davidm with a huge visual over haul, a remake should at least trying to do something different with a map, whether it's a major face lift, gameplay improvements or a completely different theme. You have been forewarned if you ever make a remake that's exactly the same as the original you will suffer the consequences.

Hopefully, I'll have my map ready for release after UT3 comes out. Been building it in roboblitz. Building the custom assets is taking a lot of time :(

I know this is probably not the place for requests, but (and you can see I'm gonna do it anyway! :D) I'd love to see someone recreate a map that I have only seen for UT99 called DM-EyeOfTheStorm. It was originally made by El Chicoverde in 2001 and used some Quake 3 textures. Here's a link to the original:

I plan to do an DM-Under map but nothing like the old ugly version. Much better visuals, perhaps something more castle themed, and better game play :D Why am I picking that map? Because I wish to do something small and simple to begin with :)

Remixing Hourence's Rankin is one of the many thing that's on my mind at the moment. I really appreciated it in UT2K4, trying it with the 'normal' player scale would be something quite different.

Im made trial maps for ut2k4... When i get abit bored of owning people in UT3 (probably 10 years from now) then ill make a CTF Lava Giant remake from ut99.

If I had time, I could do another HallOfGiants...(2K4 version in my sig)....but i'm looking forward to trying an original map.

Can't wait to get my hands on UT3 and the GOW editors!

1. This isn't meant as a flame or discouragement, but most remakes are never as good as the original, so why not simply make a new map, perhaps either themed or partially based on the layout of a classic. The majority of gamers are looking for something new, or know that there are issues with many previous generation maps so they won't play exact remakes.

2. I wouldn't recommend anyone who isn't familiar with UT3 start building maps in other UE3 games such as RoboBlitz. Do you know what the new scale is? Probably not. Which means that your brushes and/or assets will probably all be incorrect sized. For example, the demo Deck map that is included with the UE3 Licensee package is 85% scale of UT2004's Deck. If this is indicative of UT3's release scale, then assets need to be designed for that.

3. I have a few new WAR maps and three new "Classic" DM style maps (UT99/Q3A style design and play) planned and partially under development. I am also working on a UT3 mod with other people (which will hopefully be able to integrate simply as a new game type), that should be announced when we get a few more assets ready to showcase.

ID have to agree somewhat, Although i will remake 2 of my IG TDM Maps, Skyarena and halloween arena. Beyond that its all new stuff for me. Got a sick ass Stargate style map that i was going to release but it took me months to get the physics right. After my 2 ig mapes this baby gets rebuilt to the current engine. And i can guarrenty a lot of people are going to copy my transport system.

I honestly dont think Hourence has anything to do with UT3 as he never worked for Epic but for one of the studios making stuff for them. DGUnreal I have to agree and disagree about your comments on remaking maps. Sure people want new maps and a majority of the maps made should be new but players also want some of those old maps back to bring back the memories. Those old maps were their favorite in the old game so why wouldn't they want to play it in the new one? Sure a map can be remade badly but if it is done right then there is nothing wrong with it. I plan to make one remake just to get into the swing of things. I already know the UE3 editor pretty well, have seen and messed with Epics demo stuff, and got things planned out. For the remake I don't plan to keep the same level intact but make it exactly that, a remake. It will play mostly the same, look completely different, and feel a bit different but like you said it will most likely never be as good as the original. Even though in the case of Under it shouldn't be hard as it was obviously not designed by a real experienced mapper as most popular maps aren't.

I read the chat, i know that was said. But I also know that Hourence doesn't work for epic, so...

It doesn't really matter to me who makes the map. I was just making a suggestion because someone expressed his concern about multiple DM-Rankin's floating around without any one of them getting the status of THE DM-Rankin remake...

Asking doesn't hurt does it...? But will he be interested in remaking a map or will he be more interested in making some completely new map...

H is working on other UE3-based stuff.
He did a lot of maps for UT200x but has since been doing other work.
I can PM or email him and ask though.

I wasn't really saying that remakes shouldn't be done.
But I feel we have to be careful in this area as there is a lot of issues.
A lot of UT99 remakes didn't work well on UT2004 due to differences between the games, and I wouldn't doubt the same may happen with many of the UT2004 map remakes to UT3.
As I mentioned, a similar themed map or even copying most/all of the layout for a new map is viable.

IMHO if H did the remake it would probably have more acceptance in the community. As to whether he would be interested I will ask.

I hope we build a good SP community of the likes that Unreal & UT99 had - for the last year, maybe 2 I've not really wanted to build any new MP maps, I got the SP bug pretty bad & tbh I enjoy making story-telling maps more than just areas, even if that story is just a childish comedy. :p


If UT3 doesn't already contain all the ingredients you need for a full SP campaign (and I mean like Unreal, Unreal2, or Quakes 1, 2, & 4 here, not the offline component of UT3) then I'm sure SuperApe will oblige with a revamped OSMT toolset - but with all the focus that's going into the SP component of UT3, I'd be pretty surprised if we can't knock up something pretty cool straight out of the box.

