View Full Version : Gears of War licensed stuff!

We keep getting questions about where folks can buy Gears of War merchandise. We've made a few partnership deals that we're really excited about, and those details are below. I mean, how cool is it that I can buy a Gears hoodie at the mall... we're just so happy with the reception this game is getting.

So you know, we took a major hand in developing these products. We co-authored the strategy guide and drew the maps, did all the writing and layout of the art book, you name it. The faceplates, clothes, etc. are all co-designed with Epic using our game art. Our art director (JerryO), lead designer (CliffyB), and I approve prototypes of every product before anything is made. So between that approval process, and picking only top-notch partners, we're confident this is all cool, quality stuff.

New Line Cinemas (http://www.newline.com): We've just announced a motion picture deal for Gears of War. How cool is that?

Brady Games (http://www.bradygames.com):
Awesome strategy guide available at game stores, book stores, Amazon, etc. We also did a collector's edition strategy guide that includes a gorgeous art book. And we've done video strategy guides that are now appearing on Xbox 360 Marketplace. For more information visit www.bradygames.com.

Headline Entertainment (http://www.headlineentertainment.net):
Apparel and accessories including hoodies, tees and novelty accessories. Available at Hot Topic, Diamond Comics, Hasting's, Fred Meyer, Anchor Blue, Spencer Gifts, and Target. For more information visit www.headlineentertainment.net.

MadCatz (http://www.madcatz.com):
Xbox360 console accessories including console crates and faceplates. Exclusive designs available at Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, Hot Topic and Blockbuster with additional peripherals available soon. For more information visit www.madcatz.com.

BioWorld (http://www.bioworldmerch.com):
Accessories including headwear, belts, and bags available beginning December 2006 at Hot Topic, Spencer Gifts, Transworld and Virgin Megastore. For more information visit: www.bioworldmerch.com

Sumthing Else (http://www.sumthing.com): They'll be releasing a Gears of War soundtrack CD. We've just inked the deal so it'll be a little while before those are in production.

Sony BMG (http://www.sonybmg.com): We're working with Sony to develop some super cool new ring tones based on the Gears universe.

Trends Posters: We're working with Trends to make Gears posters available. We'll likely start with something like the box cover, and then we'll consider expanding into other areas.

I'll update this thread when we announce any new products. We definitely have a few more ideas in the works.

Can't find anything gears releated on the bioware, that's fair enough considering it doesn't come out until next month.

Also i think your headline entertainment link is wrong and also you have put the madcatz link in twice.

Also love to see a game like battlefield, with 12 vs 12, if you jumped into a seeder, you could fire the drones out, and then guide them though the sky..

I've also been scavenging the internet trying to find any news about a possible soundtrack from the game. (As its the best I've heard in years, possibly EVER!) Released on Dual Disc with 5.1 on one side would be great! ("Mad World" and Megadeth's "Gears of War" would make good bonus tracks on the regaular CD side) I do have the score to the film "Predator" that I play in my stereo during Multiplayer that really ups the whole experience! I'd recommended everyone to look around for that...

I agree, dp. McFarlane currently makes plastic "statues" rather than poseable action figures. Another company that has produced awesome figures is Sota Toys (Chronicles of Riddick & Tomb Raider lines). The amount of articulation along with the fantastic sculpts should make them contenders.

I guess my "action figures" are more for display, as I don't usually play with them. I do take them out of the box, though... So I'd be content with either company, as long as they actually look like the characters.

OK so through this thread here is a common list of "choice items"

Items with multiple requests:
1. Figurines / Action Figures / Miniatures
2. Clothes - Shirts, Hoodies, etc.
3. Posters
4. Gun Replicas - airsoft or even just models
5. Cog Tags (metal) - could be jewelry or even make keychains...

Other Items:
1. Cell phone / Ipod Casings
2. Soundtrack (ambient music in game is sweet)

--------------
A few more things I would like to throw in:
1. PC Skins (just because it's not on PC...doesn't mean my PC can't rock GoW style!
2. Gears of War CGI / Animated series or Movie (Background info and clear up the storyline. Basically, "what builds up to the game start")
3. G.O.W. Headset for Xbox Live -- kind of like the Plantronics Halo 2 thing but G.O.W. style and even build it to look like the style of the game.
4. G.O.W. Controllers or Controller Skins.
5. Grenade refridgerator magnets. (Girlfriend thought of this one...LOL)

The cool thing is about marketing this kind of stuff...there are at least 3 possibilities with each item.
1. Gears of War over all.
2. Cogs theme.
3. Locust theme.

