EPIC, i was wondering what you make your models in. And if you/ or not going to use the same program for the next Unreal engine.

they probably use 3ds max, i think its the industry standard

Yea, but what about maya?
legacy-Olav
04-12-2005, 10:02 PM
I think they use about everything thats available for their hands.

some modelers in EPIC uses 3d studio, but most of them use Maya.

I believe that most(I doubt all) of our really high poly models are now made with a combo of 3D MAX and Z-Brush. Though some of use Maya and Lightwave and Modo and Softimage etc etc...

ok thanks for answering.

hmm ive never heard of z-brush, ill have to check this out. ive only just started 3d max. it nice to see that the tools i use currently are used in real application.

i use version 5 of 3d studio, and i have to get the last one, i heard there are couple of new things :)

I believe Z-brush is used to paint a normal map for the high detail models. I've heard it's almost impossible to model + 1,000,000 poly models by using a 3D app. only.

You can model multi-million poly models by hand. It just takes a lot of time.
Z-brush is somewhat similar to terrain painting in UED, just more advanced. It allows you to do a lot of the bumpy/veiny details with ease.

So basicly you guys use whatever they feel most comfortable with?
legacy-Rubberhead
04-15-2005, 08:23 AM
Yes, why wouldn't they?
It allso a crapload more efficient.
Just look at the flying monster in one of the techdemos, no way you're gonna model all those veins and wrinkels.
legacy-DoMiNaToR
04-15-2005, 08:28 AM
the veins on the wings are very high detailed textures, not shapes.
legacy-Retodon8
04-15-2005, 08:39 AM
True, although those textures are created from actual high resolution models, so you will need to model them sometime.
It would be very hard to paint details by hand and making them look good, or at least natural, as normal maps.
Here's a link to the people that made Zbrush:
http://pixologic.com/
I'm going to check it out later myself. :)
Epic (don't remember who exactly) commented earlier and mentioned doing the smallest of details by hand would work, but not the bigger ones.
This would be because the normal maps don't just add things like veins on a flat surface, but also turn a flat surface into a convex shape for instance.
(Not really, but it'd look like it.)
Just adding the veins would result in a model that'd still look blocky, only with nice veins.
Anyway, I agree with Rubberhead; using the programme you prefer is the most efficient way to model I'm sure.
As long as the end product is compatible with all those programmes, it's a good choice.
I think other companies pretty much require you to work with software package A or B, which would be less nice.
Man, I really should get my hands on some modelling software and create myself some UT2004 static meshes, and a custom player model to use on my friend's server. :)

''Anyway, I agree with Rubberhead; using the programme you prefer is the most efficient way to model I'm sure''
heh, if you are professionalizede with one programm you cant start learning about other to get pro, thats too much, thats why companies of gaming let their modelers to use the program they prefer or a professionalized on it.

WOW. That zbrush program is simply amazing. Simply great images, but still i'd rather stick to 3d Max. But im re-trying to learn Blender. Toughest interface.
legacy-DoMiNaToR
04-15-2005, 08:54 AM
3d studio is much more powerfull than Blender, since blender is for starters its good to learn how to use it too.
legacy-iReProphecy
04-15-2005, 08:57 AM
lmao...Have you ever seen a picture of blender. Blender by far surpasses 3d Max. Blender dosnt even compare to 3d Max in difficulty. Look at the main interface and you'll just leave.
legacy-DoMiNaToR
04-15-2005, 10:01 AM
3d max can do more than that.
legacy-iReProphecy
04-15-2005, 11:26 AM
Have you ever seen or actually used Blender?
[image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/iRe/72ebbd5bea.jpg] Looks like its just for beginners.
legacy-DoMiNaToR
04-15-2005, 12:53 PM
eh i use blender, but i dont know much about it, and no, i was wrong, not for beginners, but its much easier to use than 3d studio.

=0 3d Max is the most easiest program to use. It is simple, and complex to use. But blender is the hardest program to use.
legacy-DoMiNaToR
04-15-2005, 01:04 PM
well, i dont think so, 3d studio is very complex. well, dont know much about blender, i prefer
to use 3d studio though.

Overall 3d Studio is great to have. But until i get my own computer a Blender is the choice. And with all the features blender has 5MB is amazing compared to 500MB=3d Max.
legacy-Grimlock

We use Maya at Uni.
legacy-Ictus
04-24-2005, 12:59 AM
3dsmax is very complex. part of learning it is learning to ignore 95% of the features and focus on the ones that matter for you personally :) it really is a fully functional content creation studio, not strictly a modelling program.
of course every few weeks I learn some insanly useful and simple modelling trick from somebody else at Epic, usually involving a button that's been in front of my face forever.
but the core tools that get commonly used in modelling are very simple to learn once you get the right idea.
kind of like in photoshop: once you grasp the concept of layers it's all downhill from there.

Ictus do you know if there are any positions opening up at Epic for animators in the near future?

If you click on teh Epic Games link at the top of the screen. They have posted a job opening before. And if your really interested you should email EPIC>

prophecy, 3d studio is better than blender, it only has 5 mb, with 5 mb you dont go anywhere.
3d studio is profesional and you must learn it like you learn how to talk, very important, you cant miss anything if you wanna be modeler.
legacy-iReProphecy
04-27-2005, 05:32 AM
Dominator have you even used a Blender. Seriously. I can model with 3d studio easily. Never said is wasnt a more professional program im just saying its easier to use than blender, or other prog.

Well I used the Maya PLE version, until I got 3DMax Lite, and I found Max much easier to control, and the ActorX tool for Max is great.

05-02-2005, 08:34 AM
I guess I'm a bit of an outcast because Maya was easier for me to learn than Max :)
But I do most of my modeling in a program called Wings3D.
legacy-iReProphecy
05-02-2005, 08:52 AM
I used that program back a while ago. I liked it, but i got 3d max shortly after that.
legacy-RUSirius
05-02-2005, 09:21 AM
You ought to give it try (just to play with) now. They have made some massive improvements to it recently.
I think the main reason I like Wings is because it's so small. It loads lighning fast.
legacy-DoMiNaToR

anyways, i make a union of AutoCAD (for drawing) and max for get better results :)
