How about show sparks instead of blood when a character takes gunfire? Then show blood if they don't have armor. And show blood on critical hits.

Very true. It doesn't look nice when you shoot armor and blood comes out and if you keep shootin bullets slowly blood keeps oozing out which looks stupid. I agree sparks fist but that too not stupid spatks like that of the bots in UT2k.
That sounds rather cool. A nice visual indication of your opponent's health.

Never thought of it that way but yes can be a cool way of indicating a persons health.

Nice idea.
Maybe sparks simply if you have armour, blood if you are low on health.
Armour + low on health could be both?

No not armor in that way. It's just when the persons health is above 30 then sparks. Below 30 is blood. The armor being talked about is the Player's model armor that should be sparking or whatever.

Bad idea... This game needs more blood. It's perfectly feasible that a bullet would hit body armor, GO THROUGH IT, and yet because most of it's inertia was absorbed by the armor didn't do much damage beyond your standard flesh wound... Which does bleed by the way.
I say the more blood the better.

Damn even you've got a valid point. The game does need alot of blood IMO. Seeing blood splatter is sorta fun. I'm not violent cause i don't look at the game in a realistic way cause i know it's just a game. But the point is blood is needed and blood on weapons is needed and different variations i.e realitic stains of blood and blood on walls etc is good.
PS: I repeat I am not violent. It's no big deal but fun though.
I'm not violent!

ok i reworded the 1st post with more blood/sparks balance
Would be cool if they gradually interpolated over to limping animations as the player's health wears down. The animation system already supports channeling and weighting, so all they need is a version of the walking and running animations where they limp...
As long as it doesn't affect the gameplay (i.e. movement speed) that sounds like a fine idea too.

No way. It would only really work with robot players, anything esle would be censorship.

Blood should splatter over the screen when u get a point blank kill, say with the flak cannon. That was such a cool effect in Gears of War - watching that game for the first time recently and i couldnt stop laughing while staring in awe at how real it felt! Amazing job epic - if UT3 is anything like the feel of that game i will be happy. :D

It would cause some of us to die though... Because while you're waiting for the blood to unobscure your view you've got some guy blasting you in your blind spot... Which by the way, because of the blood spatter, happens to be everywhere.
I like that effect too, but I wouldn't want to handicap myself for it.

Naa adds to the fun! OK yea i see your point - well maby this could happen with the impact hammer. Personally id like to see the chainsaw return it's awesome in GoW.

Don't get me wrong jonny... I think a bloody shower raining down on you after gibbing someone at close range is a great idea... But could we possibly keep it off of the screen?
I think that robots should bleed red fluid as well... You know, like the same color as transmission fluid... And then as a death animation have the robutt open his mouth with sparks and all kinds of electrical stuff flying out of his mouth and eyes right before he ASPLODES into a thousand pieces and rains red blood (remember: transmission fluid) on everyone within a 10 yard radius.

I like it. Sparks then Blood.
A good option for those that don't want blood. It would hard to make it believable and not irritating after a long time. Of course keep the option to turn it off completely too. Gibs kill my machine :\

Good idea, kinda like TAM in UT2K4. (when they have armor, the characters hit will show shield, if they dont it will show blood and no shield effect)

I'm not too sure about UT2K3 or 2K4, because I haven't payed close attention, but in Unreal Championship the Juggernauts would spark when you shot them, and they eventually bleed if shot more. They would spark exactly like the robots. I thought that was really cool, cause it makes sense with them having massive armor and all.

When i first read the title, i thought this was gonna be stupid, but now i know what ur talking about, it sounds cool. They do the same thing in FEAR, when you wear Kevlar and get shot, you hear it crack and spring, and blue sparks come out, it's really cool. The armor in that game goes really quickly though, so maybe make the armor just a tad better.

i think your all a bit obsessed with gore. The original idea was brilliant... if only sparks repelled off the shield it would feel extremely satisfying when you see you've finally broken through it.

I know what you mean, i like gore in games too, don't know why, just makes it more real... i dunno.
Still, this sounds like this would be a great mutator, if it wasn't implemented first hand in the game (which is a given).

How about both! The sparks indicate that the armor is being hit and the blood indicates that the weapon fire is penetrating the armor. On a side note if there are robots like in UT2004 there should mainly be sparks with battery acid/oil like they did back then.
One thing I hope they put in is some great sounds of metal being hit. I always liked that feature in Quake 3 Arena. It was a great indicator that you just inflicted damage when not in view of your opponent. This would give you a hint if you lobbed a grenade around a corner. You would hear a metallic clank and know if you hit the guy or not. Something like this would be great.
Same type of thing for vehicles which I believe they did in 04.
But sparks only for players with the shield pickup.