Hell the toy gun replicas (nerf would be cool...) alone would be like...
10 possibilites (including grenade and Hammer of Dawn)

Hammer of Dawn could be like a Giant Laser pointer with a sound device that makes the "warming up" and "locking on" sounds.

A lot of it depends on how far Epic wants to take it, also it depends on "who gets a piece of what pie..."

I'm going to make a replica of a Hammerburst, to use as a conversation piece in the home. I've already almost finished the blueprints/working plan, and the construction will start soon. Lancer next.

Officialy licensed gun replicas would be much better, of course. The chances of them actually being made are rather low, though.

I've been on the search for GOW-related merchandise to serve as party prizes for a GOW party that I'm throwing in mid-Jan. I think MS or its licensed/lack of licensed companies that dropped the ball on the merchandising aspect of GOW. Retailers should have been filled to the brim with apparel, hats/caps, stickers, etc. (ala Bungie's Store with Halo-related goods). Instead, only the usual faceplate fare was available. The fact that GOW was going to be a success was inevitable in hindsight. What gives?!? Was it the retailers' apprehension on ordering Gears-related merchandise, or was this due to that lack of licenses being granted? The barrage of goodies that were purported to be offered never came to fruition. What a shame of a missed opportunity.:(

I think there should be GoW books that tells what happen on Emergance Day.

What happened on E-Day was that Marcus left his position because he got a distress call from his father. He came too late to save him, though. When he returned he was put in prison and seen as a traitor.

D4mn. 2 million copies sold, and virtually zero merchandise. To say that someone dropped the ball, is a HUGE understatement. What's up with the one company that's listed as having t-shirts? The can't even show me what the real shirt looks like! They have a poorly photoshoped pic of the shirt with the Omen logo. Sad. And what does a guy have to do to get some lousy decals of the Crimson Omen? Geez. Something so simple, and nada. I'm having to resort to outside channels to have some made. Sad.

After watching the behind the scenes stuff about how MS gave Epic so much Sh!t about putting the chainsaw into the game, you'd think someone needs a good a$$ kicking for not showing the same aggressive mentality when it comes to marketing merchandise.

Hi
I just wanted to clarify are these marcus fenix statuettes currently on ebay actually fake as i've read many an article that states they are and they aren't on the list of merch. If they are i suggest epic get in contact with ebay as all the sellers claim they are official. and it annoys me to see people fooled into paying £80 (bout $120) for fake rubbish. Plus all the other violations of copyright are there lol branding on the box etc
Cheers
P.S if ths has already been covered sorry but can't be bothered to go through all these pages :)

Actually those figurines were made in limited quantity for some sort of marketing promotion Microsoft was running with a retailer in the UK. They are limited edition, no more will be produced and they won't be offered for sale. There's nothing we can do to stop people from selling them on e-Bay. We had not seen the final product prior to release - hence the stories you might have read that they were fake - but they are legit.

Fritz
01-17-2007, 11:39 AM
Plus those figures are only 6" tall so I'm not sure how detailed they are. $120 seems a bit much for that. Especially when I'm counting on someone getting a license to produce higher end collectibles. :D

I have to say that the stuff that has been produced as licensed is pretty lame. I mean the most basic thing a black t-shirt with the crimson omen is messed up with a stylized version. Where's the black caps with the crimson omen. Where are the die cut/laser cut crimson omen stickers that we can stick on our cars? Where are COG tags? Not lame Dog tags that have the gears logo but actual gear shaped tags? Where are the Mcfarlane (only decent maker) action figures? C'mon! WE WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON YOUR STUFF AND AS A RESULT OF THAT PROMOTE YOUR GAME/COMPANY. Make this easy for us. HELP ME HELP YOU.

Someone get a hold of Sideshow Collectibles and work out a deal for them to make Premium Format figures and 1/4 scale Maquettes under license.

Then someone contact Quantum Mechanix and work out a deal with them to make replicas of the weapons.

Here's a great idea for a Gears tie-in stuff: Nerf rifles based on Gears of War weapons.

