View Full Version : Filtering out Demo servers?

Is there any way at all to filter demo servers from the server list, with the filter options that are availible in the retail version of the game with the latest patch?
If there is no way to do this with the filtering options that are availible, is there anything you could put in any of the INI files that will make the server browser list not show demo servers?
If there is, can anyone kindly explain how this is done?

Wouldn't that be nice, these days when most of the only populated servers are demo servers running DM-Rankin.

While some consider it a reflection of their 1337ness to play the same map over & over (!!!coz iz teh besht u n00b!!!), I find it boring as hell. Like watching my nails dry.

It may be that we have to use third-party software to find our servers, because of the limited filtering capability built into the game.

It is nice to play something OTHER than Rankin, but that's not what's really bothering me.. It's everytime I go to join one of the demo servers, I always run into someone with a damn bot.
I rarely ever run into this problem on retail servers. Demo servers have no cheat protections, so anyone is free to run around and be an ******* on the demo servers.

Would it also be nice to have a "DEMO ONLY" servers so you can reject anyone connecting to a demo server using a retail client?

I think it's possible because Demo Servers are version 3334, and retails are 3369. So if anyone trys to connect to a server using version besides 3334, it will get rejected.

Because when I use a demo client, I see everyone as Jakob meaning that almost everyone is using a retail client to connect to the demo server and all the newbies gets good frags pulled on them by skilled players.

I also have no problems with skilled players using a demo client to connect to demo servers. As long as I don't see a bunch of Jakobs.

But anyways, I am for using a stranderd deathmatch server using custom deathmatch maps as long as it does not have super shock rifles, giant maps, or the ones that does not have zoning to it, which indeed those are very rare.

There is no cheat protection that can stop someone from using a bot. It only takes them a few days to crack whatever protection anyone comes up with.

Retail servers tend ot have better admining then demo servers, this tends to reduce the cheating more then any of the cheat proteciton offered by retail versions.

This is like the Holy Grail of UT2k4 filter settings, I think. I'd like to say that someone'll find it eventually, but I really just don't think it exists anymore.

It's a Catch-22. You've got Retail owners in Demo Servers because that's where there are players to play with (there are /easily/ 10x the number of servers, for ANY gametype, that have 0 players or are full of bots than there are servers with /ACTUAL/ players). However, if Retail people could filter out demo servers, they'd find retail servers to play on with each other. Then the demo people would be the ones in /our/ position, and would hopefully buy the retail.

Even if I could make a 'Map DOES NOT EQUAL ONS-Torlan or ONS-Primeval or DM-Rankin or AS-Caravan etc., etc., etc.,' filter, I'd be happy.

Better yet, since I notice the problem mose in ONS, don't give an ONS (or Unreal Warfare) map in the next demo. Just give a /video/ of it. Show them what they're missing. Then everyone will buy the retail, Epic gets lots of money, the players don't get screwed... all is well. :)

I'd love to see a nodemo filter for UT2k4, but UT2k7 needs to avoid the whole problem entirely by having two different master servers between the demo and retail servers. The two should not be compatible. We've seen the problem for 3 years and it's only gotten worse for the UT2k series. Among other things like having bots enabled by default for online play, filling up the online community with bots.

I always end up on demo servers because I want to play stock maps. I don't want to play DM-Xyz-bedroom or some other custom map I've never heard of. Even if I find a good retail server with a good ping and standard maps, its empty. I try hanging around and noone shows up.

Somebody needs to teach the admins how to setup a descent server. There should be at least two bots on a server. This means if a person joins they have something to do while waiting for more people. It gets boring if there are no bots and no people but it's also boring if you join a server with two or three real people on it and five or six bots are playing too.

ROFL Frogger... I don't have a machine to run it on. But hey, there is a big need for descent servers out here in south east Tx.

I can understand having a couple bots in there so that when you log in, one of them leaves and you at least have something to fight against. But too often it's not even a skilled bot so it's basically like having nothing to fight against. :p
