View Full Version : Why hoverboard tricks won't work

I presume we all know about the hoverboard addition to 2k7. However you might not know about the whole "Tony Hawk Trick Style" included with this board.

You'll be able to pull off hoverboard tricks, a la Tony Hawk, whenever you want, allowing players a certain amount of style as they move around the massive levels quickly while sacrificing the ability to defend themselves.

Although I realise that people will want something to do while they're moving towards their target area, I don't think that the "trick" idea is a good way to fix the supposed boredom.

Any ONS'er that can remember the ECE pack remembers the "ONS-Tricky" map. Apart from having no fog, there was a serious gameplay problem with this map;

The trick mutator.

Thats right, the trick mutator on ONS-Tricky spawned entire servers with no people playing, but just trying to do more and better "tricks" in matches bringing fun gameplay to a halt.

In short, the possibilty of making tricks in nice, could be fun actually. But the concept is kinda anti-gameplay in a FPS.

So yeah, thats my opinion on the subject, (and I'm sure some other people will agree with me one this)

You answered your own question/point in your own post. Do you know why those things weren't popular in UT2004? Yup, because they weren't there from the start and they were optional. That's why they failed.

Also you seem to be blowing the Tony Hawks reference out of proportion, you make it sound as if it's an integral part of how the game is going to work. It's really not, it's probably nothing more than a neat animation that plays when you hit a key so that you either get a little speed boost or don't fall flat on your face when you land after flying off the edge of a building.

True.

I remember playing ONS-Tricky online, we got everything we could up on the big tower - Paladin, Tanks, Manta, etc. :p

There's no incentive to doing tricks; it seems like it was planned as a sign of ownage for that pursuer who just couldn't hit you.

What's wrong with that?

Nothing.
I'm sure Cliffy B's Pro Hoverboard 2007, uh, I mean Unreal Tournament 2007 is going to be awesome.

Hoverboard tricks = taunts/horn for hoverboard. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same key as vehicle horn.

Nothing to worry about.

What's wrong with that? I agree, infact I posted something similar on the Titan forum earlier on:

There doesn't appear to be any reward for doing hoverboard tricks, so people will be less likely to spend a whole match just doing tricks. The reason why maps like ONS-Tricky do not play well is because of the daredevil award, people do tricks to get a higher daredevil award, it provides an incentive to do the tricks. Without this incentive I reckon that once the novelty wears off, very few people will perform tricks when they could be playing the game properly.

They'll do it because it looks cool. Taunts don't do anything and nor do gestures and yet people still do both. Why? Because they want that extra level of interaction with their victim/killer. It's one thing to shoot a guy in the face but it's a totally other thing to then be able to take the piss out of said guy.

Yes, but how many players spend the entire game doing nothing but taunts or gestures?

why take the piss out of the guy? Make the kill, go to the objective, done.

i dont like the tricks-idea aswell. seems they have to add one really stupid thing in each game of the franchise, tho if that's it i am fine. they could be doing worse things.

C'mon, it's a game, have some fun. It's not like it's gonna kill gameplay or anything else, it's gimmick. Is that so bad?

i hope that is all it is otherwise i am like A_Spec and think the hoverboard tricks are pretty bad as far as ideas go for an FPS.

I can see it now:

ONS-Hoverboard_Race2k7

ONS will see our gametype die with hoverboard race maps as AS died with AS race maps in 2k4 :p

I can see an introduction for UT 2007 single player now...

(Some character sees Malcolm in a skating park)

SC: Yo, I bet you ain't got the skillz like I have
(SC does some random trick)
SC: Beat that!

(Malcolm goes up a ramp, does a better trick, and when he lands the announcer says "Wicked Sick!")

Malcolm: How do you like that, *****?
Malcolm: Ha ha, owned.

(UT 2007 title comes up and enlarges, much like in UT 2003/4)

Zero, which is coincidentally the same number of people who will spend the entire game doing hoverboard tricks.

