As some of you requested, I should do one on the Shock Rifle. There is a topic called "Shock Rifle" and I posted a mini guide in it,but I felt as though I never really went into good detail about it. So, heres the guide for the Shock Rifle.

~~The Shock Rifle~~

The shock rifle has been in every UT since UT 99. Its always been a very hard weapon to master, and its even harder in UC2. Its going to take more than simple target practice.

Lets disscuss what the Shock Rifle can and cannot do. The Shock Rifle is a mid-long range weapon, so if your up close to someone, I advise you switch to your melee or another gun!

The shock rifle has 4 different "modes" listed below:
1. Primary fire(right trigger)-Shoots a shock laser.

2.Alternate fire(left trigger)-Shoots a shock core.

3. Frozen Core(press and hold the left trigger, then press the right trigger to feeze the core)-Core frozen in mid air.

4.Built Core(After freezing a core in mid air, fire more cores(left trigger) into it to make it bigger, then fire a laser at it. HUGE explosion)-Big boom.

Using the Shock Rifle correctly
As I mentioned before, the Shock Rifle is very hard to master and takes time. Here is where I will provide you with some tips for all of its "modes"

Primary fire: This shoots a long range laser. This itself is a mini sniper blast, and can reach far distances. Use this for any enemies who are very far away. Try not to take pot shots,if you miss a pot shot...your draining your ammo!

Alternate fire: This shoots a Shock Core or, a shock ball. This is the shock rifles protable mine, and you can denoate it whenever you want by firing the laser(right trigger) at it. However, I do NOT reccomed shooting someone directly with the shock core, it does little damage and can be dodged VERY easily.

Frozen Core: Ahh yes, your personal mid air mine! This wil lallow you to freeze the core in mid air so you can set traps and shoot it whenever you want. However, be aware that they dissipear over time!

Buiilt core: The most useful thing about the Shock Rifle is this feature. If you build up a large core and fire it, the explosion is very large. This is VERY useful for small maps as you can rack up frags easily,or defend the flag easily. Of course, this doesnt last forever,it too will dissipear over time.

Tips are nice, now how to I master it fully?
Well, mastering it fully is extremely difficult! It takes more than simple practice to master this baby. Most of you dislike the shock rifle due to its low power. Well, thats because you haven't mastered it yet and you do not know how to fully use it.

Aiming can be extremely difficult due to the fast paced action of UC2. By aiming, I mean hitting your core. I read that many of you either have trouble hitting the core, or have trouble telling where it is.

If you having trouble hitting your core, turn your senseativy down so you aim slower. Yes,slower. Now try to practice hitting it with a very slow crosshair. If you can hit it pretty well, turn it back up. Remember than after fireing a core,if you DON'T move your crosshair, you will be able to hit it. If you do move your crosshair, then your going to have to practice and learn to hit it.

Hitting the core is all about keeping your eyes on it. If you've got 2 enemies charging at you and you fire a core....if you look at them, you'll never hit your core. Focus only on the core itself. When you achive this, your pretty damn good at it. I myself can fire a core, take down an enemie, then fire the core and damage another. Its not impossable to do that(I do it all the time) it jsut takes patience and timing.

SInce the shock rifle is different from all the other UT(the laser is faster, but the core is smaller) it will require even better reflexs. If your sitll having trouble aiming, take a small rubber band and wrap it around both analog sticks. This is FORCE you to use force to aim,and once you get good at having a force agaisnt you, remove the rubber bands. Now you should be able to hit the core just fine. Remeber, if you fire 3 cores and their near each other, just by hitting one of them, they will all go boom!

Now, for those of you having trouble seeing where it is...I suggest you study each of the maps carefully. Counting always helps. ALWAYS. After you fire, count to 3 and shoot the core. If it misses, try counting to 4,and so on and so forth. I also find that fireing then moving to the side helps see where the core currenly is.

Now,hitting the core while moving. This is extremely hard to do,but its worth it in the end. Hitting the core is simply like hitting a moving target. If you can do that, you should have no problem hitting the core itself..as long as you Keep your eyes on the core itself!

I'm currently working on some more moves for the shock rifle and they (along with sniper rifle ones in my guide for the snipe rifle) will be posted soon. Until then, keep trying!

Regarding aiming...

Like WorldofUnreal018 said, beginners should use their strafe and jumps to do most of the aiming, that isn't too hard to pick up with a little practice. But without fluid movement you're still a sitting duck...

The tougher part is getting a feel for jerking your crosshair into a combo to allow you to maintain your mobility and avoid that flak and rocket spam. Practicing things like circle strafing, and backwards runs help.

But imo the biggest part of mastering your combos is knowing the maps. It's one thing to nail your combo consistently on flat terrain; it's quite another comboing from a free fall, trailing up a ramp or stairs, doing it off a lift and elevator, or comboing vertically. So practice the maps.

I find its VERY difficult to use the Built Core effectively, maybe if it lasted a bit longer. The basic core+shot=boom combo is much more practical.

Agreed on both replies. Knowing the level is especially important for a shock rifle user because the more complex the level gets, the more the shock rifle is advantaged. For instance, the shock rifle owns the mega-health area of Axon compressor. Whether you're on different levels of that area or you're on the same level, the various obstacles and wide shock blast area make it easy to hit them while being out of sight. It's one of the few situations where I'd ALMOST rather have a shock than a snipe :)

As for the built core, I think epic should have made the countdown timer restart when you add another secondary to the existing one. Or at least tack on another 5 seconds or something, so that you can have the option of keeping it alive.

One thing that I want to add, is that you shouldn't lock on to an opponent while using the Shock Rifle.

I know it’s mentioned elsewhere, but since this is strategy thread I thought it’d be good to recap it here…

Using Frozen cores:
Freezing shock cores can make leading your target into your combos much easier by essentially robbing your opponent of the option to zigzag and thus cutting off their terrain and avenue for escape.

Also freezing cores in claustrophobic areas make for good cheap cover. A lot of people get scared of frozen shock cores even though cores by themselves don't do much damage. So you can use this to your advantage to cover your back and effectively delay a scavenger a couple precious seconds while you’re occupied with another opponent.

Finally, frozen cores make good counters against wall dodgers. Lead them into a wall with your core, freeze it and the chain reaction between that core and your next core will almost always kill your opponent, unless they squeezed by you with a lucky pounce or sniped your head off.

Very good tips everyone, thanks alot.

I thought I'd add this:

if you fire 2 secondary shots as fast as possible, shooting only one of them with your primary will detonate the other. Timing is tricky, but if you can master it, it's damn useful and can really up the amount of damage you do.

With Warrior Spirit on and my turbo controller I can shoot a whole line of cores and blow them all up.

Now THAT I hadn't thought of. I might go buy one just for that reason ;D

"Very good tips everyone, thanks alot. "
Obviously it has worked out pretty well for you.
I can attest to that.

I'm better than I used to be with the SR, but still suck.

And to whoever mentioned not locking on when using the SR.

I had to learn that the hard way.
