I already volunteered to be a moderator at the very least. What is up with this new attitude of Epic's? :?

They are under a lot of stress. They are perfecting UC2:TLC (which would be MY first priortiy) and they are releasing a major engine that is going to be the best ever next generation engine. A lot of popular companies will be using it.

When people are professionals and getting paid good money and we are spending our money that argument doesn't hold much weight. Plus I did say I volunteered to help out and I am sure other people with real professional work experience have volunteered as well. Why not take some of us up on our offer? :)

That is true, they have our money. We want stuff for our money.

That means... ..just a higher number of coices...???
No, CUSTOM Avatars...

...no I start to understand the following quotes (not mine, btw) from INA after these board went down:

"Hope they stay down forever"

With out a Glob-Avatar it seems I have to look for another community. :(

Custom avatars at least let people work out who's posting without having to read the username text. Gives a better sense of personal identity.

A lot of boards don't allow custom avatars. It opens up a lot of can of worms in the abuse department.

The_Deacon

While this is true, they most often have many more avatar choices. Now I'm sure this will happen in time, although it's hardly a major priority I would assume.

Perhaps there could be a way for us to submit avatar proposals (I don't mean for personal use, I mean ones that anyone can use) to you guys (Epic). Certainly have the standard strict limits on file size and image dimensions. Then the good ones could be used, with little effort on your (Epic's) part I might add, and you get some community involvement which is never a bad PR thing :P

Theres plenty of artistic people out there that I'm sure would love to help out, and any abuse would never be seen by the public since all submissions would be vetted by you (Epic) before they get anywhere near the avatar list.

Just another one of my thoughts :D

plus, custom avatars makes the board to be a completly chaos, and becomes not a better forum, but a picture museum.

fuegerstef

It makes a forum easier to use. And so a BETTER forum. Simple as that.

Most people recognize others simply by looking at the avvy. This is important with a huuuge community where a lot is to be read and you don't want to waste your time to look if the post is by Dual1ty, Du4lity or Duali7y.
(Experienced the INA boards after the UT2004 Demo release??? It saved me abaout an hour of time then, I believe)

That custom avvys make a forum more chaotic or it can be abused is NOT a valid argument. Now, look: make a forum without letters, please. People could abuse the letters...

The_Deacon

and in addition to that, someone could just as easily (in fact more easily) 'abuse' the use of image tags on the forums.

It isn't a big deal for me right now, but the more members that join, the more chaotic the forum gets regarding working out who posted what.

How about this for a different solution: Let people customise their display name with colours, bold, italics, and underline. I can think of several neat ways to implement variations on this type of thing, whether it be on a per name or per character basis.

Something like this would provide the personal identification offered by an avatar (to some extent) yet removes the danger of 'avatar abuse'

Now at the moment only moderators/special people have the custom user name effects (thus proving it's very possible) but they could still retain their special visibility via custom admin avatars and text effects that aren't available to normal users.

Once again, just another idea thrown into the pot.

How bout forcing GIFs that can't be bigger than 50*50 and no more then 10Kb? That wouldn't hurt much would it?

Excellent idea, it'S done at INA too... ...every modern forum software out there supports that feature. ;)

Ahh yes ... I did forget about E3. Okay Epic men I can let you off for that. ;)

Edit: I was wondering what happened to this thread ... and yes forums are free in theory but c'mon man you know as well as I do a good company like you has to add that forum in ... I would think the $50 bucks we each spend takes care of this ... but okay ... anyway I'll be looking forward to this place allowing us to have some individuality ... I hate having the same avatar as tons of other folks ... my avatar (the one I use on other sites) is classy, cool and elegant ... and it really shows who I am and what I am about. You'll see ... just give us that ability as soon as you can please. :)