Especially with all this talk of functions for 'encouraging' players to take on certain roles within large WAR maps, this sounds like it would make a great tool for SP mapping too. :)

I asked him about it and here is Hourence's response to a remake of Rankin:

"I haven't made a UT3 Rankin yet, and unless requested by Epic to do so, I don't plan to ever convert it either. I'm not too fond of conversions as people have certain expectations about a conversion, and it's near impossible to make a remake that will please all.
And besides, from a designer and artist point of view it's more fun to work on something new rather than to repeat something old."

So I expect we'll see a bunch of non-official Rankin-remakes by other people popping up after UT3 ships. :)

I'm considering conversion of Terra for UT3 if i can find the original Maya assets i made for my FlagPack2004 version.. I archived them, then put on a CD safe.. now i dont know where the CD is! :( and dont want to start again from scratch..

I encountered so many issue's with BSP going bad, collision issue and many other things while making the 2k4 version. It ended up not being the way i wanted it to.. vertex lighting sucks hard and i might be able to make the one i wanted.. if i can smesh it up more.

Slightly OT.. but the more i get into UED3 StaticMesh making/UV'ing.. it does require more time and effort.. but the results are worth it!!. The only downside is new people to the unreal editor are going to find it a hard. I'm sure we'll see a lot more maps that only use assets from the stock packages.

Goliath, Roughinery, Flux2, Squader, Spirit, Corrugation, Metallurgy

I'm not sure but Gestalt always seemed kinda mono texturized,
if it could be rethemed somehow, there might be some hope.


If I were to port my maps, I would do: DM-NinthGate, and DM-HauntedMansion
(although I hated using the hauntedmansion name, someone with better mappingskills could have done a way better job at doing it than me, but noone was using it, and didn't seem like anyone was going to, so I used it)

I'd love to do a Rankin remake, but it seems like a lot of work. Plus if I remade it the end result might not really be recognisable as Rankin at all. :p
I actually plan on doing a Curse remake now, seeing as how disappointed I was with UT2k3 and UT2k4's version of it. I plan to keep it simple visually, relying mostly on UT3's texture mapping functions instead of actual geometric detail, also to keep it true to the original. I plan to give it a brighter look than either UT1 or UT2kX, give it more of a feel of a mountainside hewn tomb as opposed to a dark dungeon, with maybe some windows near the amp area instead of torches.
After that I'll probably start making new maps... I have some finished CTF layouts I think will work well, although they're mostly made with dodgejumping in mind. Remodeling that will be interesting. I also plan to redo my own CTF-Junglepass to fix the serious issues that map had, and also because there's some images of what it could've been I can't get out of my mind.

Ps: Agreed with the normal mapping on flat surfaces - I can imagine myself using those functions more & more - hell I've seen loads of actual physical meshes that look much worse than a nice tex with decent normal mapping - I'm really looking forward to it tbh. :D


As an aside - when I got 2K4, I was into vctf mainly (still am) so I actually played Rankin, et-al much *much* less than most of you guys, so it's not overplayed to me, and all this hate directed towards remakes often flies right over my head.. :cool:

In fact, remakes (and even remakes of remakes) are some of my favourite maps to play on (Redrooms, Alleys-FBU, etc..), but in all honesty, I don't enjoy making remakes - I tired once or twice for 2K4 but always packed it in before the end for want of doing something more interesting (albeit less successful.. ;))

We at the dFb ut clan are planning to remake our UT 99 map into UT 3 as soon as we can get the editor in our hands and loaded up ! We have a whole team of mappers moders scriptors, etc.... just making stuff in UT 2004 so we can upconvert it into UT 3 asap !

Well, I remade 3 CTF maps to 2k4 that are fairly popular on our server... I know they are not EPIC's maps but worth mentioning, in keeping with the thread's title.

It seems there are people doing conversions of DM, ONS, and CTF maps... but no one has commented on Assault!

I expect myself or someone else from RTO will do Convoy and Fallen City (though there was a Fallen City like assault map in one of the conquest video segments a few months back, so this might not be necessary).

I wish I had the ability and patience to be able to make maps now days. I used to make maps for Quake1 back in the day but never contniued with it into the various games that followed in the years to come, I wish I had.

Anyway, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned a few more of the original UT99 maps...

Lets see a nice new Peak, StalwartXL, or Barricade. Original Phobos was awesome, the UT2004 version paled badly in comparison so lets see an updated version of the original. Deck17 mentioned that Deck16 was shutdown for maintenance, what better excuse than to say it was upgrading for UT3, bring back the slime deck!