Before you start laughing, check out the design of the current Nerf stuff, especially the N-Strike Longshot.
http://www.hasbro.com/nerf/default.cfm?page=nstrike_blasters

My kid just brought one, it's over 3 1/2' long and really cool. I'm thinking of buying one for myself and covering it with grey or camo tape and stick some Gear of War stickers on it to jazz it up. ( I already have a Maverick and a Firefly, my kids learn to respect a little Nerf firepower).

At the least, Epic and Hasbro could team up to develop limited editions of the current Nerf line molded in Gears-like colors. Tell me you would buy one?!!

BTW - I don't work for Hasbro or any toy company. I'm just a geek-dad. Also, my kids are too young to play Gears of War.)

I'd just be happy with a Crimson Omen decal, and the figures in the same line as Halo's. 8". with some good detail that I could put on my desk. Not too big, yet not to small to go un noticed.

FenixGirl

Dear Epic: We love you, but we need gears stuff!

You guys should look into making Fathead graphics of the gears - those life size wall stickers?

And since you have some kind of planned partnership with Hot Topic, how about GOW piercing accessories? Crimson Omen tongue ring anyone? I'm serious: I want to get my neck pierced and I don't think anything would look better than 2 crimson omen screws instead of the little ball screws.

I'm guessing since the game is rated MA lunchboxes are out? I'd buy one though.

There are so many easy things you guys could market: GOW lipgloss, candy, bubblebath...I would totally buy GOW bubblebath. How about a bigger art book (with pix of the "new" Marcus used in the game/later promos...hint hint). We want more T shirts & hoodies, and some people want hats like Marcus's with the Epic logo.

I am STILL waiting on my doll..er.."action figure"...too! I can't wait any longer!

Am I the only girl getting blue b*lls over wanting more Gears stuff?

Okay, so I get the email update to this thread that shows a post. I glance to the heart of the post and totally bypass who wrote it.

So there I am reading about this person getting their neck pierced, and I think, "freakish, but WTF, that's cool." Then I read that the same person wants bubblebath, and I'm thinking, "wow, a pierced neck, and bubblebath. That's kinda f'd up." Then I read that they want lipgloss, and I think "this person's SO ghey, AND they want to pierce their neck. WTF? How NOT stereotypical!"

Then I read the word "girl" in the GT, and I'm thinking "THANK FREAKIN GOD!"

So my question is this. Why was I so shocked at the fact that some ghey guy might want to get his neck pierced, and buy bubblebath and lipgloss, but when I find out it's a female, I'm totally cool with it? Is there something wrong with me now that I'm in my mid thirties that I think the world is fine with a girl that wants a neck piercing, but something's totally F'd up that a ghey guy wants his neck pierced? For a minute there I was thinking that I needed to lock my kids in the closet until all was right with the universe, then I found out it was a female that said all of this, and it appears things are okay with the world.

D4mn, I've got issues.

I'm really cool with it. I've got piercings and tattoos, so I'm not hypocrit. I just thought it was really f'd up thinking "what's this world com,ing to when a ghey guy wants his neck pierced AND lip gloss?!" I'm hardly homophobic, but that was just too wierd. Again, something must be wrong with me if it's not wierd that I'd think it was okay for a woman to want those things.

To anyone interested,
We are a family that lives out in the country and we love to play Gears of War. Out here we don't have access to high speed internet; but that's okay because we have six 360's system linked throughout our house where we play three COGs vs.three Locusts just about every day. For Christmas my boys asked if we would be able to find them each a set of COG tags. We looked everywhere but were only able to find the ones on Ebay that look like cheap plastic dog tags with the Gears of War symbol on them. That wasn't what they were looking for. Using one of our bigger screen HD monitors, my oldest son and I made a machinist drawing of the first COG tag found in the prison. Zooming in on it we were able to see the details of the words inscribed as well. We had a metal fabricator laser cut a scaled down version of the tags (if we made them according to scale they would have been rediculously large. Have Marcus stand next to them while playing Dom and you can see how large they really are). They are made out of stainless steel. We have a local engraver that is able to put all the information of the tags that we want. Their tags have C.O.G., social security number, name, birthdate, religion. We now have four sets left but we can't get a hold of someone at Epic to answer our question regarding selling these last four sets (we had 10 sets made to reduce the cost. We only have four sets to get rid of). We don't want to make a profit off of these. We could easily make thousands of sets and sell them, but we know we won't get the permission for this. All we want is to sell the last few we have just to make back some of the money that we spent to make them. If anyone knows what the legality is regarding the sale of these please let us know. We have tried to contact Epic by Email, but we don't get our Emails returned (which I think is there policy anyway). If anyone is interested in seeing what the tags look like you can look at them at http://home.earthlink.net/~millersons/. If anyone replies to this message, thanks in advance for the information or comments.

