True question, not looking for the internet warriors to lynch me. Was there a big problem with the way the ranked matches were being played? Were that many ppl pissed because of buddies hooking up in Ranked?
Myself I liked it, ya got owned at times...but at least when you were with your buddies there was a sense of unity, tactical reasoning and teamwork...randoms not so much....Epic you gave us a taste for a team based leaderboards :D ...blame that guy who does the lobbies, not us  ...J/K

thanks for the clairity on the matter...i didn't know this.
P.S. If Epic would clarify the change in Ranked to the rest of the public has to do with MS policy, im sure there wouldn't be as many fingers being pointed at them....just a thought.

Fingers are being pointed because we had high hopes for a better system to play with friends. Other companies aren't held to m$ rules because they created their own ranking system. Epic didn't have the time to do the same. I'm certain Epic wants everyone to be happy little gamers, this will all blow over in time. Or maybe we will all be playing something else a short time from now.

This was covered awhile back in the forums (the posts are gone now.) There are still some articles floating around on it like this one from joystick:

Does Saint's Row have a party system (invites and all that jazz) for ranked matches + TrueSkill somehow? That is really odd!

I would love to keep this conversation going but disscussing other games and comparing them in here is not allowed.

ok ok wait how does that not make sense thats the only way trueskill works
it picks a player who has roughly the same skill as you and throws you in
how does picking the game you join work with trueskill? it dosnt gow dosnt have trueskill no matter how much they advertise it on the leaderboards

No matter what way you look at it the common denominator in most of the threads and posts about the new "raped" rank matches....is that ppl want to a party system that incorporates a individual and/or team based leaderboard. Odds are it won't be around until GoW 2. This sucks ...its almost like you got your first taste of Playboy and then have to go back to the Sears bra/panty section

When joining a custom game it doesn't check your TrueSkill to allow you in, however everyone who joins thereafter from a quick match is checked against the normalized mean of the skill of the players in that room. The issue with host names brought this to a head, because one team would be comprised entirely of hand picked people with various TrueSkill levels -- then quick match would bring in random folks. So you would start with something like:
Cogs:
Alice - 60
Bob - 40
Locust:
Randy - 60
Chad - 40
Matchmaking would try to grab a few people at "50" (or so) to fill in the gaps. However, once they join the room Alice and Randy (60s) both go Cog. Bob is told to go Locust because Norbert (Alice's friend is coming). Which gives this:
Cogs:
Alice - 60
Randy - 60
Norbert - 60
Locust:
Chad - 40
Bob - 40
Mulligan - 50
Now matchmaking needs to find two more players. Whatever it chooses can't stop the disparity in skill created between the two sides. The probability of Locust winning deminishes and the Cogs pwn everyone they play with and keep getting higher skill ranks.
Turning off the host name isn't the "end all" solution here, however it makes it more difficult to get into the situation described above, and hopefully keeps each team closer to the 50/50 chance of winning. A game in which all players use "quick match" is the still likely to have the highest chance of being dead even in terms of skill.

Microsoft is actually behind TrueSkill. They created it to deal with issues they perceived in the Halo 2 matchmaking system. AFAIK, all games coming to XBL (certainly all MS games) will be using it.

Funaki, I'm not sure I could totally understand your post -- no offense intended. I do agree that there should be some transparency in what this "policy" is and how other developers are implimenting (or planning) things which, on the surface, seem to go against what is publicly known about it. I disagree that Epic is lazy -- they have done a stellar job with both GoW and UT. There are some credible reasons for the decisions they make in reguards to the multiplayer aspect of this game.
