I still play UT99 assault competitively.
I like how the maps are non-linear.
There is still a league for this ( www.utassault.net ) ---> http://www.utassault.net/leagues/index.php?leagueid=1 for std and http://www.utassault.net/leagues/index.php?leagueid=2 for "pro" (friendly fire on).
I think one of the main reasons assault didn't do so well in 2k4 was because everything had to follow a certain order.
They still build custom maps where you can launch ppl and sneak around for UT99 assault and jump to different objectives.
Mappers have found another way to express themselves in 2k4 because there is no more launching or jumping to objectives and those are the race maps and the big custom maps. I play on the custom map servers but I still go back to UT99 assault because of the way you can think of ways to get around the map and sacrifices you have to make to get to the other objectives in the map.
For instance, when you hammer launch someone you have to stand still to launch them ( usually ;) ), the opposing team has to know where they may launch and look out for it. Same with rocket launching, you have take two people away from attacking and launch them and the other team has to be ready for it, it makes it very fun competitively.
I also play 2k4 assault competitively and there the main thing is to jump on them at the choke points. I have been on the top assault team for 2k4 and have played many matches vs many different teams. I think the only thing that has changed assault have been the vehicles and turrets. Healing them and trying not to get sniped is the main thing with turrets. With vehicles you have to follow a certain route while keeping it alive.
There are still servers that run UT99 assault and they refuse to play 2k4 assault because it is so linear ( I've asked them believe me LOL )
So I'm asking you to not make it follow too much of a line, but look back on some classics like; AS-Rook, AS-Frigate, AS-Mazon.
Where you don't have to do the objectives in order, and you can wait at the final, keeping the opposing team on their toes.
I don't know If you still have developers that worked on UT99 there or know any of the tricks to those maps so I'll say a few.
In rook you can do a double hammer launch from the front doors and they are able to get launched to end of the map (final objective), the defending team has to stop that by keeping a strong defense on the double doors of the castle while being able to protect the chains in the library. In Frigate there are so many ways to kill the compressor, the defending team has to prevent them from using the ripper while at the same time defending inside of the side. The attacking team can also launch to the top of the ship and wait for the compressor to be killed so they can enter through the top of the ship. The defending team has to launch ppl up to the top of the ship so the attacking team doesn't launch ppl up there and have them wait there to go inside from the top. In Mazon you can kill the crystal before the chains and ppl can get launched and come down from the roof using the elevator and get the switch.
I hope this will bring some light as to why ppl still play UT99 assault and 2k4 assault is slowly dying..
On the bright side - www.drylobster.com is holding 2k4 assault's 3rd mixer this year. If you want to play just post on the forums and you can see how 2k4 assault is played "professionally".

Probably not, I don't like the TIW and I usually play 2k4 at night.