IMTHEONEKILLINU
01-31-2007, 05:03 PM
So let me get this straight, you made 10 sets of COG tags, with your sons' social security numbers and D.O.B.'s on them, and now you want to sell 4 sets of the initial 10?

Um...if I were evil I might want to purchase all four sets because I'd really like to go apply for a car loan, and a zillion credit cards using thier personal information.

Now if you're saying that only your sons' have their personal info on them and the remainder are blank then I'd say A) you're quite brave allowing your children to walk around displaying their personal and highly valuable information like that, and B) then aren't the 4 remaining sets simply bicycle sprockets on chains?

FamilyofGears
01-31-2007, 06:12 PM
Um... maybe if you were evil you would buy someone else's social security number and birthdate in order to do the things that your mind somehow came up with in your supposed hypothetical situation; but, obviously, the tags are blank. We aren't so stupid as to sell personal information about our children. Regarding the "walking around and displaying": they aren't allowed to take these out of the house. They were made for them as a display/play gift for home. Regarding the bicycle sprockets: Sure, go type it in on Ebay, Google, whatever. You won't find anything like it. These were measured to scale assuming certain lengths of the boots of the COG soldiers. They would hardly make it as useful gears in an actual machine.

We went with the first COG tag found in the prison in the large open area after Dom asks whether you want to go straight into the fight or go through the training first. We have a large screen HD monitor that allowed us to obtain a great deal of detail when the tags were looked at through the over the shoulder view. We also made a machine drawing of the cog on the soldier's armour (it was rounded on the teeth) as well as the crimson omen cog but without the skull; we never had either of them manufactured.

Shadowchild,
In lieu of Mr. imtheonekillinu's rude comments and your kindness and appreciation of the tags, we would like to send you one of the four tags that we have for free. We are in California too. We did not come on to this site in order to receive inconsiderate comments. After receiving that first post we were wondering what kind of forum we had gotten ourselves into (being that this is the first forum we have ever been in). We only came to this site to find others who appreciated the game as much as we do, and with the hopes of finding fans of the game who would like to have a set of tags to show their support for such a fine piece of art as Gears of War. So, if you would like to Email us your name and address we will be going into town tomorrow and we will drop off the tags at the post office for you (again, we do not want to charge you for shipping or for the price of the tags themselves. We just want you to appreciate the tags).
Sincerely,
FamilyofGears

That's a fantastic idea, FamilyofGears! I was looking into commissioning a few COG tags myself because my buddies & me have started a LAN league with Gears. We have made the commitment to have a GOW LAN party once every month with the second one coming up next weekend. We're a group of working professionals with an average age of 34 yrs. old & absolutely love Gears! I had purchased several Gears-related merchandise from lanyards, pins, faceplates, tattoos to the promo dog tags (which you've seen on eBay) & passed them out as prizes at the first LAN party kick-off. You always needs incentives to keep it interesting! Hehe. Nevertheless, our first bash was an absolute success! How cool would it be to have an actual replica of a COG tag?!? Would you please PM me a few pics of what your tags look like, so I can get the ball rolling on commissioning my own? Thanks in advance & welcome to the forum!

Sure, I dont' have a problem with the idea, and the ingenuity is impressive. I only went so far as to find somoene to make me Gears decals, but then again, that's all I wanted.

That being said, I didn't realize however, that FoG was so uptight as to really take offense to my comments, and I suppose I could have simply come and pointed out the obvious flaws in their post and told them they should be a bit more specific, but oh well, some people are just thin skinned I suppose. Maybe it's a good thing that I didn't call "them" names when it appeared (from the post) that they may have personal information on those tags.

On the flip side, my apparent insensitivity has gotten you a free pair of those tags, so you should thank me. :)

FamilyofGears
02-01-2007, 03:27 PM
Mr Imtheonekillingu,
I think calling someone thin-skinned and then saying that you aren't calling someone names is an "obvious flaw" and is obviously hypocritical, don't you? Besides, why is wearing personal information on a tag so wrong. Do you have a personal problem with every Officer and Enlisted personel in our armed forces? After all they wear that same personal information every day. I understand that these aren't G.I. stock but nevertheless, the elderly wear personal I.D. bracelets (some contain all thier personal/health/insurance information) and many children wear them as well. We all carry personal I.D. information on us everyday in many forms. We didn't come to this site to be ridiculed. We only came here to share with others of like mind regarding an excellent piece of art such is Gears of War.

