View Full Version : Too Violent?

In UT99 a rocket to the face that killed the opponent not only killed him but actually made him explode... like body parts and blood and bouncing knee caps and such... It was so satisfying. In fact, when I really think about it, the only time you didn't see someone explode is when you killed them with enforcers, a head shot (although their heads did asplode) and maybe minigun fire. And even then, if you wanted to you could easily pump a few more shots into them and watch thier bodies turn into chum.

Why do I see a guy in the latest gameplay video dying from a rocket to the side of the head and just laying down? Why didn't his HAED ASPLODE!?

Is there a reason for this? It can't be that Epic is concerned with violent images in video games... After hearing the taunts in the recent 'shaky-cam' vid that I downloaded yesterday (nice F-bomb) I can't understand why some over the top limb mutilation is out of the question... unless it's a code/physics thing.

It may sound juvenile, but it really added a bit of fun to the game for me to be able to rape someone with a shock combo right over thier heads and watch them turn into mush... AND THEN being able to watch the mush travel a trajectory opposite the combo and bounce off the floor! HAHA- Great times!!

Anyone have any thoughts on this subject? Anyone wondering why this isn't at extreme as it once was? Anyone want it that way?

LOL!

I'm pretty sure I saw some chunks in one of the older vids, I'll have to go back and look again.

edit: Shock balls left chunks, RL left flaming chunks.

There is gibbing in this game, you can see it in the dm section of the vid where the guys using twin enforcers and then swtiches to the rocket launcher (the corpse that's already on the floor explodes), however, at the moment the gibs seem to be made of napalm and so are on fire.

I sure hope that's removed by release.

heh, I remember that. Didn't the initial target gib as well? I think he had a fully loaded rocket launcher for that one.

Hmm, so I guess I just wasn't paying enough attention. How embarassing... OK, well if you guys say there's chunks, than there's chunks and that's good enough for me. I'll go back and watch it again to see what I missed the first time.

Can anyone link me to this DM video I hear people talking about? I'd really like to see it.

I believe one method of determining whether a death causes gibbing or not may be 'how far past death' the player has been taken, i.e. if health could go negative, how much into the negative would the health go?

Going to what would be -5 would 'only just kill someone' so they die with no gibbing.
Going to what would be -50 would be way past that, and would warrant some gibs (lose limbs based on location and possibly damage type).
Going to what would be -150 would pretty much liquify most of the player.

Something along those lines, but perhaps with a little more depth is probably the easiet way of determining gib-factor

The gibs where way cooler in UT99. I think those days are gone. The gibs are more cartoony now and it looks like UT2007 are going to stay with that type of gib. Blood decal kind of suck now to.

Modulus just go to www.youtube.com and type in UT2007 into the search bar. You should get a bunch of vids, including that ONS gameplay one with the bot's f-bomb.

I think a better idea would be to check how much damage was dealt in the past 0.5 seconds (these checks should go on after he turns ragdoll). I think it's a bit silly that someone with 200 health wouldn't gib from 3 rockets dealing 240 damage, while a character with 40 health would gib from a single rocket doing 90 damage.

Yes, that's the kind of depth I'd like to see, but couldn't be bothered thinking about :D

Did you see the part in the vids where the Darkwalker got a direct hit on a guy running?

No, but that doesn't matter to me at all... I plan on playing TDM/DM almost 100% of the time, so vehicle generated gibs are of no use to me.

Yeah and that was the funny!

He thinks that people cant gib, but I showed a example of gibbing, whitch means their will probably be others, not just to that gametype.

Yeah that was awesome how the bot responded to the walker. "What the F#@& is that.... arrrrggggghhhh". Epic seems to have done a good job making their bots realistic, at least with their reactions to the environment.

Hm. Interesting question. I guess ragdoll physics are hard to compute for gore-mush. lol

I think the best recent game for gibs was Painkiller. They did a great job having both excessive gibs and realistic ragdolls.

Maybe they reduced the amount of gibs because of the return of feign death. If every player is gibbed when he is killed, it will be even more easy to determine if he is faking.

But I'd like to see those exaggerated deaths return. Maybe not only based on negative health, but on damage type as well:
The Stinger shouldn't be able to gib a player completely, that should only be possible with heavy explosives and high-energy vehicle weapons, but it could rip off a limb which gets pinned to the wall behind.
Rocket area damage should gib one or two limbs, a direct hit with a 3-rocket spiral should turn players into a cloud of blood spray and gibs.
I also noticed that the Link Gun doesn't skeletonize any more. I hope that death-type wasn't left out completely, it was really cool to be able to burn the flesh of your victim's bones. It was also very fitting for death zones like lava or electricity. I agree that the Link Gun death animation sucked, but the general idea was good. The Link gun is a plasma weapon, plasma is superheated gas, of course it should burn them. But that lame green hull should have been replaced with a dusty cloud made of ashes.

The more frag gibs the better.

Rl , Flak , bio alt, shombo ,nades and any other explosive weps should cause gibs

With the processing power this game looks like it's going to require we're going to need a range of client-side gibbing settings - from none to "mess the landscape" depending on the physics/processing power available!

Hadn't thought about looking there.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Found some I hadn't seen.

This game is gonna be so freakin amazing!

How is that by the way? Any fun?

I was watching an episode of 20/20 or some such news show when they did an interview on Fatal1ty... He was playing that game and because I haven't gotten my lunch hooks on any good FPS since UT99 I was intruiged and thought about trying it out.
