I have got LOADS of questions about making your own weapon here...
I'm kinda new to this ^^
so:
How Large is it supposed to be in 3ds max?
What is the distance between the hands of the player?
is there any template model of an existing weapon that i can use when modeling my rifle?
How do i import my weapon into the game?
What filetype shall i save it as?
Do i need any plugin?
Is there any tutorial for weapon creating?

Here is a great gun ref site.

As far as the scale of the model is concerned you may want to import a 2004 character model into 3ds max. Using the character model you can adjust the scale of you gun accordingly. Also, depending on what gun you pick do an image search and try to find pictures of people hold that gun, just to give you a little more of a scale ref.
As far as how you hold a rifle, i would practice by holding a broom stick as a rifle just to get the general feel.