Theres some old Domination maps that could work easily for CTF or Deathmatch... I'm not sure on its name but Gothic anyone? Or Turbine?

Spacenoxx has been mentioned, that was a great simple map I wouldn't mind seeing return. The likes of CTF Lava Giant and Face would be great as well.

What of Unreal1? Aren't there some DM maps there that haven't been used again? How about a Vortex Riker Ruins map? Or some of the other Na Pali areas we visited way back when? Even back then the scenery and ambiance gave and awesome atmosphere to the game, imagine what they could be today...

Better yet! Someone remake my cruddy old Quake1 maps! lol, I wish

I always remembered a map called Isle D'or or something like that. real simple DM map from UT. It was basically a large island barren of green but with some rock formations. The main feature was a simple tower in the middle. If I remember correctly the spawn points were all near the shore and the best weapons were higher up the tower, redeemer on top, so the fighters all gradually converged into each other.

And hall of giants if it hasn't been mentioned.

There was also one called Titan or Titan City I think... that was a very large map and heaps of fun, could easily work as vehicle CTF now.

Another DM one was called Station 24 I think, not the greatest of maps thrown out there but I loved its openness and simple feel, I'd love to see that turned into a UT3 map. DM Baykal, another large map that could easily be Warfare map now, DM Arcane Temple, DM Fetid... All good maps,

Hate to sound noobish, but I'm new in town in these parts. Definitely not new to UT or mapping, just UT mapping :P

I guess I'm apart of the Halo CE mapping community, but with the epic fail that is Halo 2 Vista, I decided that I need to move on, and having played the UT3 demo non stop for the past week, I'm definitely making the move to mapping for this liquid magma sex game. I'm bringing some people with me too ;)

Oh, I guess I should post some progress of the map me and my friend Tweek are making. Been in progress about a couple weeks now, he's modelling, I'm painting textures and unwrapping/skinning the level.

Some wip shots, just start a couple days ago, have been having some problems learning max (I'm a maya fanboy) which have impeded my progress. Quickly learning though. That's like, near one of the bases.

As you can see, my love of Halo has influenced the look of the map (considering it was meant to be for H2V) and I just hope M$ and their Ninjas don't get me for IP infringement or something. Well, at least all the textures are my designs (except the floor tile, just a placeholder).

Any thoughts/opinions?

p.s. **** render and only diffuse and bump maps applied atm (learning max)

im definitely doing some form of ctf dreary remake using all new meshes that ill make it 3dsmax.. such a great map. im going to wait to see what the 3dbuzz tutorials have to say but im thinking i will export the raw bsp from ut99 (minus the bits that i want to remodel-struts and beams etc), use this in 3dsmax to create all the meshes in one hit (not as one mesh though), and then import into ue3 and scale/texture/light/put stuff in as necessary!

havent decided whether i want to stay true to the original look or not, i was thinking there should be more windows with rain splashing on the outside, perhaps a couple of darkened silhouettes of 1000x scale darkwalkers strolling past, lit occasionally by a sudden stroke of lightning :0

I don't know what else at this moment.

I want to give myself enough time to work on JunkJitsu as it will require a lot of attention.

I've decided to port over some of my old UT2003/04 maps.

DM-KillBillyBarn, DM-CartwrightHall, and DM-December24th

I don't know what else at this moment.

I want to give myself enough time to work on JunkJitsu as it will require a lot of attention.

Anyway, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned a few more of the original UT99 maps...

Lets see a nice new Peak, StalwartXL, or Barricade. Original Phobos was awesome, the UT2004 version paled badly in comparison so lets see an updated version of the original.

Teddie is the one to speak to about DM-Peak.. his 2k4 version was awsome!!

Stalwart + StalwartXL i'm looking into those.

Phobos i might do, if time permits.. but since i got 2 CTF and 2 DM maps planned.. i got my hands full, plus learning the UT3 editor quirks

I would also second the request for Peak. :D Though I did love the remixed Healpod music you did...

@GromUT: I'd love to see Citadel in UT3 as well, appropriately tweaked for the new movement and weapons of course, and with a *****ing new visual theme. Dark and necrisy, perhaps.

Thanks. One of my favorite parts of development of that map was making the little old'time radio and doing the voice work for it and trying to tie the broadcast script I wrote into the theme of the map.

I think porting DM-KillBillyBarn would be a sweet move, as it looks amazing in UT2004 and with new engine its gona look heavenly. Hows work going on DM-TDB-JunkJitsu, its got to been around 2years in the making right ?. Aanyway hurry and finsh that sweet looking map, and if its as good as its looking convert it, K...