But, if we're so "uptight" for answering your original post in the manner that we did (or answering ShadowChild for that matter) then it appears that you have increased your hypocrisy to the next tier by being "offended" by what we said and still persuing your charade. But, if you say that you weren't offended by what we said then your obvious name calling that you say "that it's a good thing that you didn't call" us was proof in itself.

And by the way, your insensitivity wasn't just apparent.. it was obvious. We are new to this site. The very first post regarding what we had written was filled with sarcasm. And sarcasm, as any student of Aristotilian Rhetoric will tell you, is never meant to be sensitive toward the one whom it is meant for.

Do we really need to keep going back and forth like this? We didn't come here to attack you, but you took the initiative and now you seem to want to carry on a prolonged battle of words with us. Can't we just move on and stop the child's play once and for all? If anything we've said in any one of our postings offended you then we are very sorry. As our first posting can speak for itself, we never in any way, shape, or form meant to bring offence to anyone here.

OMG you guys are gonna get me in trouble! I'm at work (cube city) and laughing my A$$ off! YES I'm a normal girl, hence the name - not a freaky guy. Don't worry!

I just know there are a few other ladies on here, and I am SURE a lot more female fans out there in the world who would totally go for some of the..um..less conventional itmes. I was just thinking how it can't take that much effort to get little items branded - I mean with what places like Hot Topic have done with Spongebob stuff and Alternative band stuff. OK some of that is a little over the top, but I'd be all over the bubble bath. I mean, it could be like Emulsion, and there could be a Locust version & a Gears version: buy both & you can make them have fights in the tub!

OK here's another idea - how about a tshirt in dark gray or camo that says COG in white or black - a la the ARMY shirts? Or how about some readily-available posters with the promotional images on them?

Nicely done Familyofgears.

It's next to impossible to try to communicate on an internet board without some King of the World chiming in on how stupid they think you are.

And apparently you didnt check the first page of this thread, the first POST of this thread, with all the links on it. There are COG shirts already.

And IMTHEONE, yeah, you got a point...THANKS!!! :D <3 Of course, I probably shouldnt be saying that until I actually get them...

FoG, I dont mean to be rude, but I just have to ask: when you say "we", are you speaking in the "royal" tense (that is, speaking for all whom you represent) or are you skitzo? Just wondering :)

Racefan, I think the tags outdo your stickers :p

FamilyofGears
02-02-2007, 04:31 PM
ShadowChild,
As per our PMs, I think you know that it is my wife and I that write all the letters and posts. If we were using the "we" in the "royal tense", and we thought of ourselves that highly we would probably use the "We" instead. I'm sorry, we thought you'd be little kinder to us since we showed nothing but kindness to you. But, I guess backstabbing and cliques can be found in just about any environment. The tags were sent out yesterday morning, just as we told you they would be. We (not in the royal tense) hope you enjoy them. And, by the way, I'm sure you know by our PMs that we are not
skitzo(sic).

Racefan33,
Thanks for the comments. There are different metals available, as well as different coatings (PVD, etc.). We tried to make our look exactly like the first ones seen in the prison level. They too have the marred, worn appearance just like these if you aim at them while they are in your shadow (using an HD monitor with 1080i).

I have but two things to say.

One, I'm a former Marine. I'm fully aware of the "personal information" on a dog tag. My point was simply that I wouldn't trust a child with the ability to walk around with such information.

And to avoid hurting anyone's feelings any further, I'm sure that your children are plenty trustworthy and wouldn't dare take carrying such information around their necks, lightly, but there are those in life that are morally unsound and might use such information for purposes other than intended and who knows, those individuals might lurk on these forums.

Two, lighten up. Life's too short.

I'm all for figures, but my only problem with McFarlane would be that traditionally, they have no articulation.

I have several Series One HALO figures on my desk at home and at work, and the nice thing about them is that I can pose them. I'd vote for McFarlane if they made a posable version. If not, then I'd sacrifice some detail for a figure that could be posed.

The only other thing is that I'd prefer an 8" figure. I think someone once posted that they wanted a 12" or larger figure. That's too big for my desks, so I vote for 8.
