Both FiringSquad and EvilAvatar are reporting that Mark Rein is pretty much confirming the next Make Something Unreal Contest via an article at Computer & Video Games. Unfortunately, the URL is not resolving or CVG has gone tits-up. Fortunately, EvilAvatar has a juicy quote:
Epic Games, creator of Gears of War and the massively-successful Unreal Engine 3, is planning a follow-up to its 2004 nVidia $1,000,000 Make Something Unreal Contest, according to company VP Mark Rein.
Speaking to CVG recently, Rein said: "People ask me 'will there be another nVidia $1,000,000 Make Something Unreal contest?' Sure, we'll round up some sponsors again and hopefully have another big, huge mod contest."
The Unreal honcho continued, saying that with Unreal Engine 3 as the platform, his expectations are even higher for the contest: "This time I think it's going to be spectacular," he said. "You see so many companies have licensed the technology, mainly because of how great the tools are and how productive and creative they can be with these tools, and it's going to be that much more-so for the mod guys."

Great. That'll mean that there will be lots of good-quality mods in development for us to play. ;)

Good to know that there will be a new contest. Ok, it's in the planning phase and nothing is final, but they do intend to pull it off.
It's a good thing to know about it this early, this way talented mod-teams can already start with things like planning, concept-art and content-creation, etc. So, when UT2k7 hits the shelves, some of them will already have a solid base to work on and we will see a lot of good mods emerging only a short time after release. Sounds like great news to me!

Well, Chaos UT Evolution scored 1st place in the last MSUC, and much of it already existed in some form for UT, like the proxies, the vortex, the crossbow and the bastard sword, to name just a few.

Dude BW wasn't even around when the first MSUC ended. Get your facts straight.
Also its pretty awesome, you should try it, and it'll be super amazing on UT2k7, cause its already amazing.

There will be so many mods to chose from and so many new ideas too. So if a new idea is up against an old mod hey I know which one would stand out for me. :)

Hambuger, the mod isn't that old, ChoasUT is old, plus RS has a ton more stuff to do for BW, have you even tried it?
Well for one thing you have to know WHAT your doing for your mod, also you don't need to do anything except create the stuff you want to make for your mod. pretty simple.

on gamestar.de (one of german's big video games magazines) they are currently discussing (http://www.gamestar.de/community/gspinboard/showthread.php?t=228014) whether valve or epic would provide the better support for mods.
anyone who understands it - read it. it's very entertaining. :)
Doc Shock

Well, I wouldn't call a one-page-long thread a big discussion.
And for those who don't understand german: ZDragon simply stated that Epic had a much deeper understanding for modders, and better judgement when it comes to seeing a mod's potential. Then I stated that, while I also think Epic's support is superior, that doesn't mean Valve gives a sh** about it's mod community, they are also very supportive, inviting mod teams to visit their hq and such things. The few posts that followed were more or less the same, some pro-Valve, some anti-Valve and then the "discussion" quickly faded out. Nothing exiting going on there.

As crazy as this may sound I think this is a bad thing.
The last MSUC introduced an artificailly large amount of mod teams, now for starters the unreal series doesn't have the player base to support the amount mods that UT2004 generated so ultimately most of the mods die through lack of player support.
Most of the teams disbanded after the MSUC and moved onto the HL2 engine, I forsee the same kind of thing happening again, it's nice to promote mods but spamming the community with 100's of sub par mods that never get finished is not really a good thing.
And most of the winning mods (top10) end up having serious commercial support, thats right a great deal of the top10 mods actually had full time paid workers pumping out professional level content to boost the games ratings which is totaly unfair to the traditional modders who are usualy gamers and amatures starting out.
Mods existed way before the MSUC and they don't need any more encouragement, there will always be mods but as long as greed powers the reason behind the mods, we'll have more bad quality mods rather than less decent mods.
Not a good thing IMO.
Does RO the mod that won the contest have that much $$$ support behind it when its a mod?

Personal I really don’t care if they do it or not. For me I hate playing games on a PC and love playing them on my consol. The mods in the past are either rushed, to short or the game play is not satisfying enough for my taste buds. I would much rather go and buy a game from town then download any mod or even maps.
I am also a believer that this kind of thing hurts the game more then it helps. For me UT2004 was drowned with endless maps mods and info. For me that’s what hurt/destroyed this game. I have got to the point now were I only download official map packs and so forth.

Well to that point it would be good if they would encourage mod makers to make something that actually enhances UT2007 and not change it into something else. I mean I’ve played some of the winning mods maybe once. What if they actually came up with innovative ideas to enhance UT2007 to make it better and improve ONS,CTF,DM. Now that would be worthwhile, I think. :)

Because you won't get innovative mods like RO if the modders are limited to it only being UT2007. Make Something Unreal is a brilliant testing ground for new games that wouldn't see the light of day in the current state of industry!
They could do a mod to enhance UT2007 but I don't see why they should be limited to just that. I'm sure the guys at Epic would be more impressed by an original concept rather than seeing someone re-work their own game.

The UCMP is also great, And theirs been Soma, Slainchild, Sjosz, Hourences, Desperado#2, Luv_Studd and SpoonDog were awesome mappers, but thats just to name a few who didn't have all their maps in the UCMP or CXP (even though theirs a few in their).

i dont see how getting more games for the price of one is bad to the game.
Mods modify the entire game, is ridicolous to think that if anybody makes the Red Orchestra mod (for example), this is going to ruin the original Unreal Tournament 2k4.
I just dont see the point.
You have more games, if you like them, you play them, if you dont, you still have the normal ut2k4

It’s the constant bombardment of maps and information that fly’s around the internet ever single day that bores me to death. In the past it just used to be in a magazine and hey not so long after its released in the shops. Those days were more fun games were less boring then they are today.

You could easily say the same aout hollywood films, or mass-market "hip" literature, Dylan vs bubblegum pop, whatever.
Your point seems to be that there's too much content out there for UT, right?
Well the simple sooution is to simply not download it - bam, done.
I mean, who are you to decide that traditional DM is *better* than a mod like TAM?
Who are you to say that ONS is intrinsically better than vctf? (ok, it came in the game but all the maps are home-made)
You're talking about your own personal taste, and just like everyone, your tastes change over time.
I thought I'd never see a better game in my life when I first played MicroMachines 2 on the megadrive, hell, you could get 4 players on it at once! (omg!)
The simple fact it, UT is not just a game, it's also framework for people to make thier own games as well, and has been ever since Unreal1 - if you didn't notice that, then it's no-one elses' fault really, ay? :)
Anywhoo, not to sound like a rant, because I don't mean it that way, but be fair now, your argument comes off more like someone who's played one too many duff custom maps & crappy deck remakes, and wants to tar the rest of the community with that same brush.

it seem that your problem is that you don like so many quantity,
maybe you should try to select less games, or talking about unreal, less maps
nobody forces you to play all the games or maps that are released,
You simply have more stuff, if you like it, you play it, if you dont, you still have the normal ut2k4 and everybody is happy

the first time i said anything i said that making mods dindt hurt the game, while
the second time i spoke, i said that you dont have to play every map that is released
the only thing that i repeated is the last line, because both post have different arguments to go to the same conclusion

Meh, no excuse. There's that one guy who is modding his own zombie game. Forgot the name but he does everything by himself. I read an article about how he had to learn all of the moding programs including how to code.