I look at it as just icing on the cake. Is it an integral part of the game? No. Just a little extra something that people can have a little fun with. Some people appreciate stuff like that. Like me.:)

well, i think its just not good for the atmosphere.
its not a believable picture for me that malcom would do skating tricks in the middle of a "war", just to have some fun.

atmosphere is a very important factor in games for me and i dont think gimmicks like that are worth taking away from it.

Well, if you don't like the tricks, don't use them then.
Problem solved.

GuntiNDDS

not really. the thing about ut is that you play it with multiple people :)
put really simple:

- i see a darkwalker approaching
== good for the atmosphere

- i see my teammate doing skating tricks
== bad for the atmosphere

Why?
I think it's cool.
Doing some back flip before i headshot some fool.
After that some nice taunt like "Eat that"

Perfect kill i say.

well, we got different viewing angles here. for me skating tricks do not
fit with the unreal atmosphere and seem to be some ironic
semi-funny gimmick.

just like a bad scene in a great movie can destroy the whole
experience.

If people love doing skating tricks, they should just play a Tony hawk's™ game.

Although we know what complaing about Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmister Crow! did with Epic, so they'll probably keep tricks in (and probably make that SP sequence too...).

Now i understand, you one of those guys that wants everything exactly the same like 10 years ago.
Well, go play pacman then, that's still the same.
I however want new stuff in a new game. Not the same stuff with better graphics.
You prolly disagree but that's ok. ;)

well, you really didnt get my point there.
atmosphere has nothing doto with "things keeping the same".

they are adding alot of new stuff to ut2007, that i really like.

its all about wether or not it fits together with the overall
audio-visual experience.

btw, i am not arguing against you, if you like the skating - i am fine with that.

Any one why thinks there won't be a slew of crappy hoverboard race maps is surely delusional...And I have no doubt there'll be 30+ maps of just a giant box and a redeemer in the middle.

Just let it go, I was worried before about how many mods would be made due to the increase in detail being difficult for small-timers to keep up with. I got over it; you all will get over it too.

Besides, Strangelove'99 was fun as hell... what's wrong with the occasional race map?

Piglet
08-25-2006, 07:49 PM
I've seen plenty of players spend entire maps doing nothing but see how big an award they can get for driving off a cliff. I'm all for a bit of style - but if it's Tony Hawkings physics demonstration...hmmm...maybe actually he's unlikely to be the one doing it....

Lets wait and see. If there are problem players in the demo enough to worry about I'm pretty sure Epic will tone it down for the Gold version. If not we can always knock up a "spend more than x time on a board or do more than y trick jumps and get kicked" mutator!

I kind of see your point. But I think they implemented in a way that it doesn’t get ridicules. For the most part it just a quick way to get around an ONS map. And perhaps the tricks is more like a taunt if someone takes a shot at you and misses you can taunt him with a trick. :D

I think it'll open up some really cool possibilities for mappers - I mean, imagine an assault map for 2K4, team A has to reach some Arctic base/station/thing, and the first objective is to reach the base.

Only problem is, they have to cross-country snowboard there, breaking and scattering in all directions while the defenders hunt them in snowmobiles (scorpions & Benders with modded wheels, weapons & traction properties), bonus! :D

That's just some stoopid idea I came up with in like 10 seconds, imagine what some clever pro could come up with given a tool like the hoverboards, and some actual thinking-time put into it?

I'm sure it'll be possible to enable/disable any element of the game you want, just as you can now (no-one forces you to use x-locs, certain vehicles, weapons etc.. or even include them in the map) so if it's gonna hurt a certain map- don't include it, and if it's going to be useful, by all means put it in.

And hell, if it reduces the amount of bloody teleporters we see nowadys, I don't care if we all end up riding pink chocobos, let alone back to the future style hoverboards.

As long as it's not like the shieldgun (ie; always there no matter the gametype or what the mapper intended) then it'll all be ok imo, don't worry so much, it'll make you go grey, y'know, like Malcolm. ;)
