I think its a good idea, just like the TimeShift beta test. People can report bugs to Epic before the game is out, give feedback on the gameplay and maps. Then, theres the other side of it. It would instantly get overfilled with too many people wanting in.
Or maybe something else where more experienced users (or Senior Members on the forums) would get a chance to participate. Or something. :p
Thoughts?

Deeeeeeemmmooooo.(Demo) And I think Epic said they already have enuf people testing UT2007 with different specs blah blah blah......
And just because you POST a lot in the forums doesn't mean your an experienced player.

yup your are right Jeff say it on Games Convention in Leipzig last month. it will donīt give a public beta test
Given that most people are incapable of properly reporting/testing bugs I wouldn't want Epic to release an 'open beta'.
Most 'volunteers' would simply use it as a demo ... and at best whine about how the game sucks simply because it's different or that it crashes even though they were warned that it was a freakin' BETA.
At this point I would take a room of any level with any weapon, but Senior Members only, lol.I've played them all since day one,but I guess I am not that important cuz I am playing or mapping most of the time instead of posting.:(
They should have called this game UT2008.This way when it did release early or on time,we would loved them instead of calling it 2007 and continually pushing it back making me want to drive down there w/my bat.
I remembering hearing and seeing June 06,Then October 06,then New Year 07,now we are at the first half of 07.:(
Magazines, websites, and stores should not be allowed to post any date whatsover if Epic has not released it.
yeah I know,patience.
Hmm, voted yes simply because it'd be awesome, even though I'm confident it won't happen.
I've participated in an open beta once, and even though most people indeed participated because they wanted a glimpse of the game, it did in fact end up solving 1 major issue with the first patch, which was totally overlooked.
In the end tough I believe it won't have a major impact, so it's perhaps best to not do it.. still, "yes" is the only thing I can get myself to vote ^^

plus if there was a public beta think about all the different input they would get. some people would want pubtastic stuff, some would want the lame pubtastic stuff that you only want to deal with once in a long while when playing (like the AS race maps or the AS temple trial maps or some of the really bad theme maps), then you would have some people who want stuff for competition (like brightskins and hitsounds)
Epic has done a decent job so far. i think the demo will really allow us to see what is going on.
I dont care tbh,as long as we get a demo so i can check it on my system i realy dont care about beta testing.

Umm sorry guys but Id prefer epic to do all the testing inhouse or what ever they do to make it work ;)
I just trust their judgement on features, although it would give them a chance to iron bugs from different system specs and perhaps engine tweaks for some extra fps I dont think itd be worth the time going through all those needless feature requests hehe.
Lucky most of the discussions here are half decent so far :p

I'd like to beta-test and feedback on admin/server config functionality. That's one aspect that doesn't get as much attention as it could.
With my gamer hat on I'd be happy to help - but it would really be difficult to beta test and not just play.
Testing is a real skill. I did testing as a full time job for a year on business applications and got a name as the person who could break (find the problem) with anything.

Epic has never made public beta test with its games and I'm very sure there will not be a 2k7 public beta.
I remember one of the Epic employees saying that they won't hold any open beta tests, thereby trying temper the chance for leaks as much as possible.

I voted No.
It'd spoil the surprise and first experiences of the game for me.. Demo, sure thing. Little sneak peek of how things are gonna be.. but the whole game handed to me to test for bugs, no. I'd rather wait for the final game.

Thats a really good point there, I always prefer the demo's that dont have all the weapons. Most of the ones with all of them in a map or by using a cheat kinda ruin the surprise. Im really looking forward to that feeling when I play the full game, thats one thing about hl2 that kinda ruined it for me I had a friend that insisted showing me every little piece of footage they had. By the end of the game I was bored because Id seen it, been there done that :p

I had to vote no.
An open beta would put Epic under some pressure to "change/tweak" things based upon a vocal minority and feedback. I'd rather the game had a more coherent vision and direction than that.

No to a public beta. Yes to a private, invite only beta.

+1

But it should be server owners. Server's should be able to test stability BEFORE the demo comes out :)

Well, maybe you.How can I contest a person who replies level headed to nearly everyone,(sets a good example btw)has a great sense of the game, and almost maxed out the post cap on these forums? :p
Just send me some demos and screenies then.

It won't happen, Epic was too nervous to use all 6 hardware threads of the Xbox360 CPU because Gemini-renderer was too unstable. Do you honestly think if they refuse to show Gears at E3 using the new renderer they allegedly had for a while but could POTENTIALLY crash -- if they'll go and give a Beta to anyone and everyone?
All we need is for Midway to take this release seriously and promote it. Betas will serve no purpose than give us fun before release.

That gets a definite +1 from me.
I'm worried that Midway will do as dire a job as I felt Atari did for UT2004.

i agree with those of you that say most users are incapable of reporting bugs they simply use it as a demo and disregard the bugs/complain about them.. however for ppl like me i beta test for Microsoft and many other large software company's im well aware of the protocol of reporting bugs :)
