View Full Version : Map streaming (no loading screen) vs. Map voting

How can that work?
Do you vote before the match ends? That would be a bit distracting. And if you vote after the match ended map preloading doesn't help you much.

Good point, I've been wondering the same thing.

Just because we don't have significant loadtimes anymore, doesn'T mean we don't have pauses after the core is destroyed/the last flag captured/the last plyer killed.
Look: In Ut/Ut2k3/UT2k4 there are pauses after the match ends, before the server and clients load the next map.
Why shouldn'T be there pauses before the streaming begins???????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????
EDIT:
forgot 5 of these: ?????
EDIT 2:
To turn the logic* around:
If you set up a server with mapvoting: How can the clients start streaming before you even voted the next map and neither the server nor the clients know what to stream???????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????
*) I don't know if logical thinking is understood here. But I try anyways.
Maybe you vote at the start of the match, for the next map.

Its nothing magical about it.
In UT2004 when a game ends and the next map loads everybody gets "thrown out"
In UT2007 (thanks to the streaming) you will NOT get thrown out during the map load.
After a game ends you will be able chat, switch teams etc WHILE the next map is loading.
Im surprised this is still confusing people.
Edit: The only difference with map voting enabled i can see is that no map will load until the vote is over.

That's why I said that I try it with logic although it might seem useless. :p
You registered on this forum (INATARI apparently) in 2000 and are surprised????? I am surprised....

Well i was born with this ONE knowledge and that was about Epics Streaming tech in a future game called UT2007.
The rest of the world, personal hygiene , social contact, and how bush could get reelected is a big mystery to me ;)

Also, I don't think there will be any black loading screen with the server address like in '04. Then you can still chat. Maybe the map will transform at the end of map voting? Just a conjecture.:D

Well being able to chat while the map loads is certainly an improvement but far from what "streaming of next map in the background" implies.

That is what I was asking in the first place. What is the benefit of having the "streaming-the-next-map-in-the-background-while-voodoopriest-is-still-owning-fugerstef" technology when most of the servers out there will have some sort of mapvoting active.
Maybe you vote at the start of the match, for the next map.
Thought it bears repeating.

why do we just make a master map holding mutiple bases for about 8 or more teams, all the vehicles, all weapons, and etc.
people come and go as they please the game never ends etc. kinda like an MMORPG style map/ world

I think the voting should be close to the result, i.e. vote now, play the resulting map in a few seconds.
Not: vote now and play the resulting match after that 1.5 hours battle on Dawn.
3/4 of all the voting players would have left during that match being replayced by people that do NOT want to play RedPLanet.

Wasn't that what Warfare was all hyped up to be, before realism came to planet Earth?

There will be a small times between the last voted map and the next map to come, I guess. I guess the way the map are loaded will also be smoother and all. Anyway.
Who the hell is stretching the forum screen on this thread? Omg its annoying.

Seems to me literally all streaming does is remove the loading screen; it doesn't remove the wait before entering a map.

Umm well heres a simple answer, maybe there is no map voting. Perhaps servers get a choice of random, list top to bottom and list bottom to top. I do like the idea of map voting but it doesnt always work well in practise, probably better for bigger gametypes than DM. The best variety of voting from players Ive seen to date is on invasion servers.

Exactly!
While its streaming we can discuss the previous game and (hopefully) adjust the teams so that the next map will be less uneven and more fun.
Its a very small change but it can greatly change the gameexperience for the better.

Things could work like they do in CS source, with map voting during play
little screen pops up at side and askes u to press number for corresponding map that you want to vote for.
